Ryder Cup Day 1 setback for Europeans

USA lead 4-0 after opening foursomes

CHASKA, Minnesota. – U.S. Captain Davis Love had his four-balls afternoon pairings pretty much nailed down as he stood off the par-3 seventh tee after watching Zach Johnson and Jimmy Walker in their match against Sergio Garcia and Martin Kaymer.
At the time, Love wanted to make sure that the four who sat out in the morning would play in the afternoon, but the quandary was to find out who would sit out of the eight who competed in the morning.
The dilemma became more acute as the U.S. swept all four matches in the morning, the first time the team has gone 4-0 in a Ryder Cup session since 1981.
“We want those four guys that are sitting back there to play, so that they want to watch and see how everybody’s doing well if everybody’s playing great what do you do?” Love said. “I said in the press room it’s hard to sit guys out, it’s easy to put out good pairings, but it’s hard to figure out who will sit out.”
Love was true to his word with his afternoon four-balls pairings:
Match 5: Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed vs. Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson
Match 6: J.B Holmes and Ryan Moore vs. Sergio Garcia and Rafa Cabrera-Bello
Match 7: Brandt Snedeker and Brooks Koepka vs. Martin Kaymer and Danny Willett
Match 8: Dustin Johnson and Matt Kuchar vs. Rory McIlroy and Thomas Pieters
Paul Azinger, the 2008 U.S. Ryder Cup captain – and the last one to bring a U.S. victory – agrees that Love needs to get the four players that did not play in the first session into the fray as quickly as possible.
“My philosophy was to play everybody the first day,” Azinger said. “Give them a taste of it and then determine if we needed to leave ot somebody the second day. But I felt like you earned your right to be here and you deserved an opportunity to play in this great event. I played everybody the first match, actually I didn’t even change my pairings, really, the second day… because they played so well the first day I did the same thing the second day.”
Love kept Spieth and Reed together from the morning foursomes after their 3 and 2 win over Rose and Stenson.
Johnson and Kuchar are also together again after a 5-and-4 victory over Lee Westwood and Pieters.
European captain Darren Clarke has decided to go a different way, sitting both U.S. Amateur champion Mathew Fitzpatrick and Chris Wood for the entire first day, the first time that has happened for the Europeans since 2008 when captain Nick Faldo sat Oliver Wilson until the second day.
Only the afternoon pairing of Rose and Stenson had played together in the morning, as Clarke switched up his line-up from the morning debacle.

By JOHN HENRY
Our event at Haggs Castle Golf Club today turned out better than what the forecast was suggesting! Heavy winds but only a few showers kept it playable out there today and considering the rain we have had past couple of weeks the course held up well

Three of our players just finished competing yesterday in the Highland Links pro am up in Inverness and they either drove down to Glasgow last night or early this morning - Chris Kelly , Paul Robinson and  Michael Patterson. Great effort, lads!!
European Tour player Jamie McLeary and Mearns Castle pro Mark Loftus shared first prize on two-under 70, a great score in the windy conditions
Massive thanks to Haggs Castle GC and all the staff for hosting us, our sponsors Devel Golf , Golf Marker Systems , The Paul Lawrie Foundation and  Bridge Golf, Scotland

Grant Forrest joins pro ranks ahead of Alfred Dunhill Links debut

NEWS RELEASE Grant Forrest has turned professional with immediate effect and will make his debut in the paid ranks on home soil in next week's Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

The 23-year-old, pictured, has secured an invitation for the $5 million European Tour Pro-Am event at
Carnoustie, Kingsbarns and St Andrews, joining recent pro recruit and Bounce Sport stablemate
Ewen Ferguson in the star-studded line-up.
Forrest is making the switch to professional golf on the back of a stellar amateur career, having
racked up a string of impressive victories over the past seven years.
“I've thoroughly enjoyed my time playing amateur golf and will forever be grateful to both Scottish
Golf and The R&A for the experiences and opportunities I've had over the years,” said Forrest.
"However, I feel now is the right time to be setting out on the next chapter of my career and it is
fantastic to get the chance to make my professional debut on home soil in the Alfred Dunhill Links
Championship.”
Forrest gave a glimpse of his potential when winning the Scottish Boys Under-16 Championship in
2009, before backing that up a year later by claiming the Scottish Boys Championship. The Craigielaw
player then landed a third national title by winning the Scottish Amateur Championship at Royal
Dornoch in 2012.
He qualified for the Open Championship at Muirfield in 2013, before in 2014 he won the St Andrews
Links Trophy and played his part in team successes, winning the Palmer Cup (Europe) and St
Andrews Trophy (GB&I).
The following year he reached the final of The Amateur Championship at Carnoustie, a performance
that helped secure his place on the GB&I Walker Cup team that achieved a record victory over the
US at Royal Lytham. During his four years at the University of San Diego, Forrest won four times,
including the Redhawk Invitational at 2015 US Open venue Chambers Bay.
Forrest was also in the Scotland side that achieved back-to-back European Amateur Team titles in
2015 and 2016, with his swansong in the amateur ranks coming as part of the three-man Scotland
team that competed for the Eisenhower Trophy in Mexico last week.
"I have good memories from playing at both Carnoustie and St Andrews and it’s really exciting to
know that I will be competing against major winners and Ryder Cup players in my first event as a
professional,” added Forrest, ahead of his pro debut next Thursday.
Along with Ferguson, Forrest joined the Bounce Sport stable earlier this year and has already
benefitted from playing in some Challenge Tour events as an amateur thanks to the Edinburghbased company’s tie up with Scottish Golf to help ease the am-to-pro transition.
“I would like to thank the Dunhill Links Championship Committee for inviting both Grant and Ewen
to play in this year's tournament,” said Bounce Sport founding partner Iain Stoddart. “We
understand how many requests they receive and how difficult it is to choose who will play.
“It is a privilege to be working with Grant as he embarks on his professional career and, given his
fantastic achievements to date, we see only exciting and successful times ahead.”
Steve Paulding, Scottish Golf Performance Director, added: “Grant has done everything possible to
prepare for the challenges ahead. He has his US college degree, played in two World Amateur Team
Championships, the Walker Cup and two winning European teams. He has played in a number of
professional events and the time is right for him to make the move into the professional game.
“I would personally like to thank him for all he has done for Scottish Golf and wish him good luck for
this next stage in his career. He knows we are there to help him ongoing with our coaching and
sportscotland institute support staff.”

