DRAGON TOUR CALLING SCOTS TOUR PROS
FRIDAY 5pm deadline for entries to next week's
tournament at Pyle & Kenfig, South Wales
Entries close at 5pm on Friday so there is still time for plenty of Scots tour pros - and amateurs - to enter the first event on the 2007 Dragon Tour, the South Wales Open at Pyle & Kenfig Golf Club, South Wales on Monday and Tuesday, June 4 and 5.
Former European Tour and current Challenge Tour player Stuart Manley, who won the last event of the 2006 season at Machynys, would seem to be a favourite. He will face stiff opposition from home-club favourite and last season’s Dragon Tour Order of Merit winner, Alex Smith, who is fresh from three top 10 finishes on the PGA EuroPro Tour.
English raider Ian Brown (Newent, Gloucs), who won the event at Aberdovey, again makes the trip over the River Severn, and is joined by other English hopefuls James Shield (The Oxfordshire), Spencer Vickery (The Kendleshire), Jon Sully (Rothley Park) and Ricki Winn, formerly of Essex, but now playing out of Machynys Peninsula.
Amateur Kevin Goude also makes the trip from Cambridgeshire.
The longest-distance traveller is Chris Gray, flying over from the La Manga Club in Spain.
“It’s going to be a very exciting season, with some great courses and fantastic players,” said Tour director Rhydian Thomas. “At the first event, our official magazine partner, Golf Punk, will be visiting to interview tour officials and golfers for a special 'Inside the Ropes' article, and they will be joined by a film crew from Setanta Golf, the new satellite channel, which will be filming parts of the event and also interviewing participants.”
The Dragon Tour, which also encompasses visits to Ireland and Scotland on its journey, for four events under the new Celtic Pro Tour, has 11 events in Wales from June to October.
Annual membership of the tour costs £175 for professionals, while the event entry fee on top of that is £99.
Amateur golfers with a scratch handicap or better can also enter events at a cost of £55, and don’t need to pay membership.
Prize money at each event will be at least £1,000 - £2,000 if the field rises as high as 96 pros - to the winner, with the top 25% in the field winning money also. A voucher will be available to the leading amateur.
Golfers wishing to enter the South Wales Open are asked to contact Rhydian Thomas on 07861 686568 or register online at the website at www.celticpro.com by 5pm Friday, June 1.
The Pyle & Kenfig event is quickly followed by the West Wales Open at the Gower Golf Club on June 11 and 12.
