GOLF UNION PRESS RELEASE
The Renfrewshire boys' match-play championship was
played at Kilmacolm Golf Club on Sunday, August 5 when the family,
with a long standing connection with the club, presented the Freedman Trophy in
1979, the trophy having been originally brought from Canada.
The Renfrewshire Golf Union thanks them for
their continued support of the event.
The weather on
the day once again this year was good for play with moderate winds and for once
no sign of rain.
The semi-finals
were played in the morning with the results as follows:-
Cameron Percy (Caldwell) bt John Jack jun (Gourock) at 19th
Roddy McAuley (Fereneze) bt Aaron McCue (Greenock Whinhill) 2 and 1.
In the first
semi-final this was an up and down game with first one player taking the lead
and then the other. Coming down the back 9 Jack was 2 up but lost 3 holes in a
row, but recovered to be all square on 18, which was halved after he holed a
great single putt for a 4. The game however was over at the 19th when Percy
drove the green and 2 putts for a birdie sealed the victory.
In the other
semi-final Aaron McCue found himself 4 down after 7 with some poor golf,
despite winning the first with a birdie.
However he fought back and by the 11th was only 1 down. He lost the 13th and with the remaining holes halved in par lost 2/1.
However he fought back and by the 11th was only 1 down. He lost the 13th and with the remaining holes halved in par lost 2/1.
In the final,
both players started steadily and holes were exchanged early on, but some poor
play by McAuley saw him 4 down after 8. However always a fighter he won the
next 2 hole to reduce the deficit to 2 holes but despite his best efforts the
next 4 holes were halved in par before he made bogey on 16 to lose the final by
3/2.
A fine victory
for Cameron Percy, joining an elite group of Renfrewshire boys who have
retained the title, with some well known names among these.
Interestingly
Cameron never actually made the qualifying for the match-play, but due to the
non availability of another boy, was given a place as first reserve, and he made
the most of his good fortune!
The game was
played in the best of spirits as you would expect from RGU Boys just a pity in
such a great game that someone had to lose.
Both boys are
available for the RGU in future events and have been selected as part of the
RGU Boys team to face Stirlingshire on the 19th of August.
