Laird and Gemma win titles at 6th Stirling 

International Students' Tournament

Stirling students Laird Shepherd and Gemma Batty won the individual titles at the 6th Stirling International students' golf tournament over 54 holes of The Duke's Course, St Andrews today.

Moffat-based Batty, pictured right, English-born but hoping to qualify to play for Scotland in a year or two,  shot a final round 78 for a 225 aggregate to secure victory in the women's event for the second year in a row, this time by three strokes from Chloe Goadby (Stirling) and Alexa Hammer (St Andrews). 

Chloe, on her 19th birthday, had the best round of the day, a 73, to take second place on 228 fter a birdie on the last.  Alexa’s 77 also saw her finish on 228 but was placed third with the higher third-round score.

In the men’s competition, James Glenn (Durham University) shot a superb level par 70 for a 220 total to climb the field and finish in the runner up position. However, the winner of the competition came from the final grouping as Laird Shepherd (Stirling University), pictured left, held his nerve (including escaping with a bogey on 17 by chipping in) to shoot a 76 and win by one shot with a six-over-par aggregate of 219. 

Banchory's Sam Locke (Scottish Golf) rounded out the top three with a second consecutive 75 to finish on eight over par 221.

Andrew Davidson (Stirling) had a 70, the best score of the day, to finish tied eighth on 223.