SCOTS END LOSING SEQUENCE WITH

WIN OVER WALES AT ALYTH

Scotland scored their first win for at least two years in the Senior Ladies Home Internationals at Alyth Golf Club, Perthshire today, beating Wales 5-3 in their first match after losing all three 12 months ago.
A wet and miserable started to the day changed to bright and very breezy conditions before lunchtime.
The Scots took a 2-1 edge from the morning foursomes and added three more points with wins by Gillian Kyle (2 and 1 over Denise Richards), Lesley Lloyd (2 and 1 against Olwen Davies) and Fiona De Vries (2 and 1 against Sharon Roberts).
Wales' two winners in the singles were Jane Rees, who beat Aberdeen's Sheena Wood 3 and 2 In the lead-off tie, and former Senior British champion Ann Lewis, a 3 and 2 winner over Lorna McKinlay.
All square at the turn, Rees went two up on Wood by winning the 10th and 13th. The Scot won the 14th to be only one down but Rees took the 15th and 16th for the match.
Kyle was one up at the turn against Richards and went up at the 12th. Richards rallied to win the 13th to be only one down but halves at the 14th and 15th gave Kyle some breathing space and the Scot won the 16th and halved the 17th for a 2 and 1 win, her second of the day.
McKinlay was two up after nine against Lewis but the Welsh player went to town on the inward half, winning the 11th and 12th to square the contest and then taking the 13th, 14th and 16th for a 3 and 2 victory.
Lloyd won the sixth, 10th and 12th for a two-hole lead over Davies. The Scot then won the 14th to be three up. Davies won the 15th to be two down with three to play but she ran out of holes as Lloyd won on the 17th green.
Roberts won the ninth and 10th to square her match against De Vries. The next three holes were halved before De Vries edged ahead again by winning the 14th.
The 15th was halved. Then De Vries won the 16th to be dormie and she won by 2 and 1 to clinch Scotland's 5-3 victory.
European senior champions Ireland came a cropper in their bid to take the home title out of England's grasp.  England won 5.5-2.5, taking the foursomes by a 2pt margin and the singles 3-1.

England's singles winners were Julie Brown (by 4 and 3 against Mary Sheehy), Katherine Russell (by 2 and 1 over Maria O'Reilly) and Jackie Foster (by 5 and 4 against Irish senior champion Gertie McMullen).

at Nairn Golf Club.

Highland Links pro-am over three courses

Chris Lloyd and Graham Fox (Clydeway Golf) had the lowest scores of the day - 64 apiece - in the first round of the £46,600 Highland Links pro-am over three courses: Royal Dornoch, Nairn and Castle Stuart.
With Royal Dornoch a par 70, Nairn a par 71, and Castle Stuart a 72, it will be Thursday before the pieces of the Tartan Tour's golfing jigsaw come together and tell us the winners when they have all played the three classic links courses.
Chris Lloyd had his 64 at Castle Stuart which puts him a eight under par.
Graham Fox had his 64 at Nairn - a seven-under-par score.
Nice to see Blairgowrie's Bradley Neil well up the leaderboad with a 66 at Castle Stuart, a six-under-par score. Bradley must have boosted his confidence by winning a European Tour Qualifying School Stage 1 event in Austria last week.

Curtis Cup player Alice Hewson sets Clemson

scoring record in Schooner Fall Classic

FROM THE CLEMSON TIGERS WEBSITE
Clemson, South Carolina — English second-year student Alice Hewson set a Clemson University scoring record for 54 holes with rounds of 66, 70 and 67  over the par-71 course and led Clemson to a third-place team finish at the Schooner Fall Classic at the weekend.
The two-day tournament concluded on Sunday afternoon at the par 71 Belmar Country Club in Norman, Oklahome.  It was the first tournament for new Clemson coach Kelley Hester.
GB and I Curtis Cup player Hewson from Berkhamsted, England shot a four-under-par 67 on Sunday to finish with a 54-hole score of 203, 10-under-par.
Her performance broke the Clemson record for total score and score vs. par that had been established by Ashlan Ramsey at the 2013 Ruth’s Chris Intercollegiate in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.  Ramsey had shot a nine under par 207 at that event on a par 72 course to set the marks for total score and score versus par.
Hewson, a sophomore student, finished second to  Morgane Metraux of Florida State, who finished with a 12-under-par score of 201.  Hewson had scores of 66-70-67.
Alice's 66 in the first round was the second best 18-hole score in Clemson University women's golf history.  The only score better is her 65 last year at the Cougar Classic in Charleston.
"The course played like a totally different layout today with different winds," said Hester.   "The girls adjusted well. We beat some good team and we are off to a great start.  Alice Hewson was very solid and played well down the stretch.  She gave herself a chance to win."
Florida State won the team competition with an 829 score, 23-under-par.  Alabama, ranked No. 1 in the nation by Golfweek, finished second at 841.  Clemson was third at  849, three shots ahead of host school Oklahoma.  Kent State, ranked fourth in the nation by Golfweek, finished fifth at 858.
Clemson had a team score of one-under-par 283 on Sunday.
