EAST OF SCOTLAND OPEN AMATEUR CHSHIP TEE TIMES JUNE 28
FINN ILONEN STILL LEADS IRISH OPEN BY TWO SHOTS
RORY AND TOP SCOTS MISS CORK CUT
EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS REPORT
Mikko Ilonen maintained his two-stroke lead on the second day of the Irish Open, but the Finn has Graeme McDowell breathing down his neck after the home hero shot a superb round of 66.
McDowell had set the early pace with six birdies to climb to eight under par on another glorious day in Cork, but he was overhauled later in the day by Ilonen, who mixed five birdies with two bogeys in his round of 68.
England’s Robert Rock and Frenchman Romain Wattel made it a three-way tie for second place alongside McDowell after signing for respective rounds of 66 and 65.
Unfortunately for the huge crowds at Fota Island Resort, Shane Lowry and Rory McIlroy both missed the halfway cut on one over par; but Padraig Harrington is firmly in contention to win his national Open for a second time after carding a round of 67 for a six under par aggregate total.
KEY QUOTES
Mikko Ilonen
“I wanted to get to double digits, so I reached my goal. I got there with a birdie on 16 but then I lost it with the bogey on 17, so it was good to birdie the last hole. I wanted to get to at least ten under, and I just did that.”
Graeme McDowell
“I’ve played in front of many big crowds before, but maybe none as passionate as the Irish crowd. There’s nothing quite like it when a crowd is pulling for you, it’s a fun experience. I’ve never really experienced it before, except perhaps at The Ryder Cup, so I’m looking forward to the weekend.
“It’s just fun to be part of this tournament, and fun to be contending. This is my type of golf course, and I’m loving every minute of it out there.”
Robert Rock
“It’s nice to be right in the tournament after two days. I’ve had a bit of a rough spell recently, so it feels better to be making some putts and shooting under par.
“My putting this week has been the key. I had 22 putts today – 22 putts for me is normally the front nine! I’ve put in a lot of hard work over the last few months, and it’s good to see it paying off.”
Padraig Harrington
“There’s no doubt that you’ve got to use the crowd’s momentum, but it can a double edged sword to be honest and I’ve found over the years it put a lot of pressure on me, the expectation.
“I think I’ve mellowed a little bit, and especially having won one, you realise people are behind you and encouraging you but you have to get away from that expectation. It’s not that easy to deliver all the time and win any tournament on demand. You have to relax a little bit and enjoy the applause, which I definitely do, but I don’t get too carried away with the expectations.”
Rory McIlroy
“Obviously I’m very disappointed. It’s a tournament that is very important to me, and I want to do well. To come here two years on the bounce and not even be in for the weekend, that’s not very nice.
“I just need to tighten it all up and become a lot more consistent, and just make the bad shots a little bit better and not be as wasteful around the greens. If I can do that, I know my game is right there.
“I’ve got a couple weeks off now to work on my game a little bit and play some links golf so I can get ready for the Scottish Open and The Open.”

CHALLENGE OPEN AFTER A 63
Jason Palmer surged into the lead at the Belgian Challenge Open thanks to a fine eight under par 63 in the second round at the idyllic Cleydael Golf and Country Club.
Palmer, who won three times last year on Challenge Tour satellite circuit, The Alps Tour, moved to 13 under par for the tournament, two shots ahead of Mexican Rodolfo Cazaubon, and three clear of Frenchman Joël Stalter and Germany’s Florian Fritsch.
The 29 year old could have gone even lower had he started as he finished, but the Englishman still had every reason to be upbeat about his display.
“My start was steady, but it wasn’t great,” said Palmer. “At the start you really need to get a score going but I was only one under par through six holes so I was a little bit disappointed with that.
“But I birdied seven which was a good gain. I then birdied eight and then the putts just seemed to keep dropping. Once I saw one going in, I felt that I could hole every single putt and that's kind of what happened.”
The conditions were more favourable in northern Belgium on Friday, a factor which Palmer took full advantage of. His memorable performance puts the Alps Tour back in the spotlight, with fellow former graduate Thomas Linard having triumphed at the D+D Real Czech Challenge earlier this month.
“Thomas’ win in the Czech Republic was just fantastic,” Palmer continued. “It shows what is possible for all of the Alps Tour graduates. It is great to see all the Alps Tour guys doing well.”
Promising young Frenchman Stalter holds a share of third place heading into the weekend after also going low with eight birdies coming in the 21 year old’s seven under par 64.
Stalter was one of the hottest prospects in American college golf while representing the University of California, having claimed five senior titles, overtaking former Challenge Tour winner Julien Brun as the number one French amateur in the process.
And it seems Stalter is already adapting to the new surroundings in what is only his second appearance as a professional.
“It is wetter here compared to the States, so you have to hit more controlled shots,” he said. “I had a game plan and I worked on a few different shots at the range that I knew I would need to hit this week. I have been working really well with my caddy and I think we played the right shots at the right time.”
Germany’s Fritsch is alongside Stalter after he followed up his opening round of 64 with a three under par 68 while Spaniard Alvaro Velasco is a further shot back at nine under overall alongside Englishman William Harrold.
Meanwhile, overnight leader Dave Coupland dropped back into a tie for ninth, after shooting a one over par 72.

