Edinburgh and East of Scotland Alliance

Duncan Stewart wins with a 66 at

Duddingston

FROM ALAN GREENSHIELDS

A healthy turn-out of 94 Edinburgh and East of Scotland Alliance  Members visited a very well presented course at Duddingston to try to  get their name on The Bootland Trophy.

Some excellent scoring from the professional ranks saw the top scratch score of 66 (34-32) from Duncan Stewart (Turnhouse) win the top prize and also claim The Bootland Trophy on the par 72 course (37-35).

Close on his heels with second place scratch score was Craig Gordon (Edinburgh Golf Centre) with 67 (34,33) whose bogey 6 at the 17th lost him some ground

In third place scratch was Zack Saltman (Archerfield Links) on 68 (31-37) whose outward nine was made up of seven birdies, one par and one bogey. After the turn a double bogey 5 at the short 10th proved costly.
On the handicap front scoring was very close with the top net score of 69 being achieved by four players - Ron Grant (Baberton) 75 less 6, Willie Laing (Prestonfield) 76 less 7, Steven Lees (Dalmahoy) 75 less 6 (even with a bogey at 17th and triple bogey at 18th) and Andy McElhinney (Harburn) 78 less 9.
Top Senior prize on net 71 went to Mortonhall's Alastair Love, 77 less 6, and the Trainee Prize went to Marc Owenson (Gullane) on 80.

In the Scratch Order of Merit Andy Marshall now has a 48 point lead following another solid performance with his 73 earning him a share of 5th Scratch Prize -

1. Andy Marshall (Houston GR) - 232.0
2. George Wither (Duddingston) - 184.0
3. Andrew Erskine (Ratho Park) - 177.0

In the Handicap Order of Merit Willie Laing jumped from fourth to top place -

1. Willie Laing (Prestonfield) - 59.0
2. Graeme Johnston (Glenbervie) - 58.0
3. Ron Grant (Baberton) - 56.0

Play stays in Midlothian next week with a visit to Kings Acre Golf Course.

McBain off the mark with victory at Montrose

Greg McBain (Paul Lawrie Golf Centre) scored his first win of the North-east Alliance season with a three-under-par 68 at Montrose Links today.

On a miserable misty, damp day, when there were 19 No Returns,  McBain, pictured, headed a field of 94 with halves of 34 (two under par out, one under par in).
He birdied the second, fourth, sixth and 13th, dropping only one shot to par, at the third.
Runner-up on 69 was reinstated amateur Tony Robertson (Peterculter) with halves of 36 and 33. Highlight of Tony's card was an eagle at the par-5 sixth, backed up with birdies at the 10th, 15th and 18th.
Murcar Links tour pro Terry Mathieson filled third place with a 70, made up of 17 pars and a birdie at the 13th.
Mathieson finished  - two ahead of Craig Lawrie and Philip McLean, both Paul Lawrie Golf Centre players.
Craig will have bragging rights in the Lawrie household tonight - dad Paul had a 75

PGA EUROPRO TOUR CHAMPIONSHIP IN SPAIN

Lloyd Saltman leading Scot in T9 position after first round 69

NEWS RELEASE FROM EUROPRO TOUR
By Nick Teale
Sam Connor is among four golfers who share the five under par first-round lead on 67 in the HotelPlanner.com PGA EuroPro Tour’s Matchroom Sport Tour Championship at Desert Springs Resort, Almeria in Spain.

Connor (Alsager Golf and Country Club) has won twice this season and sits third on the Race To Desert Springs Order of Merit. He looks certain to claim one of the five Challenge Tour cards offered to the EuroPro’s best five performers of the year, and is now eyeing top spot on the Tour’s money rankings.

The Staffordshire golfer is joined at the top of the round one scoring by Northern Ireland’s Jonathan Caldwell (BetMcLean), Yorkshireman Daniel Gavins (Walton Driving Range) and Cheshire’s Haydn McCullen (Delamere Forest), who all recorded opening-round 67s on Wednesday.

