Caitlin Whitehead helps Europe to a clean




sweep in Asia-Pacific junior championships 

England’s Caitlin Whitehead has helped Europe to an outstanding clean sweep in the Asia Pacific Junior Golf Championship in Hong Kong.
The 15-year-old from Cumbria paired up with Finland’s Sakke Siltala to power to an eight-shot victory in the team event at spectacular Clearwater Bay.

Whitehead, a girl international, also won the girls’ prize for the best individual score in round one in which she shot a six-under 64. Her partner, Siltala, won the boys’ prize with his opening 69.

That start gave then a seven-shot lead and set up their victory. In the second day’s foursomes they were one-under in tricky conditions and extended their lead to eight. In the final, better-ball round Siltala had an astonishing nine birdies as they played to a closing 61 and an eight-shot win over South Korea 1.
This is the fourth year of the championship and the two European teams took on the best junior players from across the Asia Pacific region.
Whitehead (Carus Green) and the three other Europeans were selected from their finishing positions in the European Young Masters. Whitehead won the girls' competition while Siltala took the boys’ silver medal after losing out in a play-off.
In the second team, Northern Ireland’s Beth Coulter joined Germany’s Luc Breuer. Breuer shot the low round of the European Young Masters and took the bronze medal while Coulter was fourth in the girls’ section. They finished 12th in Hong Kong.
The teams were captained by Jenny Henderson, the England Golf Women’s Performance Manager. Whitehead is a member of the England Golf girls’ squad.
