John Jack junior wins
Renfrewshire Boys' Champion of Champions' title
John Jack junior (Gourock) beat Jonny Murphy (Erskine) 5 and 3 in the final of the Renfrewshire Golf Union Boys' Champion of Champions' competition at Paisley
Golf Club on Sunday, April 21, once again generously sponsored by Greenlaw
Garage, Paisley, www.greenlawgarge.com
The match was a
bit of a scrappy affair early on with Murphy going one up with a birdie at
the second, but some poor course management by both players saw Jack two up after five holes, and three up after the eighth.
Murphy won the ninth and the next three holes were halved before Jack took command as his opponent failed to
make par at 13.
The game was finally closed out when
Jack holed his first putt of any size at the 15th to win by 5 and 3.
In Friday's semi-finals Murphy beat Johnny Greig (Old Ranfurly) by two holes and Jack beat Cameron Percy (Fereneze) 5 and 4.
On the previous
Sunday, Greig had a walk over as defending champion Roddy McAuley was playing in a Scottish Golf event at Montrose. Murphy
beat Andrew Brisbane (Ranfurly Castle) 2 and 1, John Jack beat Michael Lees (Whitecraigs) and Cameron Percy beat Jack Tourish (Elderslie) 3 and 2.
In the
preliminary rounds Greig beat Euan Urquhart (Paisley) 2 ad 1, Jonny Murphy
had a walk over against Liam Lawell (East Renfrewshire), who failed to appear, while
Jack Tourish beat Aaron McCue (Greenock Whinhill) 5 and 4.
