Brilliant Clements beats Gaunt 2 and 1 in  English amateur 36-hole final

FROM THE ENGLAND GOLF
WEBSITE

Todd Clements played brilliant – and brave – golf to win the English Amateur Championship at The Berkshire  Golf Club today, beating Jack Gaunt 2 and 1 in the 36-hole final.

It’s his first win and he said: “What a way to start! It just proves to me that I can really compete at this level. Two years ago I was just someone who turned up to enjoy a tournament, now I feel I can turn up and try to win.”
The 20-year-old from Braintree, Essex, was thoroughly tested before he got his hands on the trophy and he had to produce remarkable golf to seal his win on The Berkshire’s spectacular Red course, with its carpets of heather and towering pines.
“There were a lot of highs and lows,” said Clements – and he meant it. This morning he dominated play over the second nine and came into lunch with a four-hole lead.
This afternoon he was quickly five up and appeared to be cruising to victory, but Gaunt, from Drayton Park, Staffordshire, had other ideas.
In the space of just six holes he had pulled the match back to all square, with a par on the 22nd, three consecutive birdies from the 23rd and another birdie on the 27th.
It was a stunning display as he played an eight-iron to within a foot on one hole and then rammed home a series of putts.
Clements confessed: “For those holes I was thinking I mustn’t embarrass myself!” But instead of wilting he produced his own amazing comeback.
It started on the 28th, a challenging par three, where he fired a brave shot straight at the pin. He was rewarded with a winning birdie and returned to one up.
He kept his lead on the 30th with a fighting par after he found a fairway bunker, played through the green, chipped back and holed the four-footer to match Gaunt.
Then the dramatics began. On the long 31st Clements chipped in for an eagle 3 to go two up. On the 32nd he holed a 30ft birdie putt to go three up. On the 33rd, with Gaunt already conceded a birdie 4, Clements holed another 30-footer for his own birdie and a crucial half.
“It’s all a bit of a blur,” said Clements later.
He lost the 34th where he missed the green while Gaunt putted superbly from the back of the green to set up his par three. Then, with Gaunt bunkered in two on the long 35th, a solid par was enough for the title. “It’s unbelievable,” said Clements.

Leading money-winner Forsyth pips Patterson

for Sandyhills pro-am victory

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
PGA in Scotland leading money-winner Alastair Forsyth (Mearns Castle Golf Academy) scored his sixth win of the season with a five-under-par round of 65 at today's (Sun) Sandyhills Golf Club, Glasgow pro-am.

Forsyth, pictured, had an eagle 3 at the first and birdies at the fourth, sixth, 11th and short 17th in halves of 32 (four under) and 33 (one under). His only bogey came at the 14th.
He won the £1,317 prize, boosting his season's earnings to £12,237, by one stroke from Michael Patterson (Kilmacolm) who also had an eagle (a 2 at par-4 11th) and four birdies but also two bogeys, at the 12th and 16th, in halves of 35 and 31. He earned £1,054.
Graham Fox (Clydeway Golf), who finished joint third on 67 with Neil Fenwick (Dunbar), Gavin Hay (Grantown on Spey) and Chris Currie (Caldwell), boosted the £563 he received for that by leading the S Boyd 1 team to victory in the pro-am team event. His amateur partners were Steven Boyd (handicap 16), Chris Harvey (10) and Ian Wilson (8) and their best ball net score was 14-under-par 56.
Sam Binning and Davie Stein's teams also hit the 56 mark but lost out in a card countback.
Fox, Binning, Stein and the pros with the teams who finished fourth and fifth on 57, Greg Paxton and Keith Grant, all earned the same fee, £155 each.

