Seventh heaven for Streeter at Woburn

Spectators at Woburn Golf Club were treated to a truly stunning round of golf by Paul Streeter on Saturday as he posted a seven under par 65 to lead the Travis Perkins Masters seniors' tournament by seven shots at the end of Day Two at the Buckinghamshire venue.
Streeter had a three-shot overnight lead and he soon started to extend it, carding birdies at the third and eighth on the testing Duke's Course to make the turn in 33. He holed a further four birdies and an eagle on the back nine, with a single bogey at the 16th, to sign for a seven under 65, seven shots clear of Welshman Stephen Dodd in second place.
The Englishman was playing in a group with Carl Mason on Day Two and the 25-time Staysure Tour winner commented that it was the ‘finest golf he’s ever seen’ and Streeter is in no doubt that his second round 65 is up there with the best rounds he’s ever played.
“It was probably one of the best rounds I’ve ever played really,” he said. “I was nervous going out having a lead but I just played great. It was surreal. I just kept hitting it close and holing the putts. I holed a ten-footer for eagle on the 11th and that was probably the longest putt I holed.
“It’s great to hear. It’s certainly the best golf I’ve played but to hear it from someone like Carl, who is an absolute gent to play with, is really nice.
“I would have thought it’s my biggest lead, I’ve got no idea. It’s certainly my biggest lead in a big tournament, I can’t remember ever having a lead in a tournament.”
The 51 year old admits to feeling nervous prior to getting his second round under way but there was a sense of relief after hitting his opening tee shot down the middle of the fairway.
“I was not looking forward to the first tee shot because of the nerves but once I got that away, I felt good,” he said. “After I made bogey on 16 and hit a poor shot on 17, the up and down on that hole settled me down, and to play the 18th the way I did brought me back down to earth.
“The five iron into the par five was a highlight. I hit it as pure as I could hit it straight down the banner and where it’s pitched and finished, it can’t have been far from the hole. To hole that for eagle was special. The up and down on 17 was nice as well.”
Streeter’s 65 is the lowest round of the week so far but Dodd, who began the day at one under par, put together a five under 67 to sit in second place on six under. American Clark Dennis carded a four under 68 to make up what will be the final group tomorrow as he sits in third place on four under.
Scot Gary Orr (70-71) and Chris Williams are a shot further back on three under, with a group of four players on two under.
Dane Steen Tinning carded the first hole-in-one of the week when he aced the picturesque 134-yard par three third on Saturday.
Andrew Oldcorn is T31 on 148 with a pair of 74s.
