Austin and Allan's better-ball 59 gives them lead in US Senior Tour pairs tournament

RIDGEDALE, Missouri-- Woody Austin and Michael Allen shot a 12-under 59 in better-ball play Saturday to take the second-round lead in the US PGA Tour Champions' Bass Pro Shops Legends of Golf at Big Cedar Lodge.
Austin and Allen played Buffalo Ridge's Springs Course after opening with a 5-under 49 on the par-3 Top of the Rock course.
"We played the absolute perfect team game today," Austin said. "We ham and egged it great. We were both in just about every hole. We hit it close to the hole a lot. It was a true perfect partnership day today. We were perfect today."
Austin won the Mitsubishi Electric Classic last week in a playoff in Georgia for his second victory in the last three events on the 50-and-over tour.
Defending champions Billy Andrade and Joe Durant were a stroke back at 16 under along with the teams of David Frost-Roger Chapman and Kenny Perry-Scott Hoch. Frost and Chapman had a 61 at the Springs, while Andrade-Durant and Perry-Hoch each shot 46 at Top of the Rock. At the par-3 course, the teams played nine holes of modified alternate shot and nine of better ball.
"We're in a great spot," Perry said. "We've got to make some putts. I need to make a few putts. I had some great opportunities and looks, and (Hoch) got me in there. I made a couple, but I missed more than I made. I need to kind of rotate around tomorrow and just make a couple more."
First-round leaders Bernhard Langer and Tom Lehman were 15 under after a 50 on the par-3 course.The final round will be played on the par-3 course.
"That alternate shot nine holes is going to be the key in the morning," Austin said. "You need to somehow figure out a way to play well in that alternate shot. That will be the key tomorrow."
Larry Nelson and Bruce Fleisher had a two-stroke lead in the Legends Division for players 65 and older, shooting a 6-under 48 at Top of the Rock to reach 15-under 93. They will finish with a nine-hole round on the par-3 course.
"We just try to make as many birdies as we can," Nelson said. "Tomorrow will not be alternate shot or anything, it'll just be straight best ball, which kind of helps both of us."
The teams of Jim Thorpe-Doug Tewell and John Bland-Graham Marsh were tied for second. Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player were tied for sixth at 4 under par
Colin Montgomerie and Mark O'Meara are sharing seventh place after a 66.
