Hutcheon cannot explain why he keeps winning
the Emtec Group Deer Park Masters!

Greig Hutcheon says his form over the years at the Emtec Group Deer Park Masters is ‘inexplicable’ after capturing his sixth win in the Tartan Tour £16,800 Order of Merit event at Livingston today.
Hutcheon, who is based at the Paul Lawrie Golf Centre in Aberdeen, followed up his first-round 67 with a four-under-par 68 to finish top of the leaderboard and pick up the £2,688 first prize.
He also had to contend with the high quality golf of his fellow pros as North Lanarkshire Leisure’s Paul O’Hara was forced to settle for second place, while defending champion Gavin Hay carded the round of the second day with a six-under-par 66.
“To win here for the sixth time is just inexplicable,” said Hutcheon. “The thing that’s becoming apparent to me out on the golf course is the breaks I’m getting and the putts I’m holing at key moments and I can’t explain why I always perform so well at Deer Park.
“I still go back to the first round I ever played here and I shot the course record. It’s all just snowballed from that. I’ve got good memories on almost every hole and that puts you in a fantastic place to challenge out on the golf course.
“I got off to such a great start. I drove the first and managed to roll the putt in for an eagle from 25 feet. I was getting the lucky breaks when I needed them and those are the things that make the difference.”
This year marked the 15th staging of the event at Deer Park Golf and Country Club in Livingston with a total of 50 PGA professionals and 300 amateurs taking part over the two days.
“I can’t explain why I win here so often,” continued the Banchory pro. “There’s something about me and Deer Park. I’ve been coming here for the last ten years and I’ve never played so consistently well at one course over the years. I’m just waiting to come here one day and shoot 85. It will happen and I’ll take it no bother because I’ve had so many good days here.

“Deer Park is a very good course and I think it’s under-rated in Scotland. It moves left to right, it moves right to left, it has some undulation changes, it’s a really good course and the condition of it just keeps getting better with the work that’s going on every year.
"It copes really well when it rains heavily now, which it hadn’t necessarily done in the past. The greens were great across both days and I can’t wait to come back in 2019”

Banff's Callum Bruce earns top seed status at Scottish Amateur Championship

Callum Bruce (Duff House Royal) has earned top seed status for the match-play stages of the Scottish men's amateur championship which start at Blairgowrie Golf Club tomorrow (Thursday).
Bruce (pictured) posted scores of 71 and 66 for a total of seven-under-par 137 over the Rosemount and Lansdowne courses at the Perthshire venue.
146 was the limit mark for the 64 match-play qualifiers. But two of the players on 146 were eliminated on a countback: D Lawrence (Ballumbie Castle) and S Macpherson (Bothwell Castle).

 .
Scotland international Sandy Scott (Nairn) returned the lowest round of the day on the Lansdowne Course, a 5-under par 67, to go into the match play stages as the second seed, after finishing on 6-under par 138.
Old Course Ranfurly’s Jamie Stewart produced a blemish-free 65 today, to finish qualifying in a share of third spot with Turnhouse’s Euan McIntosh and Michael Brodie (Alyth) on 5-under 139.
Top seed Callum Bruce said: “I played well over the two days, the main difference between today and yesterday was that I finished my round stronger, with three birdies instead of bogeys.
“The Rosemount is going to be a great course for the match-play stages, a lot of holes could be tied with birdies, however if you hit if off-line you could be staring at a bogey, it’s going to be an exciting few days golf.”
Overnight leader and past Scottish U18 boys champion Eric McIntosh, who equalled the Rosemount Course record on day one with an 8-under par 66, carded a 4-over-par 76 today but is safely through to the match-play stages after finishing in a share of sixth place.
McIntosh said: “Yesterday I took advantage of the par-5’s, played solid and holed some good putts. Today was a bit more of a struggle, I hit the ball well but wasn’t so good on the greens.”
“When you come into the week the first goal is to get into the match-play draw, so that is done and in match-play anything can happen. All you can do is take one match at a time, enjoy it and see what happens.
After differing fortunes over the two days, McIntosh laughed: “For sure, after my two rounds, it is definitely good news for me that the match-play stages are on the Rosemount Course.”
The cut mark fell at two-over par, with Bothwell Castle’s Scott Macpherson and Dan Lawrence (Ballumbie Castle) agonisingly missing out on reaching the 64-man match-play stage on a count-back.

Course-record 62 gives Coupland a four-stroke lead on EuroPro Tour

Dave Coupland shot a course record 62 (-11) to leave the rest of the field in his wake and lead by four shots at the PGA EuroPro Tour event at Foxhills Golf Club & Resort, Surrey.

