'Moving Morning’ at Moray whets the appetite for final round

TUESDAY MORNING REPORT FROM STEW FOWLIE AT LOSSIEMOUTH
The men’s field at the 96th Scottish Student Golf Championships provided plenty of twists and turns as the field shuffled ahead of an intriguing final round.
In cold, windy and wet conditions over Moray Old Course at Lossiemough, overnight leader Andrew Benson couldn’t quite match yesterday’s brilliance but plugged away well after a double bogey at the fourth to card a four-over-par round of 75, leaving him on a total of -1.
Despite the very testing conditions three players managed to post impressive 68s (-3) to enhance their prospects ahead of Round 4.
St Andrews University player Peter Kerr moved into fifth place, thanks to birdies at the 1st, 2nd, 15th and 18th holes. Robert Foley (Stirling) showed excellent form to reach his total despite a bogey 5 at the last and moved into second place with eighteen holes to play.
Meanwhile, playing partner and team-mate Laird Shepherd moved to the top of the leaderboard, thanks to his very assured round. Eight pars and a birdie on the outward nine were complemented by a further six pars coming in, seasoned with birdies at the 10th and 13th to put Shepherd to within touching distance of retaining the title he won in 2017.
Hazel MacGarvie began the third round of the women’s competition in a commanding position after fine rounds of 73 and 67 and she took little time to stretch her legs as she carded five birdies in six holes from the (New Course) third.
She briefly reached a tournament total of -12 with another birdie at the 12th, before experiencing a rare blip that led to a quadruple bogey 9 at the 14th. However, Hazel recovered well to par in for a one-under round of 70 and a 54-hole total of -7.
Sitting in joint second after the third round are St Andrews’ Lieve Van Veggel and Jasmine Mackintosh from North East Scotland College. Mackintosh made a bright start to her round with early birdies at the second, third and fourth holes  but progress was halted with a double-bogey at the 5th
A bogey at the ninth was not enough to dampen her spirits, however, and a birdie at 13 helped her home for a round of 70 (-1) and a 54-hole total of level par.
Van Veggel posted the best ladies' round of the morning – a two-under-par 69, which included birdies at the 1st, 6th, 12th, 13th and 14th holes.
With difficult conditions and all play (men and women) on the Old Course this afternoon, the outcome of both championships remains very much up for grabs.

You can keep an eye on the live scoring throughout the afternoon ahead of close of play, which is expected to be at around 7pm tonight