McCullen earned his first pro win at Prince’s in September and victory this week would see him crash the top five on the money list to claim a Challenge Tour spot for 2016.

“I played really well and was never in any trouble,” said co-leader Connor, who carded six birdies with a bogey at the eighth his only blemish. “On a different day on the greens I could have gone really low but I am really happy with my game at the moment. I controlled the ball really well.

“I didn’t feel any less pressure this week [with a top five Order of Merit finish looking certain], but maybe others felt more pressure than me. It is all about how you deal with that pressure and I just focused on what I am doing, the same as usual.

“I will keep playing, keep going and see what happens but it would be great to win the Order of Merit.”

Aaron Rai (DCD Group) currently occupies that fifth place on the rankings by just over £100 from Paul Howard but responded to the pressure with an opening-round 68 to sit just one off the lead in a four-way tie for fifth.

“It is a bit different coming into this week and you are aware of being fifth and what is around you,” said Rai. “It is important to be able to approach this like any other tournament and do your normal preparation and hope that is good enough at the end of the three days.

“I was very steady today. I dropped one shot but didn’t make too many mistakes. The game plan for the week will be very much the same; try and be tight and not give too much away.”

“The course has been great. It isn’t something you see every day; it is quite unique for Europe. It is in great condition this week; quite soft and the greens are running very well. The wind picked up a bit today which has made it a bit trickier but overall it is a good test.”

The Matchroom Sport Tour Championship is a 54-hole strokeplay event which concludes on Friday. A two-hour highlights package from the tournament will air on Sky Sports on Tuesday, November 10 with a season review show to broadcast the following week.
SCOTSWATCH:  Lloyd Saltman is the leading Scot in a share of ninth place with a 69, one ahead of Jordan McColl (T18). Ross Cameron is tied 32nd on 72 with Michael Stewart on 74, Paul Shields 75 and Neil Fenw a disappointing 79 to be 53rd of the 56 competitors.

Corfield steps up to win after leader Lutton drops back

NEWS RELEASE FROM VIREN VARMA
MUSCAT – Englishman Lee Corfield wiped off a two-shot deficit in windy conditions to win the Ghala Open for his fourth victory on the MENA Golf Tour today.

Playing in the day’s second last group at Ghala Golf Club in Oman, Corfield closed with a bogey-free three-under 69 to finish at eight under 208, two clear of Germany’s Aaron Leitmannstetter with England’s Stuart Archibald third on five under 211.

“It was probably the best round I played this year. Going bogey-free in such windy and tricky conditions shows I played some good golf out there,” said Corfield after receiving the winner’s trophy from Ziyad Al Zubai, a board member of Ghala Golf Club, and Mohamed Juma Buamaim, chairman of the MENA Golf Tour.

“I got a bit lucky on the 9th when I managed to save a par from beneath a palm tree. Overall, it was a pretty solid round,” he said.

“The standard of golf on the MENA Golf Tour is getting better and better every year. There is more strength in depth,” said the Englishman who thanked his coaches Justin Parsons and Clauding Foong at the Butch Harmon School of Golf at The Els Club Dubai for all their hard work they have done on his game.

Germany’s Leitmannstetter matched day’s best score of a 68, which contained six birdies and two bogeys, to move up the leaderboard as Clarke Lutton from Aberdeen, the overnight leader, carded a final round five-over 77 to slip to tied eighth on two under 214.

“I started off well, but a miscued approach on the seventh ruined my confidence. I just struggled to string together the round thereafter,” said Lutton, who broke through for his maiden win on the MENA Golf Tour at The Els Club earlier this month.

India’s Rayhan Thomas returned a two-under 70 to win the Leading Amateur award at one-over, one ahead of England’s James Allan, the current Order of Merit leader in the division.

The MENA Golf Tour travels to Ras Al Khaimah next week for the ninth and penultimate event of the season, starting on Monday.
