South heading in direction of EuroPro Tour victory at Wychwood Park

NEWS RELEASE
Jack South carded a second round of 68 (-4) to lead by two shots heading into the final round of the HotelPlanner.com PGA EuroPro Tour’s Ablrate.com Championship at Wychwood Park Golf Club, as he goes in hunt of his maiden win on Tour.
South (Hagley Golf Club/Taymar Homes) bettered his opening round of 67 (-3) on a day where many of the first-round leaders moved backwards.
North was the only direction the Hagley man was heading after bouncing back from a tricky run of three bogeys at the midway point of his round.
Four birdies on his back nine and no blemishes means South is in the driving seat with 18 holes left to play at the Cheshire track.
Reflecting on his round he said: “The back nine is really key to scoring low on this course. The two bogeys on 17 and 18 shook me up, I had a word with my caddie and we knew that level par through those nine holes wasn’t the end of the world.”
“I thought to myself: ‘let’s start again’ and I was able to shoot four-under which I’m very pleased with.”
On what was key to his success South said: “I think it was a combination of everything coming together across 18 holes.
“I’ve just got to let it happen tomorrow. You’ve got to be headstrong to win on this tour. You can’t show weakness, as I have at times, but to bounce back as I did today is an encouraging sign ahead of the final round.”
Three golfers in the form of Dave Coupland (Woodhall Spa Golf Club), Marco Penge (Golf at Goodwood), and Richard Mansell (Beau Desert Golf Club) occupy second spot two shots back on five-under par.
Coupland was happy with his 36 inward half performance and he said: “I played steady today just like I did in the first round. I stuck to my game plan today and combined with some nice approach play I am in the mix with 18 to go.”
“I’m really pleased with my season so far, I’ve worked hard on technique and my mindset and I’m starting to see some results. The course is tough this week but it’s not affected my performance over 36 holes so I’m confident heading into tomorrow.”
Elsewhere, two-time EuroPro Tour winner Mark Young sneaked inside the cut mark, carding a second round of 69 (-3) to finish the first two rounds on three-over par for the Championship.
HOW THE SCOTS FARED
Craig Ross slipped from 66 to 75 for 141 and is now T8.
Other Scottish qualifiers: Danny Young T12 on 142 (74-68), Craig Lawrie 143 for T16 with scores of 69 and 74, Conor O'Neil T51 on 147 (71-76)
A cut to the leading 50 professionals and ties has now been made with those three-over par and better advancing to the final round.
Highlights of the Ablrate.com Championship will air on Sky Sports on Tuesday, 31st July.

Magical McEvoy leads in France

A back-nine birdie blitz by England’s Richard McEvoy earned him a seven-under-par 64 as he lea-frogged compatriot Paul Maddy to claim the Le Vaudreuil Golf Challenge lead at the end of Day One.
McEvoy, playing in the afternoon groups at Golf PGA France du Vaudreuil, made the turn at three under after a bogey-free opening stretch.
The Englishman then turned on the style as he tackled the front nine – his final nine holes. Four birdies, including two in a row to finish, meant he breezed past Maddy into first place after he had earlier set the target at six under.
McEvoy, last year’s SSE Scottish Hydro Challenge hosted by Macdonald Hotels and Resorts winner, holed an excellent 15-foot birdie putt to take the lead on the last hole and he was pleased with his putting in Normandy after being left frustrated at last week’s Italian Challenge presented by Cashback World.
“I putted beautifully today,” he said. “I found the greens very slow in Italy last week and I struggled getting the ball to the hole, but this week they’re a lovely pace. I seem to have got the pace quite nicely at the moment.
“I was good all-round. I drove the ball very well and hit a couple of poor shots towards the end off the tee but managed to get away with them.
“The eighth hole is probably one of the only tee shots on the golf course where you can’t see where your ball is going to land, which makes it difficult.”
McEvoy’s eye-catching, bogey-free round was particularly impressive as the wind began to pick up in the afternoon on a course which he believes ‘suits his eye’.
“It was very good,” he said. “I came off a bogey-free round of five under in Italy on Sunday and my game has been good recently.
“I love the course; it suits my eye quite well as it’s very similar to a British parkland course with the tree line so I’m very happy with my start.”
Englishman Maddy is joined on six under par by Christopher Mivis after the Belgian too carded a six under par 65 to sit a shot off the lead at the end of Day One.
Two off the top is Ross Kellett after the Scot claimed outright third place, courtesy of a five under par 66. Oliver Bekker, Jamie Rutherford and Peter Tarver-Jones are all on four under par, while a group of eight players sit a shot further back on three under.
Away from the top of the leaderboard, Italian Filippo Bergamaschi carded a hole-in-one at the par three third as he posted a level par 71. The 27 year old sent a nine iron, with a slight draw, straight into the hole from 150 yards to record the second ace of his career.
Road to Ras al Khaimah Number Four Stuart Manley, the highest-ranked player in the field, is tied 17th on two under par.

