Sara Byrne (Douglas) and Louise Coffey (Malone) will go head to head for the 2018 Irish Women’s Close Championship this afternoon.

Byrne, 17, playing in her first National Championship semi-final this morning, birdied the first hole against fellow Munster woman Sarah Cunningham (Ennis). By the 9th, Cunningham had gone one ahead but determined not to let her opportunity slip, Byrne turned the match around again and sealed her place in the final on the 17th green.

The second semi-final between Louise Coffey (Malone) and Meadhbh Doyle (Portarlington) got off to a shaky start for Laois native but the match remained all square by the 7th hole. Coffey, who was beaten finalist to Olivia Mehaffey in this Championship in 2016, went ahead at the turn however and a birdie on the 11th gave her a 3 hole advantage.
Despite a valiant fightback on the closing holes, with birdies on 13 and 15 for Doyle, experience stood Coffey in good stead and she birdied the 16th, finally closing out the match 2 and 1.
RESULTS
Semi-finals
Sara Byrne (Douglas) bt Maeve Cunningham (Lurgan) 2 and 1.
Louise Coffey (Malone) bt Meadhbh Doyle (Port Arlington) 2 and 1.
