Gary Woodland is enjoying his return to Mexico. In fact, he probably wishes he’d played at Mayakoba more than once in his career. In his first time at Mayakoba since his rookie year in 2009, Woodland
takes a one-shot lead into the weekend at the OHL Classic at Mayakoba. Woodland posted a 6-under 65 to get to 13 under and lead by one over Webb Simpson. Scott Piercy is two back at 11 under. “I feel good. I played well today,” Woodland said. “I made a lot of
putts yesterday, which was nice to see. Today I really hit the ball
really well, saw some putts go in at the end, so I’m excited about the
weekend.” Woodland has long been known for his ability to drive the golf ball,
but this week he has dialed it back on the driver and hit more three
woods to keep it in the fairway on a tight Mayakoba track. It has paid off for him too. Woodland has hit 75 percent of fairways through 36 holes. “The golf course is in great shape. It sets up good for me,” Woodland
said. “I can hit a lot of irons off the tees, lay back a little bit.
The whole deal is to keep the ball in the fairway and then attack from
there.” Russell Knox is one of seven players four shots back at 9 under in joint fourth.
