It was the usual start to the season for all the teams in the Monday Spring League and the table has a familiar look about it.
Winter League Monday champions Northern Ironmongery are going through their normal slow start. They succumbed to the might of Fairhurst Fore who once again went into a three-figure total in their first game. BM Trucks had their usual tally of shots but it wasn’t quite enough to squeeze past the Loch Ness Juniors who are still smarting after failing to reach the winter play-offs.
With the Underdogs receiving the bye, it was Trilight and the Specialists who provided the game of the night, and possible the game of the season.
Both teams scored well and coped admirably with the tricky ground conditions but it was the GolfCross net and the 10 shots it supplied that proved decisive.
Tied after the first target the Specialists took what they thought would be a decisive nine-shot lead after the third target but Trilight finished with a flourish. While the Specialists failed to hit the net, Trilight managed one ball and the 10 shots gave them victory by the slimmest of one-shot margins.
Fairhurst top the table after their score of 104. Northern Ironmongery find themselves in the unusual position of propping up the rest of the teams.
MONDAY RESULTS
Northern Ironmongery 51, Fairhurst Fore 104.
BM Trucks 53, Loch Ness Juniors 58.
Luckless Leadbetter’s 70, Trilight 71.
The Underdogs (bye) 46.
BIG NOISE FROM THE FAIRWAYS
The Tuesday night teams didn’t quite hit the scores of the Monday mob but all the games were very close and a few hard luck stories were heard in the bar afterwards.
The biggest noise came from the Fairways team. Home advantage didn’t play into their hands. Although they had the second highest score of the night they were playing the team who had the highest score and the narrow margin of just five shots (one ball) was even harder to take.
The mumblings of “marathon” and “sprint” emanated from the Fairways corner well into the night.
Needless to say, it was new boys The Grumps who did for Fairways and they assume the lead position in the table. Just behind them are the Old Swingers who held onto to their end of season form from the winter league to sink the Coastguards.
The final game saw Raigmore Motel also have a five-shot win over the Luckless Leadbetters who have moved from Monday nights to try their luck on a Tuesday. They will be hoping that there fortunes improve over the coming weeks or they will be asking for a transfer back to the Monday slot!
TUESDAY RESULTS
Raigmore Motel 32, Luckless Leadbetters 27.
Coastguards 20, Old Swingers 34.
Fairways 46, Grumps 51.
