Amid major champions and former PGA Tour standouts, Jerry Smith took
the lead at the Champions Tour's Tucson Conquistadores Classic on Friday with a
first-round 65.
Smith, who earned his spot on the tour through Q-school last year, played the front nine – his final nine holes after starting on No. 10 -– in 6-under 30 at Omni Tucson National in Arizona, including a hole-in-one at the 197yd seventh.
Smith leads a group of four by two shots, including Colin Montgomerie. Reigning Schwab Cup champion Bernhard Langer carded a 3-under 69 in Thursday's first round and is tied for ninth. Tom Watson teed it up in Arizona, shooting a 4-over 76.
