Matthew Dalrymple wins West of Scotland
boys' title after classic final
Matthew
Dalrymple of Old Ranfurly Golf Club is the 2016 West of Scotland boys' match-play champion.
In an excellent final at Mount Ellen Golf Club, Matthew, pictured, defeated Jack McMorris of East Kilbride
by 2 and 1. However the score fails to reveal the true excitement of this match and
the final drama. Matthew started on fire with four birdies in the first six
holes to be five up and coasting. However Jack rallied with three birdies of
his own and stood on the 14th tee only one down and game on.
Jack pushed his drive about forty yards short
and right of the green but left hander Matthew rose to the challenge and boomed
his drive on to the green to make an easy birdie. The hole measures 311
yards!
This put Matthew two up with four to play and they halved in to give
Matthew victory.
Dalrymple is
17 years old and is heading to King University in Bristol, Tennessee to embark on a four-year golf
scholarship.
Jack, also 17,
is having a gap year and hoping to follow a similar golf scholarship in America
next year. Both boys are playing next week in Scottish boys' stroke-play at
Lanark GC next week.