Brilliant Broadhurst regains Scottish

Senior Open title

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Paul Broadhurst secured the Scottish Senior Open title for a second time with a three-stroke victory at Renaissance Club today.
The Englishman, who won this title on his European Senior Tour debut in 2015, carded rounds of 66-67-67 to finish three shots ahead of Australia’s Mike Harwood.
Winner of the Senior Open Championship Presented by Rolex at Carnoustie last year, this is Broadhurst’s third victory on Scottish soil in four events.
“I love links golf,” said Broadhurst. “I’ve had some serious practice in the wind over the last few weeks at The Open and Senior Open. I’ve mastered the knock-down shot and that was key this week.
“I hit some really close irons into strong winds; that was the key to the win. It’s great to win this event again; this trophy really means a lot to me”
Broadhurst birdied the first and third holes to open up a three-shot lead at the start of the day and then made the turn in 34, two under par. Two birdies on the back nine followed as he staved off challenges from Harwood, Magnus P Atlevi and Chris Williams.
“I played pretty solid,” said Broadhurst. “I had a perfect start with my birdie on the first and Magnus making bogey. That put me three shots ahead and that was a nice cushion; but it’s never enough, you always want to be five or six shots ahead.

“There were a couple of hairy moments around the turn when the rain came down, I was a bit concerned with how much was going to come down and how it would affect my game.
“But I held it together and had a good saving par on 14 which gave me some breathing space. It’s always nice walking up the last with a three-shot lead. It beats having one shot and then it play on your nerves. I enjoyed the way I played today.”
After starting the day on level par, Scotland’s Gary Orr, a rookie senior, set a course record with a spectacular eight under par 63, giving him a share of third place with Barry Lane and Williams.
“It was a shame I was a long way back,” said Orr. “If I had started nearer the lead, I could have posted a really strong total. I struggled the first day but played well in the last two rounds.
“I putted really well and knocked in a lot of nice putts and it was a nice way to finish with a birdie. I had my son on the bag and it has been great having him with me the last two weeks. He plays off ten but he’s a good putter and really helped me read the greens.”
Atlevi finished a shot further back on seven under par, with defending champion Paul Eales occupying seventh spot on six under.

Howard the winner after rain washes out
Finnish Challenge final round
EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Paul Howard won his first European Challenge Tour title after the fourth round of the Vierumäki Finnish Challenge was cancelled following heavy rain in Finland.
The Englishman went into the final day with a two-shot lead after rounds of 68-65-66, but after torrential rain flooded the course at Vierumäki Resort, the decision was taken to reduce the tournament to 54 holes.
The 26 year old, who was only able to complete seven holes today, was emotional after Tournament Director Gary Butler broke the news that he was the champion.
“I am speechless,” he said. “I was very nervous starting my round this morning and although I played well those nerves didn’t really lift and I had just three-putted six and seven in the rain before play was called off – so it’s fair to say that I’m ecstatic that it has been cancelled.
“I didn’t get over the nerves but felt that I was managing the situation. It was torrential out there and I am not surprised that it got cancelled.
“I went to work in a call centre as I didn’t have any money after last season so this is massive – hopefully I won’t have to go back there anytime soon.
“Last year I just missed out on having a full card whereas now I am going to get into every event, and I will afford to be able to go to all the events – so this is massive for me.
“I can’t put it into words other than to say I’m absolutely chuffed. I have a lot of really good friends out here and it was great that they were all with me when I heard the news that I had won – that feeling was probably better than holing out on the last.
“My parents are going to be made up, everyone back at my home course and everyone I know is going to be ecstatic.
“The goal this year was to win, as it was last year, and every other year before that. Although I won in a strange way, it is nice to know that I can put myself at the top of the leaderboard after three rounds.
“Everyone tells me that I am good enough to do it, and I can take a lot of confidence from this week. Hopefully I can go on and push for that top 15 spot now.”
With victory in Finland Howard moves up 77 spots on the Road to Oman to 20th place. Sweden’s Simon Forsström, who finished two behind Howard in second place, also made a big move up in the Rankings, rising up 55 places to sit in 33rd position.

