SPRINGFIELD, New Jersey — There were two players knotted at 9 under atop
the leaderboard, but truly, everyone was focused at two scores tied at 2
over.
Phil Mickelson and Rory McIlroy were in the same pairing, sitting on
the same score, and sharing the similar need: Par their final hole, the
par-5 18th, and pray that 2 over made the cut, or, better yet, make
birdie and breathe easier at 1 over. The veteran left-hander did the latter, his two-putt birdie giving
him a level-par 70 to make his 21st consecutive cut in the US PGA
Championship. McIlroy? Hard to believe but he made bogey and at 3 over has missed a
major cut for the second time in a season for the first time since
2010. It’s also the first time in eight starts that he’s missed the cut
in the US PGA. While those boys in Group 36 dominated the late-day cut story at the
98th PGA Championship, there was other noteworthy news regarding the
cut:
It means that 14 players made the cut in all four majors this
season: Rafa Cabrera-Bello, Jason Day, Harris English, Bill Haas, Martin
Kaymer, Kevin Kisner, Kevin Na, Adam Scott, Jordan Spieth, Justin
Thomas, Bubba Watson, Lee Westwood and Danny Willett.
Most importantly was the fact that Day propelled himself into the
thick of things. But with a torrid 65 to get to 7 under, the Aussie
assured of himself of a made cut in 16 straight majors. That’s best on
the US PGA Tour. Westwood (69-70) has now made nine in a row, Spieth
(70-67) eight.
Sergio Garcia (71-74) saw his consecutive streak come to a halt at 10.
Steve Stricker continues to amaze. At 49, he backed up an opening 69
with a 70 to run to 22 his streak of making cuts in the majors. Now,
they haven’t come consecutively, as Stricker has skipped or not been
eligible for six majors in recent years, but give him his due. He hasn’t
missed a cut since the 2009 PGA at Hazeltine.
Ernie Els birdied the par-5 17th to shoot 69 and make the cut on the
number. Like Robert Streb, who is tied for the lead, Els had missed the
cut in each of the season’s first three majors. The dubious distinction
of missing the cut in each major this season belongs to Chris Kirk
(75-69).
None of the 20 club professionals made the cut.
Haas has now made the cut in six straight PGAs.
Charley Hoffman has missed the cut in seven of his eight PGAs, making it only in 2013.
Francesco Molinari (71-70) maintained perfect attendance at the PGA,
eight starts, eight cuts made. Meanwhile, Brooks Koepka and Hideki
Matsuyama are now 4-for-4 in their PGA Championship appearances.
Other notables to miss the cut included Dustin Johnson, Matt Kuchar, Gary Woodland, Shane Lowry, Luke Donald and Graeme McDowell.
