MacIntyre finishes well for a share

of second place in British Masters

Marcus Kinhult held off challenges from defending champion Eddie Pepperell, four-time winner Matt Wallace and Scotland's Robert MacIntyre to win his first European Tour title at the Betfred British Masters today.

The Swede birdied the final two holes at Hillside Golf Club after dropping two strokes on the previous two holes, to finish one ahead of Pepperell, Wallace and MacIntyre, the young Scot chasing his first victory on just his 14th European Tour start.
There was a four-way tie on 15 under par when Kinhult and Wallace stood on the 18th tee, but Kinhult converted a birdie putt from eight feet to claim his maiden title, becoming the third Swedish winner of the British Masters after Alex Noren in 2016 and Johan Edfors in 2006.
MacIntyre looked to have dropped out of contention after a double bogey on the par five second hole, but he pulled a shot back on the fourth hole and then played the back nine in five under par to race up the leaderboard.
Pepperell, defending the title he won at Walton Heath in October, carded a final round six under par 66, while Wallace, who shared the 54-hole lead with Kinhult, signed for a one under par round to join him and MacIntyre in second place.
Richie Ramsay took solo fifth place on 12 under par after a level par round, with English pair Jordan Smith and Paul Waring sharing sixth on 11 under.
Tournament host Tommy Fleetwood shared eighth place on ten under par with five other golfers, including former World Number One Martin Kaymer.
Player quotes
Marcus Kinhult: “It’s unreal. I've been dreaming about it for such a long time and to finally do it is amazing. My knees were shaking on that final putt. My hands were shaking. Everything was shaking. It’s hard to remember now. Just so much nerves and so much willpower I guess. It’s a cool feeling.

“It was a real fight today. I played solid the front nine. Could have played better and then played okay beginning of the back nine and made bogey on 15 and 16. Then just managed to hole two good putts on 17 and 18.
“It was tough. I just tried to stay patient, composed and somehow I made those two last birdies. It is great. This is a very prestigious event and a nice little trophy to have. To get it as my first win is special.

“I had a great first impression when I got here Monday. I was just loving it here. The weather has been fantastic over the weekend. The crowds have been great crowds this week. I was surprised to see that many coming out on the weekend, since it's a Premier League day today.
Robert MacIntyre: “I just stuck to the game plan. I  doubled the second early on but my caddie said to me, just be patient. Really this week was probably the best I've hit my irons. I hit them much better this week. I struggled a bit off the tee. I thought, I just had to hang in. Today on the 16th tee, I looked back and thought, this is what it's all about. The fans were brilliant. Tommy was great, as well.”
Eddie Pepperell: “It was a good round. Very steady, really. I only hit a couple of bad shots but it was very steady. The whole week, I only made two bogeys actually which for me is remarkable.

I kind of set myself a target of 17 a round after the turn, and I thought, I expected those guys to get to 17 -- get to 16 in the end. They were not far off that. Pins weren't easy today and the pressure at the end playing with those guys, you can never be too sure. But fair play to Marcus. He's been a good player for a while, so it is good to see.”
Tommy Fleetwood: “I think it's been great. My own performance wasn't good particularly, from start to finish, I didn't hit it great. But you know, I could have hit them better on the last few holes, of course I could have. Things maybe caught up with me in the end. I was disappointing the way I played.

“I couldn't have asked for more from the event. It is the first event I ever had a part in hosting and brought it to Southport, and you never know how it's going to go. It's been amazing.

“I couldn't have asked for anything more from everybody who has turned out, or just watching or working the event and volunteering and made it such a great event and very memorable for me.”

LILY MAY  COMPLETES IRISH-

WELSH OPEN TITLES' DOUBLE

England’s Lily May Humphreys pulled off a dream double today when she won the Irish Women’s Open Stroke Play Championship just seven days after securing the Welsh title.

The 17-year-old international was 10-under par after three rounds at Co Louth Golf Club and six shots clear of her closest challenger, Romy Meekers of The Netherlands.

Humphreys, from Stoke by Nayland in Essex, led from wire-to-wire after her opening score of seven-under 67. She added two-under 72 in the second round and finished off with today’s 73.

Windy conditions dictated the strategy for the closing round. Humphreys remarked: “The aim today was to try and just make my pars and take opportunities for birdies when they came – I knew the opportunities weren’t going to be many given the wind so it was about not giving shots away.

“I did a pretty good job of that on the front nine - I hit three greens and was only one over par so I was quite impressed with myself! I hit eight greens on the back nine which helped settle me and it was a lot less stressful coming in.”