Greg Owen leads Barracuda Championship

at Reno, Nevada
RENO, Nevada – Greg Owen of England had nine birdies on Saturday to take five-point, third-round lead in the Barracuda Championship.
Owen had eight birdies and three pars on 11 holes before a double bogey on 18 to finish a 14-point round in the modified Stableford scoring system that gave him 37 points going into Sunday’s final round.
Stuart Appleby and Derek Fathauer both had birdies on 18 to finish Round 3 tied for second with 32 points. Ricky Barnes had 15 points, including five consecutive birdies, to move up 14 spots into fourth place with 31 points.
Second-round leader Richy Werenski had three of his four bogeys on the back nine and fell into a tie for fifth with Tom Hoge, Ben Martin and Dicky Pride with 30 points apiece.

The tournament is the US PGA Tour’s only Stableford scoring event. The system awards eight points for a double eagle, five points for an eagle, two points for a birdie and deducts a point for a bogey and three points for a double bogey or worse.

Pieters and Johnson share lead

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Thomas Pieters will battle it out for a maiden World Golf Championship with two-time Major Champion Zach Johnson for company in the final group of the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, after the Belgian carded a third- round 66 to share the lead on nine-under 210 with the American.
The three time European Tour winner could become the first debutant to win the prestigious tournament since Tiger Woods clinched the inaugural edition in 1999, but will come up against the might of a 12-time winner on the US PGA Tour in Johnson as well as a chasing pack which includes four-time Major winner Rory McIlroy.
Pieters got off to a flying start at Firestone Country Club, Akron, Ohio, opening with three successive birdies followed by two more at the fifth and eighth.
The wheels began to come off somewhat with back-to-back bogeys at the 13th and 14th but two birdies in the last three helped him to a four-under round of 66 for 210
Johnson’s 65 was the second-best round of the day, only after that of Australian Scott Hend, who fired a scorching 63 – the best round of his European Tour career which included just 22 putts - to move into outright third position on eight-under-par 202.
McIlroy, meanwhile, carded a solid if unspectacular 68 in Akron after a chip-in for birdie at the 12th was followed by six successive pars but he will take plenty of comfort from the fact that he was also three shots off the pace heading into the final round here in 2014, before he went on to win.
Player quotes:
Thomas Pieters
“It was the same as the last two days – I struck the ball really well with the irons, my ball striking's been really good. Off the tee not so good, but I think I'm missing it in the spots I can miss it in. All in all, it’s not too bad. I haven't really made any long putts this week and it's nice to see that one on 18 go in.
When I do hit the fairway, I get really happy.  If I start hitting a lot of fairways I know I'm going to be shooting a lot of low scores.
I’m going to give it my all, like I have done all this year. It’s just not been enough, but hopefully tomorrow's going to be enough.
That's what you want at the beginning of the week, you just want to be in contention on Sunday afternoon
Zach Johnson
“It was good today. I gave myself a lot of great opportunities. I think I missed a couple fairways. I hit a lot of greens in regulation, so it was just a solid day all around. I drove it well and I putted well. I felt like I left some out there but at the same time I know I made a few, too.
“I don't know how many top tens I've had here but it's probably been a handful. I feel like I can compete here, that goes without saying. Still 18 holes left, still got to keep the pedal down.”
Scott Hend
“I holed some putts today. I've been scrambling well all week, and I managed to hit a few more fairways and actually holed some putts, so that was the big difference.
“This golf course can jump up and bite you pretty quick, and we don't know what the conditions are going to be like tomorrow anyway. I'm just happy to be where I am right now and we'll take stock tomorrow when we return to the golf course. I’ll just approach it the way we do any other tournament.”
Rory McIlroy
It was okay. I felt like I could have got a lot more out of it. I think if I would have walked off today with a 65 or a 66, I would have felt that was a fair reflection of how I played. I left a few out there, but I’m only three behind going into tomorrow and I can get off to a fast start and try and put a bit of pressure on the guys up ahead of me.
“I'm hitting the driver really well. When you're confident with it and you can go at it 100 percent, it feels good. It brings me back to three years ago when I was doing the same thing here (chasing from three shots back).  Hopefully that continues and I can keep it up, not just through tomorrow, but obviously into next week as well."