Coupland (Woodhall Spa Golf Club), set the course record at the Pro-Am carding a 63 (-10) before breaking his own record 24 hours later, going one better posting a 62 (-11), marking the lowest ever one-round score in the PGA EuroPro Tour’s history.

The previous record came in 2016 when Billy Hemstock carded a final round of 61 (-10) at Montrose Golf Links.

A blemish-free score card which consisted of 11 birdies and seven pars; Coupland admitted it was a near-perfect round: “What can you say? It was unbelievable out there today. It’s so difficult to follow up a low round with another one but to better it was amazing.

“I knew I was playing solid yesterday, I felt comfortable out there and had a game plan and stuck to it today. I was able to read the greens well and the putts just dropped in today.

“I’m not going to get ahead of myself because I know it will be difficult to replicate that tomorrow. It’s a new day and I have to approach with a blank slate.

“There’s only one poor shot that I played today that sticks in my mind and even then, I was able to get up and down to make birdie, but other than that it was a perfect day.”

After missing his first cut of the season last week, the bounce back of all bounce backs means Coupland heads into the second round with a three-shot lead over his nearest competitor. Will Enefer (Retail Furniture Ltd) sits in second after carding a superb opening round of 66 (-7), dropping just two shots over his first 18 holes.

A cut to the leading 50 professionals and ties will be made after Thursday's second round.

Two Yorkshire men head qualifying at Formby and Hesketh

Sam Rook

Rook's a high flyer

in England amateur

championship

There’s a Yorkshire one-two at the head of the leaderboard for qualifying at the English men’s amateur championship, with Sam Rook pipping Sam Bairstow to become top seed.
Rook (Lindrick) and Bairstow (Hallowes) both played the 36 holes of stroke play at Formby and Hesketh Golf Clubs in five under-par. However, Rook took the honours with his better second round of three-under 69 while Bairstow was two-under, both at Formby.
Breathing down their necks is a group of impressive layers who shot four-under: David Langley (Castle Royle), another Yorkshireman Nick Poppleton (Wath), Andrew Wilson (Darlington) and Matty Lamb, Hexham.

Tomorrow Rook (pictured) takes on Dan O’Loughlin (Ruddington Grange) in the first round proper, but Bairstow has to wait to discover his opponent.
The top 64 players and ties qualified for the match play stages – and with a total of 73 players going through, that means a preliminary round involving 18 players.
George Crow (Rochester and Cobham Park) missed out on a place in the knock out but had the satisfaction of a hole in one on the 16th at Formby.

Trevor Foster shoots a 10-birdie score of 63  at Senior Amateur Championship

R and A NEWS RELEASE
Trevor Foster played one of the rounds of his life to leave the international field trailing in his wake at the 50th Seniors Amateur Championship at Royal Porthcawl in South Wales.

The 58-year-old Lancastrian (pictured) from the Accrington and District club bagged ten birdies and dropped just one shot over the 6,776 yards of the fearsome links to be round in 63, seven clear of his nearest rivals.
"I'm a bit in a daze to be honest," said Foster, as he came out of the scorers' cabin.
"I felt good out there today and hit it really, really well. Probably one of the best rounds I've ever played," said the retired club greenkeeper, who paid tribute to his former Lancashire team mate and captain Bill Bromilow, who was on his bag.
"He's had all the numbers right for me. I've just had to hit the ball."
Birdie spree
With a stiff breeze blowing off the Bristol Channel when Foster teed off at 9am he was soon into his stride with a birdie at the 374 yard first, hitting driver and a wedge to 10ft and holing the putt.
He didn't pick up his next birdie until the 385 yard sixth with a 3-wood and a wedge to five feet, then he parred the short seventh before bagging four more birdies on the bounce.
He hit, driver, 3-wood and pitch to a foot to birdie the par five eighth, then driver and 8-iron to 15ft at the ninth to be out in 32.
Foster on fire
Driver, pitch to 6ft and one putt got him started on the back nine, before he hit his 6-iron to 60ft on the shorth eleventh and sank it.
He could only manage a par at the long 12th but then birdied the 438 yard 13th with a driver and a 7-iron to a foot. It was driver and 6-iron to 6ft on the 15th and another one putt before he dropped his only shot at the 16th.
His 3-wood off the tee found a poor lie in the fairway and he could only advance it 80 yards. His pitch third finished 15ft away and he took two putts.
Strong finish
Unfazed he finished in style with birdies at the two closing holes.
A drive and a 5-iron got him to the front of the long 17th and he had two putts from 60 ft, then a drive and an 8-iron finished on the front fringe at the last and he holed it from 20ft.
Winner of the Irish and West of England Seniors already this year, Foster, a former Lancashire champion at open and senior level, is playing in his third Seniors Amateur.
"I was eleventh I think at Formby and then missed the cut at Sunningdale last year when I got the worst of the weather."
Chasing pack
Three players are in joint second place on two under par seven strokes behind Foster.
Gene Elliott from Des Moines, Iowa along with fellow American Todd Hendley from Columbus, North Carolina and East Kilbride teacher Ken Gallagher, playing in his first Seniors Amateur championship.
Elliott, joint runner-up at Sunningdale on his first appearance in the Seniors last year, finished the front nine with three birdies after dropping a shot at the fifth to be out in 34 and he was level on the way home with a bogey at the 14th and a birdie at the 17th.
Hendley had birdies at the first, sixth, eighth, 12th and 17th and dropped shots at the second, 13th and 15th.

