Jasmine and Rachel win scratch and handicap titles at Kirriemuir

Left to right: Dawn Darling, Rachel Mathieson, Jasmine Mackintosh and Sammy Leslie.

Double whammy by Hazlehead pair at North of Scotland finals

Two Hazlehead Golf Club members won the main trophies on finals day at the North of Scotland women's golf championship at Kirriemuir Golf Club today, writes Colin Farquharson.
Jasmine Mackintosh, the leading qualifier, beat Sammy Leslie (Murcar Links) 3 and 2 in the scratch final to win the Gifford Trophy.
Rachel Mathieson beat Dawn Darling (Kirriemuir) by one hole in the handicap final to earn the Angus Salver. Rachael plays off eight and Dawn 17. Dawn was the leading handicap match-play qualifier.

When last did one club have the winners of both scratch and handicap in the North of Scotland championship? Lynne Terry (Cruden Bay) has the answer:
"It must have been around 20 years ago or so but I seem to remember at Nairn Dunbar Jill Harrison won the scratch and I won the handicap.  You may need to ask Jasmine and Rachael to look at the engraving on the trophies to check!"
The scratch final at Kirriemuir was a quality match with Jasmine birdieing seven holes (third, fourth, sixth, seventh, ninth, 11th and 12th) while Sammy birdied five holes (sixth, 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th)
Leslie was six down at the ninth where Mackintosh almost holed her second shot from 140yd. Her ball hit the flagstick.
Sammy holed a 30ft putt at 10 for birdie. Then she had four birdies in a row to try to pull it back but, in Sammy's words: "Jasmine's putting was awesome."
Hard luck, Sammy! Five birdies in the North of Scotland final would normally win it.

INTERNATIONAL FIELD FROM 78 COUNTRIES TO COMPETE IN THE JUNIOR OPEN

R and A NEWS RELEASE
A field of 142 emerging boy and girl golfers from 78 countries will arrive in Scotland to compete in the Junior Open at the Eden Course, St Andrews on the eve of The 147th Open at Carnoustie next week.
Founded in 1994 and coming under The R and A's administrative umbrella in 2000, the Junior Open is played in the days leading up to The Open, and at a nearby course.
This biennial championship will be played over the Eden Course from Monday 16 to Wednesday 18 July marking the first time it has been held in St Andrews.
Champion Golfers Zach Johnson and Darren Clarke welcomed the junior golfers to the 2016 event at Kilmarnock (Barassie) and plans are being made for another golfing hero to welcome this year’s competitors at the Opening Ceremony being held on Sunday 15 July by the 18th green on the Old Course.
Duncan Weir, Executive Director – Golf Development at The R&A, said, “The Junior Open provides talented young golfers from around the world with a fantastic opportunity to play in a prestigious international competition on the eve of The Open.
“The championship continues to produce an excellent standard of golf and we have seen many past competitors, including several now major champions, make their mark in the Junior Open.  We can look forward to three exciting days of golf.”
Previous Junior Open winners include reigning Masters champion, Patrick Reed, 2013 LPGA Rookie of the Year, Moriya Jutanugarn and Portugal’s Pedro Lencart Silva, who followed up his win at Kilmarnock (Barassie) in 2016 by lifting the 2017 Boys Amateur title.  This made Silva the second golfer to win both events following Sergio Garcia, Junior Open winner in 1994.
Other leading golfers who have featured in the Junior Open include Champion Golfers of the Year Jordan Spieth (2017), Rory McIlroy (2014) and 2010 US Women’s Open Champion, Paula Creamer.
Countries and associations from all over the world can send a boy and/or a girl aged between 12 and 16 to the Junior Open.  The event is contested over 54 holes of stroke play with all competitors then visiting The Open at Carnoustie on Thursday 19 and Friday 20 July.
The Eden Course is one of seven courses that forms St Andrews Links, commonly referred to as ‘The Home of Golf’. Opened in 1914, after demand on the existing courses grew, the Eden was designed by Harry Colt and is named after the Eden estuary.
Spectators are welcome at the Eden Course and scoring will be available on www.RandA.org

FOUNDATION TEAM ON FORM AT BLAIRGOWRIE

FROM BANNERMAN MEDIA
THE Barrie Douglas Foundation team emerged victorious in the 2018 Blairgowrie US Junior Invitational.
The U18 Scottish select, which included some of the country’s top prospects, defeated national boys champions Perth and Kinross by 3.5 to 0.5 in the final.
The Foundation team, captained by Cameron Gallagher (Longniddry), featured Sean Logue (Royal Montrose), Connor Wilson (Castle Park), Liam Waldron (Royal Aberdeen), Dean Walsh (Lochgelly) and Aaron Hall (Kilspindie).
The home players saw off the challenge posed by teams drawn from eight US States who were confronted by conditions alien to competitions back home.
The three-day event followed a Ryder Cup format and the Scots handled the links-like, tree-lined fairways better than the American visitors.
The annual trans-Atlantic challenge has mushroomed, with more than 60 tourists staying in the area.
Arizona golf coach Brian Vogner, who organised the event in tandem with Blairgowrie junior convener Neil Wilkie, praised the Perthshire club for rolling out the welcome mat and laying on a well-organised tournament.
“It has been a wonderful event. We brought over high school teams representing Arizona, Idaho, Florida, Utah, Colorado, Illinois, Iowa and Missouri, with six state champions involved,” he said.
“We have some very good young players, who learned a few lessons from the Scots.
“The standard of Scottish golf is obviously very good and our guys found the style of play very different.
“They are used to hitting the ball very high and having it land softly but we don’t have that with the links-style golf we had here after your unusual summer weather.
“It’s good to see our players learning that you don’t always have to overpower a golf course.
“And some of our boys had never played matchplay golf. It has been such a good experience.
“This all began with just four boys coming over and this year we had 36 athletes here, with St Andrews and North Berwick also on our schedule.
“Blairgowrie Golf Club and Perth and Kinross County organise everything superbly and is run so professionally. We get such a warm welcome from members.
“It is an amazing place. There aren’t many places in the world like Blairgowrie Golf Club.”
Steven Morgan, Blairgowrie managing secretary, added: “It’s been a wonderful three days of great competition but the guys have all made good friends and contacts.
“Hopefully it is something we can build on in the future. I know our own Blairgowrie lads relished it and were proud of showing the Americans round their home courses, which are in superb condition.”
Steven Morgan (Blairgowrie managing secretary) congratulates Perth and Kinross captain Andrew Thornton and his runners-up, from left, Declan Gray, Fraser Matthews, Finlay Hamilton, Harry Clark and Andrew Scott
Tish Douglas, Susan Soutar and other charity supporters congratulate Cameron Gallagher, captain of the Barrie Douglas Foundation team, which won the Blairgowrie US Junior International.
