WALDRON GOES ONE BETTER IN North-East U18s STROKE-PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP
By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Liam Waldron (Royal Aberdeen), beaten finalist in the Scottish U18 boys' championship at Lossiemouth last week, won the Paul Lawrie North-east U18 boys stroke-play title in a tight finish at Kemnay Golf Club today (Thursday).
Scratch player Waldron had rounds of 73 and 76 for a total of seven-over-par 149, one ahead of Owen Walker (Newmachar) who had a double bogey 7 at the 15th in his second-round 76 after a 74 in the opening round. Consolation for Walker in that he won the Under-16s trophy, although it has not been returned yet by last year's winner so there was no presentation to him today
Lewis Watt (Murcar Links) finished a close-up third on 151 (77-74)
Defending champion Cameron Black (Royal Aberdeen) was disqualified for failing to follow the correct procedure when he played a wrong ball during his first round.
Finlay Smith (McDonald Ellon), 17, had his first hole in one with a No 3 iron at the 14th hole (206yd) in a first-round 76. He was partnered by Ethan Main (Murcar Links) and Ryan Lovie (Duff House Royal).