Gallagher was out in 33 with a birdie at the sixth and an eagle at the eighth, then dropped shots at the 14th and 16th and birdied the 17th on the way home.
Former winners
Two former three-time winners of the Seniors, Americans Chip Lutz and Paul Simson shot 72 and 76 respectively, while last year's winner at Sunningdale Bryan Hughes from Hesketh in Lancashire opened with a 79 and 2014 champion Brady Exber from the US had a 74.
Three players are on 71 and nine on level par 72 with the top 60 and ties after the second round going through to play the final 18 holes on Friday.

Locke ready to rock on debut as a rookie pro in Sweden

This image of Sam Locke is displayed by courtesy of Getty Images

It’s been a whirlwind few weeks for Sam Locke and he can now barely contain his excitement ahead of making his professional debut at this week’s Swedish Challenge hosted by Robert Karlsson.
Locke won the Silver Medal at the Open Championship last month as the only amateur to make the cut for the last two rounds at Carnoustie
The 19-year-old eventually finished tied 75th after a closing seven over par 78, due to what he describes as a ‘poor back nine,’ but he was just two over par after three rounds at the notoriously difficult Carnoustie links, alongside Shubhankar Sharma and above the likes of Paul Casey, Brooks Koepka and Henrik Stenson, to name a few.
After following in the footsteps of some of the world’s best players by winning the Silver Medal, Locke is now focussed on forging a career in the professional ranks, starting this week at Katrineholms Golfklubb on the European Challenge Tour.
“I’m really excited for my first event as a pro and I can’t wait to get going,” he said. “The course is great, it’s in lovely condition and I really enjoyed playing today, roll on Thursday.
“It’s my first professional tournament so I’m just coming in and trying to do the best I can and try my hardest. Wherever that leads me, then what will be will be.
“It’s a good feeling to be the top amateur in the Open and to make the cut. I had a poor finish there; the back nine on Sunday wasn’t great but you learn lots from that and you take that into this week. I’ll be aiming just to enjoy it and do the best I can.
“I’ve only played one professional tournament and this is my first playing as a pro so I’m just going out to enjoy it and do the best I can.”
Locke is the reigning Scottish amateur champion, and he could have opted to defend the title at Blairgowrie this week before making the switch from the amateur ranks, so why take the decision to turn professional now?
“I just felt now was the right time and I just feel like I dealt with things well at The Open,” he said. “I really enjoyed the fact that there were lots of crowds and media and things; I just enjoyed the whole professional feel.
“I thought now was a nice time because of things that come with winning the Silver Medal. I’ve always wanted to turn professional but that obviously accelerated it.
“It was a decision taken with family (his father Andrew is a coach at the Paul Lawrie Golf Centre).
Locke is a product of the Paul Lawrie Foundation, who aim to get as many youngsters as possible playing golf, and the 1999 Open champion offered Locke some advice ahead of his first professional outing.
“Paul’s obviously given me some advice and you’ve got to treat it as any other tournament,” he continued. “I’m going to have to get used to it; I’m a professional now and I just can’t wait for all the tournaments coming up.
“He’s been helpful because he’s been and done everything and to have a guy like that is pretty cool to have there and I feel like I’ve got to make the most of this opportunity.”
Joining Locke in a strong field in Sweden this week are Road to Ras Al Khaimah leader Joachim B. Hansen, two-time Challenge Tour winner Oscar Lengden and tournament host and European Ryder Cup vice-captain Robert Karlsson.
The action begins at Katrineholms Golfklubb at 7.30am local time with Filippo Bergamaschi, Nathan Kimsey and amateur Oliver Gillberg first off.