This is the latest in a string of wins by the teenager, who made her Curtis Cup debut at the age of 16 and has previously held titles including the English Women’s Amateur, the Scottish Women’s Stroke Play and the British Girls’ Championship.

Her next challenge will be the 2019 English Women’s Amateur at Saunton – aiming to recapture the title she won in 2017. But her longer-term aim is to follow in the footsteps of Georgia Hall and Charley Hull on the LPGA Tour.

Humphreys said: “I’ve been home schooled and next year I have my A-levels. After that I’m hoping to turn professional and I want to go to LPGA Q-School, but I am going to go to LET Q-School this year to get the experience. Hopefully I’ll secure some LET invites then to get more experience and move me up a level so I am ready to turn then.”

Humphreys’ double win echoes that of Scotland’s Hannah McCook, who won both Irish and Welsh titles in 2018. She’s now playing on the Ladies European Tour’s Access Series.

It was a case of history repeating itself today at Co. Louth Golf Club as Lily May Humphreys captured the Irish Women’s Open Stroke Play Championship just seven days after securing the Welsh Women’s Open Stroke Play at Royal St. David’s. Just 12 months ago the same feat was achieved by Hannah McCook (Scotland) who now competes on the Ladies European Access Tour.

Humphreys began the day with a three shot lead over Hazel MacGarvie (Scotland) and has her tee time approached, conditions determined the strategy for the day.

“The aim today was to try and just make my pars and take opportunities for birdies when they came – I knew the opportunities weren’t going to be many given the wind so it was about not giving shots away. I did a pretty good job of that on the front nine  - I hit three greens and was only one over par so I was quite impressed with myself! I hit eight greens on the back nine which helped settle me and it was a lot less stressful coming in.”

A one-under 73 final round was good for a six shot advantage over Romy Meekers (Netherlands) who finished runner-up for the second year in a row

For Humphreys, the aim is to follow in the footsteps of Georgia Hall, Charley Hull and Lexi Thompson on the LPGA Tour.

“I’ve been home schooled and next year I have my A-levels. After that I’m hoping to turn Professional and I want to go to LPGA Q-School but I am going to go to LET Q-School this year to get the experience. H
"Hopefully I’ll secure some LET invites then to get more experience and move me up a level so I am ready to turn then.”

While conditions proved challenge for some, the best score of the day came from Aboyne's Shannon McWilliam who finished fourth overall with a final-round 72.

“I should have been at least four under today probably. I got to four at one point and dropped a couple coming in – I hit it to the front edge on 18 there and three putted for par as well which is frustrating but I’ll be happy with it later on, just now it’s annoying!”

Deirdre Smith attracted a large crowd of home support as she secured a fifth place finish.

“The support I’ve got from Baltray is always 100% and I’m very proud to be a member of this club and I hope they’re proud of me.”

Smith finishes best of the home players, however that is not why she continues to play the game.

It’s not a consideration to be honest, I don’t go out there thinking I want to finish best of the Irish or anything, I want to go out and play the best I can play and if it goes well then so be it. I’m still enjoying playing golf, I’m still enjoying being competitive and if I wasn’t enjoying it I wouldn’t be doing it.”

“At the end of the day I go out there because I enjoy myself, I’m not trying to prove anything, I’m not thinking about scores, I’m only thinking about enjoying it and I really enjoyed the challenge today to be honest.”

For Smith, a long amateur career continues to flourish despite, in her own words, “being around for 100 years!”.

“Just keep enjoying it, if you do that you’ll have longevity but if you’re putting pressure on yourself and you’re trying to score, that’s short term, because if you don’t meet those expectations you end up giving up. If you go out to enjoy yourself, focus on what the sport offers you, the friendships, the fun, the exercise, the fresh air and the courses – you’re a winner every time.”

Humphreys, MacGarvie and Meekers final grouping at Irish Women’s Open

Deirdre Smith, a member of Co. Louth, is best of the Irish players

  • 11 May 2019
Caption: Lily May Humphreys (England) | Golffile
Lily-May Humphreys remains best placed to capture the Irish Women’s Open Stroke Play Championship on Sunday at Co. Louth following another round under par on the Baltray links. Although not quite as impressive as her opening 67, a two-under par round of 72 today in tougher conditions is nothing to be sniffed at.

“It was tougher today, there were no holes down or into the wind, it was all sideways which is harder really - especially allowing for the wind off the tee as you really don’t want to end up any of the fairway bunkers.”

“I didn’t putt as well today but I hit more of the par five’s in two so it was just like easy 2-putts and then I made quite a few bogeys – I think I made like 5, so where I missed a couple of greens I wasn’t really holing out the best compared to yesterday.”

