Aberdeenshire won the Scottish women's county championship for the first time since 1986 in a nail-biting finish to the three-day finals at Kilmacolm Golf Club today.
Beaten by Midlothian on Saturday, Aberdeeenshire bounced back off the ropes to beat defending champions Renfrewshire 6-3 today.
That meant three teams finished with 2pt out of three - Aberdeenshire, Renfrewshire and Midlothian.
Shire won the games-won countback back the narrowest of margins: 15.5 to Renfrewshire's 15 and Midlothian's 14.5.
Aberdeenshire put the wheels under their last-day victory charge when they won all three foursomes against Renfrewshire and they shared the singles 3-3
Sammy Leslie (Murcar Links) and Kimberley Beveridge (Aboyne) won in the final-day foursomes and again in the singles but it was essentially a great team effort by Aberdeenshire, the Northern Division champions.
Beveridge was the champions' top points earner. She totalled 5.5pt out of a possible six, with five wins and a halved match. Jasmine Mackintosh was a close second with 5pt from four wins and two halves.
Shannon McWilliam and Sammy Leslie both earned 4pt, just ahead of Sheena Wood and Carol Wilson (3.5pt apiece).
And Aberdeenshire pulled it off without the services of their 15-year-old youngest-ever county champion Carmen Griffiths (Aboyne) who played in the world girls championship Canada, finishing 43rd with a 308 total.
She probably wishes she had been at Kilmacolm, helping Aberdeenshire win the title.
Winning Aberdeenshire team aptain Ann Smart said: “I’m so proud of the team, they were absolutely amazing.

Winning Aberdeenshire team aptain Ann Smart said: “I’m so proud of the team, they were absolutely amazing.
“After the result yesterday (Saturday), everybody was really disappointed and I just told the team to go and enjoy themselves today. If it works it works, and if it doesn’t it doesn’t, we had nothing to lose and everything to gain.
“It has been an amazing week, and we are very grateful to everyone at Kilmacolm for giving up their course for the week. The club and all the staff have bent over backwards for us all week, it has been a truly wonderful weekend with a fantastic end.”
One of the stars of the winning team, Kimberley Beveridge, who won five-and-a-half points out of six this week said: “It’s fantastic to get the opportunity to play in a team event, we had such a great team spirit and what a weekend it was, just wonderful.
“On Saturday night we didn’t really think we had a chance to be honest, but we turned it around today. Winning all three of the morning foursomes today was great and we kept the momentum going in the afternoon singles to come out on top.”
After being crowned champions, a delighted Shannon McWilliam said “We have been close to winning on a number of occasions in the past, but we kept missing out by half a point here and there, so it is a great way to end the competitive season, and finally get the victory for Aberdeenshire.”
