Where have all the young golfers gone?
Long time passing

FROM ALEX McKAY
Junior convener for Angus
County Golf Association
Reference scheduled Angus versus North-east U14, U16 and U18 boys' match at Monifieth.
Unfortunately I received an email from George Young (NE District SGU secretary. a few weeks ago asking for the match to be cancelled as the North-east could not raise a team for the event.
Last week I also received an email from Peter Abbott letting me know that the North area could not raise a team either for our annual fixture, resulting in another cancellation. I had trouble getting boys for my team as well but I was prepared to bring very young inexperienced boys to give them a taste of inter-county golf.
The problem for every area seems to be a lack of talented youngsters coming through. Golf is a priority sport for very few kids nowadays. In 12 years as Angus junior convener I have witnessed the numbers just get less and less.
Back in the "old days," loads of kids would be at the golf course all day every day during the summer holidays but now they are nowhere to be seen.
I would like for you (Colin Farquharson) to highlight this issue, put it out there  and see if we get any reactions, answers or ideas.
