Paul Alexander wins Renfrewshire county stroke-play championship

RENFREWSHIRE GOLF UNION NEWS RELEASE
The County Stroke Play Championship of the Renfrewshire Golf Union was held at Caldwell Golf Club on Sunday 20th May and the conditions for the event were good due to the recent dry spell, but this made the course difficult to score on with the firm conditions. The scoring in the morning resulted in reduction only for handicap purposes with a CSS of 74 with a total of 44 players starting.

Matthew Clark (Kilmacolm) returned to defend his title and led in the first round with a two-under-par 69 which included four birdies on the back nine.
His nearest challenger was Euan Cleary (Erskine) with a four-birdie round of 71, followed on 72 by Stewart Watt (Old Ranfurly) and Alex Ferguson (Paisley), and on 73 Paul Alexander (Caldwell) and David Sibbald (Bonnyton).

In the afternoon round Clark came in with a 72 for a total of 141 to set the pace.
This was matched by Alex Ferguson with his second round of 69 for 141. A play-off looked likely as none of the first-round challengers managed to produce a better score.

However, the title was settled when local player Paul Alexander returned the round of the day, a gross 65 (33-32), which included seven birdies and a solitary bogey at the sixth to give him a total of 138.

The afternoon CSS was 73.

 LEADING FINAL TOTALS
CSS 74 (r/o) and 73
1 Paul Alexander (Caldwell) 138
2 Alex Ferguson (Paisley) 141
3 Matthew Clark (Kilmacolm)141
4 Stewart Watt (Old Ranfurly) 146

The leading available qualifiers now go forward to compete in the match-play championship, again over the Caldwell Golf Club course, with the semi-finals and final to be held on Sunday, May 27.

Full results of the event and the match-play draw can be found on the Renfrewshire Golf Union website.

The courtesy of Caldwell Golf Club given to the Renfrewshire Golf Union for the use of the course during the event was much appreciated.

Currie and Munro share two-stroke lead at Deer Park

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Chris Currie (Erskine) and Ross Munro (Duddingston) are sharing the lead two strokes clear of the field at the halfway stage of the 36-hole Tartan Tour Order of Merit event at Deer Park Golf and Country Club, Livingston.

They both shot seven birdies and two bogeys in compiling five-under-par 67s but otherwise their performances were contrasting.
Currie, pictured, was hot stuff on the outward journey with four-under 32 to the turn, birdieing the first, second, fourth, eighth and ninth but was not quite so good with one-under 35 for the inward nine.
Munro took 35 for the first nine holes but came rattling home in four-under-32 with birdies at the 10th, 11th, 12th, 17th and 18th.
Home course man Jamie McLeary in on his own in third place on 69.

Wise too smart for Leishman in Byron Nelson Classic play-off in Dallas

AUSTRALIAN GOLF NEWS
Marc Leishman was outduelled by rising tyro Aaron Wise on the day, finishing second at the AT and T Byron Nelson Classic in Dallas.
The Australian, who had held or shared the lead with Wise since his career-best opening round 62, fended off a host of other challengers to record his sixth top-10 finish of the US PGA Tour season.
But his closing three-under-par 68 couldn’t match 21-year-old Wise, who was stoic and calm beyond his years in shooting a bogey-free 65 to win by three shots at 23 under.
Wise, winner of the 2016 Australian Master of the Amateurs at Royal Melbourne, looked in better nick when the final round began four hours late after rain and lightning crossed Texas.
But an eagle two at the par-four fifth gave Leishman renewed hope.
Tour rookie Wise, though, was imperious in peeling off six birdies in seven holes from the fourth to pull clear. And even when he pulled a drive up the ninth hole that looked headed for the timber, it bounced forward and right off a sprinkler head and left him an easy approach which he cashed in for another birdie.
The agony didn’t end there for Australian golfers at Trinity Forest, despite two other outstanding efforts.
Adam Scott, who has played every US Open since 2002, needed no worse than a two-way share of ninth to ensure he returned to the world top 60 that would book a berth in the year’s second major after today’s event.
The Queenslander did his bit with a superb birdie up the last hole to shoot a 65 that momentarily had him in a share of sixth.
But Scott could only watch on as much of the rest of the field closed strongly and bumped his 15-under total back into a three-way share of ninth that left him agonisingly at No.61 in the projected rankings. The next and final automatic qualification cut-off is on June 11, giving Scott three weeks to climb into the top 60.
Matt Jones, whose most recent win on the US PGA Tour came in Texas in 2014, began promisingly with three birdies in his first five holes playing in the final group.
The wind came out of the Sydneysider’s sails with a couple of bogeys to close the outward nine, before an eagle on the 15th gave him renewed hope of a top-10 finish that would earn a start at the Fort Worth Invitational at nearby Colonial next week.
But a three-putt bogey on the part-three 17th and another on the last proved costly, dropping him to an even-par 71 and a share of 13th at 13 under.
Capping a solid if not spectacular week for the Aussies, Geoff Ogilvy closed with a 69 to finish T32 at nine under, Cameron Percy (70) and Rod Pampling (70) shared 70th at three under and Robert Allenby closed with a 74 to finish 75th at two over.
Inverness-born Russell Knox made the top 20, fiishing T16 on 12 under par 272 with scorrs of 69 69 68 and 66.
