BENN McLEOD'S SUNDAY BEST WINS

HIM S E DISTRICT OPEN BY 2 SHOTS

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Benn McLeod, 30-year-old Gullane greenkeeper, used all his local knowledge to win the South-east District Open amateur golf championship over his home Musselburgh Golf Club course today (Sunday).
He produced his Sunday best - a pair of 69s - to overhaul halfway leader 19-year-old Keiran Cantley (Liberton) with a 10-under-par total of 274
McLeod, who plays cackhanded, i.e. left hand below the right on the grip, playing right handed, held off a last-round bid by Cantley, recent winner of the North of Scotland Open at Royal Dornoch, to pull the fat from the fire.
Cantley's four-under-par 67, the best last-round score, came up two shots short of dislodging McLeod from the pole position.
Stuart McLaren (Bruntsfield Links), winner of the North-east District Open a couple of weeks ago at Newmachar, finished a distant fourth on 282 after a disappointing fourth round of 74.
Defending champion Euan McIntosh (Turnhouse) looked as if he might figure in the closing stages when he shot a third-round 67 but he could do no better than a closing 72 for 283 and a share of fourth place with Calum Fyfe (Cawder).
