JAY HAAS BEATS TOM KITE IN US
SENIORS' TOUR PLAY-OFF
England's Mark James, the first-round leader, tied for third position behind the play-off participants, defending champion Jay Haas and Tom Kite, in the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf tournament at Savannah, Georgia.
Haas finished like a proverbial train, making up four shots of a leeway over the last eight holes and then beating Kite at the first hole of a play-off for his second Champions' Tour win of the season and his eighth in all on the over-50s circuit, one fewer than his total on the US PGA Tour.
Haas had a two-under-par 70 in the third round for a 54-hole aggregate of 207.
Mark James, who three-putted the last two holes in closing with a 70, Wayne Levi, Brad Bryant and Gil Morgan all shared third place on 208.
So what's the secret of Jay Haas' Indian Summer to his career? In one word, he says: "Putting."
"I'm a whole lot better a putter than I used to be. If only I'd changed my putting style to this when I was younger I could have won a lot more times," he said.
