South Africa’s Casey Jarvis pulled off a wire-to-wire win in the Reid Trophy at Manchester Golf Club, finishing on four-under par.

The 14-year-old signed off with an 18th-hole birdie and a final round of two-over 74. It gave him a two-shot victory over Spain’s Jose Ballester in the English U14 boys’ open championship.

“It feels pretty good, I’m very happy,” said Jarvis, who was fifth in last year’s Reid Trophy.

The leading English player was Rory McDonald-O’Brien, (Lilleshall Hall, Shropshire) who also scored 74 today and finished tied fourth on two-over.

He comfortably achieved his aim of a top ten finish and said: “It’s been a really good week and I’ve played some good golf.”

He felt some pressure on the first tee today, under the gaze of the spectators, and the adrenalin quickly kicked in. “I hit a nine-iron straight over the back of the green,” he said. “I chipped on and holed a 20-footer for a bogey, but then I made pars to steady the ship.”

He played very tidily with three pars and a birdie on the 10th in the gusting wind.

Jarvis started the final round with a four shot lead, but had some struggles with his swing. “I didn’t play my best today,” he said. “I hit a lot of drives left in the long stuff but I recovered well.”

Meanwhile, Ballester was mounting a charge, playing round in four-under 68. He had five birdies on the front nine, reaching the turn in three-under and was one-under on the way home, helped by a birdie, eagle sequence on 13 and 14.

He got to within one of Jarvis, but the gap widened again when the South African rolled in a 10-footer for birdie on the last.

He describes this as “probably my biggest win. It means a lot to me for the future, I’m very happy.”

Now, both Jarvis and McDonald-O’Brien will head to the Scottish U14s.
