Frenchman douses Forrest fire in Amateur Championship Final

Frenchman Romain Langasque will take a three-hole lead against Craigielaw's Grant Forre into the afternoon round of the Amateur Championship's 36-hole final at Carnoustie.
The 20-year-old from Cannes took charge of the early proceedings in
the morning round and Forrest was forced to hole testing putts on the
first two holes to remain all square. On the par four 3rd hole, both
players found greenside bunkers with their tee shots but Langasque
splashed out to a foot from the hole and the putt was conceded.
Forrest’s 8 ft putt lipped out and his opponent went one up.
The next four holes were halved in par before the Frenchman holed a
series of lengthy putts for three consecutive birdies from the 8th hole
to go four up and take a grip on the match.
Forrest bogeyed the par four
11th hole to fall five behind but showed his battling qualities to
bounce back with an excellent drive and approach for an eagle on the par
five 12th to win the hole after Langasque found a bunker from the tee
and could only manage a birdie.
The Frenchman, who won the Southern Cross Invitational in Argentina
in March, kept up the pressure and restored his five-hole lead by
winning the 14th after Forrest put his drive out of bounds.
Forrest recovered to win the 15th with a birdie and the 16th when
Langasque failed to get up and down with his chip from left of the
green.
On the 17th, Forrest found the fairway from the tee while his
opponent was in the right hand rough and could only hit his approach 20
yards short of the green.
The 2014 St Andrews Links Trophy champion and 2012 Scottish amateur champion
pulled his approach into thick rough left of the green and, when he
could only find the edge of the green with his first chip and his next
went past the cup, the hole was lost.
On the 18th hole, Langasque drove into a bunker on the right of the
fairway and his escape found a greenside bunker on the right.
With
Forrest on the green in two, Langasque overcooked his bunker shot to go
out of bounds beyond the green and was forced to concede the hole to
leave him three up going into this afternoon’s round.
Grant is trying to succeed compatriot Bradley Neil, the 2014 title-winner, as Amateur champion.
