Longniddry's David Rudd, bidding to follow in the footsteps of Stuart MacLaren, last year's winner from the Lothians, set the first-round pace in the 72-hole Kings Links Golf Centre North-east District Open in ideal conditions at Aboyne Golf Club today.
Rudd, 18, pictured, the current Edinburgh and East of Scotland Alliance handicap champion, shot a two-under-par 66, three under the CSS, to take a one-shot lead from Banchory's Dominic Bradburn and former Cruden Bay player Stephen Roger, now a member of Peebles Golf Club.
Scottish amateur champion Euan McIntosh (Turnhouse) is on the 69 mark on a day of low scoring in ideal, warm conditions.
There will be a cut at the end of the second to provide the field for Sunday's 36-hole climax to the prestigious tournament.
