FROM WALTER BURNS
Scottish Junior Golf Tour
Here are the results from the Scottish Junior Golf Tour Fun Family Xmas event at Dalmahoy on the West course. Once again we were lucky. The weather was okay apart from a strong wind.
It was a better-ball team competition in addition to the individual competition which was 9:9ParGolf where only the best nine holes count.
Despite the strong wind the scoring was excellent. Jack Lockhart had the best score of the day with seven-under-par 27, closely followed by John Jack jun with 28.

Two South Korean men drown in Thailand golf buggy accident

Golf cartsTwo golf buggies were involved (picture by courtesy of Getty Images)
The next time you are driving a golf buggy in the vicinity of a river or an expanse of water, take care … it could cost you our life.
Thai police have recovered the bodies of two South Korean men who drowned on Christmas Day after a golf buggy accident.
The men were driving in separate buggies with their wives when the vehicles collided at a pier along the Nan river.
One man drowned after falling into the water with his wife - the second died after jumping in to save them.
Their caddie also fell into the river but was rescued by a local fisherman.
Police say the couples were staying at the Si Phirom resort in central Thailand and had attempted to return to the clubhouse across the river after finishing a golf game
The resort uses a floating platform with slings and a pulley to assist with the crossing, according to local press.
"Their wives said both were able to swim but I think the cause of drowning was the strong undercurrent," a police spokesperson told AFP.
The bodies of both men - Jaseoong Ha, 76, and Jun Yong Sung, 68 - have been recovered by police.
This story was corrected on 28/12/2018to reflect that both men were driving in separate golf caddies with their wives when the incident took place.

TRUSLOW IS THE FIRST IN CLASS AT ASIAN TOUR QUALIFYING SCHOOL

Hua Hin, Thailand, December 30: Austen Truslow of the United States topped the class when he signed off his marathon week with a closing six-under-par 65 to secure his Tour card at the Asian Tour Qualifying School Final Stage today.
Truslow was also the leading player to progress from the first stage last week and impressed many with his one-hand dexterity at chipping as he wrapped up his week with a five-day total of 24-under-par 331.
Thailand’s Gunn Charoenkul also completed an unforgettable week at the Lakeview Resort and Golf Club as he carded the lowest score of the day with a 61 to finish in second place.
India’s Aadil Bebi, who was the youngest player to tee up in the Final Stage, showed his mental toughness by posting a 63 to end the week tied for ninth.
Despite learning about the loss of a close friend who was involved in a fatal traffic accident at the start of the week, the 17-year-old displayed maturity beyond his years by staying focused to earn his playing rights for the 2019 Asian Tour season.
Thailand’s Sadom Kaewkanjana and China’s Jin Cheng will give up their amateur status after emerging within the top-35 and ties players to earn their Tour cards after five rounds.
Under the influence of his father, Austen Truslow got interested in golf when he was four and he lives in Florida.
Earlier in the week, Truslow carded his first ace during the second round. His hole-in-one was the first he has made in his professional career and it came courtesy of his six-iron from 196 yards on the 16th hol
Aadil Bedi started practising and learning the initial strokes of golf when he was just four years old.
Throughout his 13-year amateur career, Bedi has won 171 medals and trophies. He has also represented India in all the elite and major amateur tournaments of the world including Asian games, British Amateur, Australian Masters of Amateur, Singapore Amateur and the Eisenhower Cup played in Ireland.
Bedi represented India as an amateur at the 2018 Asian Games. He led the field for the first three days but eventually missed out on a podium finish on the final day, finishing in 13th place.
He got an invitation to play at the Asian Development Tour (ADT) season-ender last month where he finished tied-12th at the PGM Maybank ADT Championship.
Bedi’s best result as a professional came at the Bengaluru Open on the PGTI where he finished third a fortnight ago.

Players’ Quotes

Austen Truslow (USA) – Fifth round 65 (-6), total 331 (-24)
I’m not going to cry. For the past four years, I haven’t got on Tour before. My goal when I was 18 was to get on Tour by age 22 and the Asian Tour Qualifying School was the last time to do it.
It’s been a good week. I finally have a place to play full time.
I felt that my game is good enough once I get out there, but I haven’t done well in qualifying. Now that I have a card, I can loosen and show my consistency.
I started chipping with one hand over a year ago. I didn’t chip great this week, but it was still a lot better than chipping with two hands.
I don’t chip with one hand every single time, but 80 per cent of the time I do. I didn’t go out with the goal of winning the tournament  win today. I just wanted a good round as it’ll give me my status on Tour. I finished well

Rory McIlroy to begin 2019 at Sentry Tournament of Champions in Hawaii

Rory McIlroy tees off from the 1st at the 2018 Irish Open

FROM BBC SPORTS NEWS
Rory McIlroy will make his debut at the Sentry Tournament of Champions next week at the start of a year in which he will focus more on the US PGA Tour.
The 29-year-old has qualified for the event - made up exclusively of US PGA Tour winners - on six previous occasions, but has never taken part.
The Northern Irishman plans to reduce his European Tour commitments in an effort to add to his four major titles.
England's Justin Rose will not feature at the Kapalua Resort in Hawaii.
World number one Brooks Koepka and 2013 winner Dustin Johnson will headline the event, while Englishman Paul Casey will make his first appearance in the tournament since 2010.
European Golfer of the Year Francesco Molinari will also feature in the 34-strong field but Tiger Woods, who qualified with his victory at the Tour Championship in September, will not compete.
In recent seasons, McIlroy has begun his playing year during the European Tour's series of tournaments in the Middle East, but he announced in November that he would be focusing on the PGA Tour until the end of August in an effort to regain his best form.
The former world number one has thus far committed to only two European Tour events for 2019 but he must play four outside the majors and World Golf Championship competitions to retain his Tour membership.

I have expressed my concern about the availability of live golf (and sports in general) on TV many times. More and more it seems, young adults are addicted to (gaming) sites on such as YouTube, which is a completely different (sporting) scenario.
It is always better to be an active player than an observer.
Watch out folks, it could be the early beginnings of the end of professional sports as we know them (at least the ones that depend on TV revenue for their existence)
The Tiger-Mickelson $9-million Match (which has been, horror of horrors, extended for three more years) is not a good omen for 'proper' tournament golf in the medium range future😡