MALAYSIAN GREEN HAPPY TO TEE OFF WITH A 72 ON OPEN DEBUT

Malaysia’s rising star Gavin Green battled to an opening one-over-par 72 in his debut Major appearance at The 147th Open at Carnoustie today.
The big-hitting Green, who averaged 354 yards off the tee, marked his card with five birdies against six bogeys to trail by six shots at the world’s oldest Major championship.
“I hit it well. The bogeys were just bad breaks. I didn’t stay short enough of the pot bunkers but I was learning. My ball striking was good. Three of my birdies were all tap-ins. A couple of times I hit it into the bunkers and had to chip it out but overall, a one-over to start my first Major, I’ll take it,” said Green.
The 24-year-old Malaysian sealed his place in the year’s third Major by winning the Asian Tour Order of Merit crown last year, where he claimed one victory and five top-10 finishes.
He is the first Malaysian and the second youngest player, following a then 19-year-old Noh Seung-yul of South Korea in 2010, to have achieved the feat on the region’s premier Tour.
Despite closing with two straight bogeys, Green kept his head up and remained optimistic of putting up a lower score on Friday.
“I was just cruising out there. But towards the end, I just hit a couple of bad shots at the wrong time. I wasn’t nervous out there. I was calm and cool so it’s fine. We will keep to the same game plan tomorrow and just be careful of the bunkers which cost me two shots today.
“It wasn’t that tough coming down the stretch I think. I just hit shots that I shouldn’t hit. It was a good save for bogey on 17,” added Green, who earned his Asian Tour card for 2017 after finishing second on the 2016 Asian Development Tour Order of Merit.
Green, who has his father Gary on the bag this week, is the third and youngest Malaysian, following Iain Steel (1996) and Danny Chia (2005, 2008 and 2010), to qualify for The Open.
Green, ranked 203rd place on the latest Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR), also had the opportunity to represent his country at the prestigious 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janiero.

RECORD-BREAKING NUMBER OF FANS ATTEND THE 147TH OPEN AT CARNOUSTIE

R and A NEWS RELEASE
The 147th Open at Carnoustie will be the best-attended to date at the renowned Angus venue.

This week’s attendance has already surpassed the previous record of 157,000, set when Paul Lawrie defeated Jean van de Velde and Justin Leonard in a dramatic play-off to lift the Claret Jug in 1999.
This year has been the one of the fastest-selling Championships to be staged in Scotland, outside St Andrews, as fans of The Open have eagerly snapped up tickets to watch the world’s best golfers begin their quest to be crowned Champion Golfer of the Year.

Martin Slumbers, Chief Executive of The RandA, said, “We know that there has been real excitement among fans about The Open returning to Carnoustie’s great links and the record number of spectators at the Championship here underlines its reputation as one of the world’s great sporting events.

“Attending The Open is a memorable experience full of iconic moments and we look forward to welcoming fans from all around the world for this global celebration of golf.”

Almost 4000 spectators have already taken advantage of
free accommodation for young people and a low-cost rate
for adults at The Open Camping Village, with Friday and
Saturday nights fully booked since May.
High levels of demand led to Weekend Bundle Ticket and
Twilight Ticket categories being sold out in March, some four
months ahead of the Championship. Hospitality packages
have also proven to be very popular among fans with all six
packages having now sold out.
Fans are still able to secure their place at The Open this week with a limited number of daily and weekly tickets still available.

For under-25s, The Open is more accessible than ever with Youth Tickets currently available for as little as £40 for Championship days. Children under the age of 16 can attend free of charge under The Open’s ‘Kids Go Free’ initiative.

Tickets can be purchased by visiting TheOpen.com

Olsen, Gomez share the lead but others in
contention for Aberdeen Senior Masters prize
.

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Dan Olsen from Florida looked to have one hand on the £5,000 winner's cheque after a first-round, seven-under-par 63 in the Aberdeen Senior Masters 54-hole tournament over the Meldrum House Country Hotel course at Oldmeldrum.
But a second-round, par-matching score of 70 loosened his grip and Olsen is now sharing the lead on seven-under 133 with Argentina's Rafel Gomez who shot the joint-best round of the second day, a five-under-65, to join him in the pole position.
It might not be a final-round shoot-out between the two as Argentina's Cesar Monasterio, who finished third in a German seniors' event last week, is only two behind them on 135 (66-69) and England's Mark Ashworth jumped into contention with a late in the day, second-round 66 to share third place with Monasterio.
"It was a different course today," said Olsen. "Certainly different, more difficult pin positions and I had only two birdies, cancelled out by two bogeys."
Gomez, in contrast, had a bag of six birdies, with gains at the fourth, fifth, ninth, 11th, 13th and 17th in halves of 33 and 32. But for a lone bogey at the third the Argentinian would have taken over the lead on his own.
Leading Scots are Fraser Mann (69-70) and Kenny Hutton (68-71), both on 139, a shot ahead of Nick Robson (Meldrum House), bidding to win the leading amateur award again, and Craig Ronald (69-71), Andrew Oldcorn (68-72) and Robert Arnott (71-69), all on 140.

+This third staging of the Aberdeen Senior Masters is sponsored again by Thistle Windows, Gymrental and Meldrum House Country Hotel.
