NORTH-EAST DISTRICT MATCH-PLAY

FORMER PRO GLEN WINS JAFFREY CUP

Reinstated amateur Glen Taylor, now a member at Meldrum House Golf Club, returned to the course where he used to be club professional - Newmachar - to win the North-east District men's match-play championship for the Jaffrey Cup.
In the 18-hole final over the Hawkshill course, Taylor beat Laurie Phillips (Cruden Bay) by two holes in a quality final.
There was little to choose between the finalists over the first nine holes, both players taking a one-hole lead at different stages with Taylor the man who was one up at the turn. Phillips had birdied the fourth and fifth, Taylor the seventh and the eighth was halved in birdies.
It was a different story on the second nine. Taylor won the 12th with a par and the 123th with a birdie to surge three up.
Phillips came back at his man with birdies at the 16th and 17th to cut his deficit to one hole.
Then Taylor staged a grandstand finish to clinch the title. He holed a 24ft putt for a birdie 3 at the last to win by two holes.
Final - G Taylor (Meldrum House) bt L Phillips (Cruden Bay) 2 holes.
