LAW BEATS CRERAR IN PLAY-OFF
TO WIN CALLAWAY CHALLENGE
Uphall’s Gordon Law, the 42-year-old former PGA Cup player, without a win since the 2005 season, survived a play-off to take the £1,080 top prize in the 36-hole Callaway Challenge at Lanark Golf Club today.
With Kenneth Hutton (Downfield), the overnight leader by four shots, dropping four shots in his first four holes on his way to a 77, it was Law and another one-time top Tartan Tour performer Andrew Crerar (King James VI), who grabbed most of the limelight.
Crerar posted the clubhouse target of four-under-par 136 with a four-under 66 in which he birdied the first, seventh, ninth, 10th and 16th and had only one bogey, at the fourth, in halves of 34 and 32.
Law, pictured right, in the second last group to finish, had outright victory within the regulation distance within his grasp after birdieing the first and the 13th to add to his four-under 66 in the first round. But Gordon bogeyed the 15th and 16th for a 70 to finish in a tie on 136.
On to the sudden-death play-off, and after the first two holes had been halved in par, Law triumphed at the third extra hole with a par to Crerar’s bogey.
Five players tied for third place, two shots behind on 138.