Humphreys will take a three shot lead into the final round however there is a strong list of players lining up behind her including Scotland’s Hazel MacGarvie who posted two rounds of 71.

“I shot the same score as yesterday but there was actually a big difference in the two rounds – yesterday I wasn’t striking the ball as well but I still managed to get up and down quite a lot, especially on the back 9. Today I actually struck the ball a lot better and hit more greens and just made a lot of pars and birdies – it was pretty solid.”

Two shots further back sits Romy Meekers (Netherlands) who is playing her third consecutive Irish Women’s Open Stroke Play at Co. Louth.

“I started with a bogey as I couldn’t reach the green as it was straight into the wind but then I chipped in for eagle on two which was really nice! I was on the third green in two and 2-putted and hit it close on six so it was just some nice iron shots that helped me. The wind was turning a lot and it’s not like you can predict the wind from the previous hole as it could have changed direction.”

Co. Louth is proving a winner for the players who are enjoying the fair test the course is providing.

“It’s your typical links course, it’s quite like Western Gailes and it actually reminds me a lot of Ballybunion where we played Home Internationals last year when Scotland won. I really like it, the greens are in such good condition and it’s set up well.”

While Humphreys, MacGarvie and Meekers will make up the final group at 10.50am on Sunday, Deirdre Smith, a member of Co. Louth,s its best of the Irish on one under par. Shannon Burke (Ballinrobe), who was four under for her opening nine holes today, slipped back to finish one-over for the tournament while Paula Grant (Lisburn) added a disappointing 77 to her opening 73.

ROUND 3 REPORT FROM BRITISH MASTERS AT HILLSIDE G C

Round three report
England’s Matt Wallace shares the lead with Sweden’s Marcus Kinhult going into the final round of the Betfred British Masters, with tournament host Tommy Fleetwood well-placed just three shots back at Hillside Golf Club.
Kinhult posted a four under par round of 68 to set the clubhouse target of 14 under par, which was then matched by four-time European Tour winner Wallace who signed for a round of 70.
Wallace had held a one stroke overnight lead and quickly extended that advantage when he started his third round with three consecutive birdies. A further gain on the 11th hole meant took his run of holes without a bogey to 47, but that impressive streak ended with bogey on the 12th before a double bogey six on the 15th.
Kinhult, who had earlier eagled the 11th hole, also double bogeyed the 15th before posting back-to-back birdies on the 16th and 17th holes, while Wallace also birdied the 17th to join the him at the top of the leaderboard heading into the final day.
Scotland’s Richie Ramsay is two shots back on 12 under par after a round of 71 and his compatriot Robert MacIntyre is a further shot adrift following a 68.
MacIntyre shares fourth place with Southport favourite Fleetwood, the tournament host who delighted the sell-out crowd of 17,204 with a back nine charge to ignite his challenge.
The Ryder Cup star was one over par for the day heading to the 11th tee, but eagled that hole and added birdies on the 12th, 14th and 17th for a round of 68 to move firmly into contention on 11 under par, three strokes behind Wallace and Kinhult.

Matt Wallace: "I was trying to take a little note out of Tiger's book, and try and let them try and catch you, but I probably hit two bad shots today, and that's it and that's what happens in golf. I'm pretty happy with how I handled myself out there today.
“I’m obviously frustrated with dropping a couple on the 15th hole. But I think I showed a little bit different character there to not let it affect me too much and then step up on the next hole, which is tough. If you miss that green right, you're stuffed, and I put it to a good length and played the last three holes really nicely. It would have been nice to have holed that putt on the last, but I would have taken 2-under at the start of the day, seeing how windy it was. We are in great shape. It's not about winning it on Saturday, it's about putting yourself in good position, so I’m looking forward to tomorrow now.”
Marcus Kinhult: "It was tough in the wind today but I managed to post a good score, so I'm happy. I won the Lytham Trophy a few years ago and it is just right around the corner. I just like to be here. I like how the course is set up. You have to manage your game a little bit different. t's a tight leaderboard. But it's always nice to be in the lead. I will enjoy it tomorrow.”
Tommy Fleetwood: "I've been a bit slow, really, for two and half days pretty much. That front nine, I didn't do much as I started and good to get something going on the back. A little goal was to give them something to cheer about 11 and 12 got that going a little bit. I hit a poor putt on 9 and 10 a little bit of a silly three-putt. Didn't feel like I did too much wrong on either of them and then yeah, the finish was great.

It's been brilliant, hasn't it. I know I've got another day to play but already I'm just very, very grateful to everybody that's been involved in the event and made this a great spectacle. It's been fantastic and I've got another day of golf left and I'll focus on it a bit tomorrow, but it has been a very special week.”