THIRTY-SIX HOLE PRO-AM AT OBAN VENUE
FRASER'S THE MANN WITH A
ONE-UNDER 61 ATGLENCRUITTEN
Fraser Mann shot a one-under-par 61 to be the halfway leader in the professional section of the Glencruitten Golf Club 36-hole pro-am at Oban today.
Over a course that has 10 par-3 holes but no par-5s, Mann, playing out of Carnoustie Golf Club, birdied the second, fourth, seventh and 18th but dropped shots at the 11th, 12th and 17th.
He leads by a shot from Kenny Walker (Castle Park), making his usual summer return from Thailand to play the Tartan Tour, and Chris Kelly (Cawder).
Graham Fox (Clydeway Golf) is one of five players sharing fourth place on one-over-par 62.
Fox threatened to spreadeagle the field over the tricky Glencruitten course when he birdied the second, fourth, sixth and eighth to be four under the card.
But, astonishingly, Fox then bogeyed five holes in success from the ninth to the 13th ... and parred in from the 14th.
Kenny Walker and his 18-handicap partner George MacKenzie won the team event for the first day with a net score of seven-under-par 55.

NEWS RELEASE FROM THE EUROPRO TOUR
Stiggy
Hodgson won his first HotelPlanner.com PGA EuroPro Tour title with a
play-off victory over Elliot Saltman and Luke Joy after carding a
final-round 63 (-8) to finish the tournament 13 under par.
The
former Walker Cup man began the day six shots behind leader Joy
(Broadstone Golf Club) but carded eight birdies in an unblemished final
round to tie with Joy and Scotsman Saltman (Archerfield Links Golf
Club).
Joy
had led by two after 36 holes but a mixed final 18 saw him card a 69
for two under, while Saltman was six under for the day to reach thirteen
under for the tournament.
The play-off took place on the 18th.
Saltman found the trees lining the right side of the fairway and was
forced to play back out to the fairway and took five strokes to finish
the par-four hole.
Joy’s tee shot landed left of
the fairway and he was unlucky when a fine approach bounced off the
green, leaving him two putts for par.
Hodgson
(The Wisley Golf Club), however, took driver from the tee and cracked
it straight down the middle. His wedge shot in landed just two foot from
the pin and when he tapped it home for victory was clearly delighted to
have held his
nerve.
“I
have worked so hard and been through a lot,” said Hodgson, who wins the
£10,000 top prize as well as a brand new Motocaddy trolley and Shotsaver
range finder. “It makes you want it that little bit more and when it
pays off like that
it means the world to you.
“I
wasn’t going to give up, it didn’t matter how far behind I started off. I
kept going and kept going and went for the jugular from the off and
luckily it paid off.
“My
best mate Paul Boardman usually caddies for me but he couldn’t be here
today. I could hear his voice saying ‘keep going kid, keep going,’ and
that is what I did. It certainly made it more difficult not having him
on the bag today.
“I
was aggressive in the play off, I went for driver as I had done all week
so why change it? My wedge play, there aren’t many better than me I
know that.
"My putt was horrible, downhill left to right but at that
point desire takes over
and there was no way I was missing that.”
Luke
Jackson took fourth on twelve under, just one stroke short of joining
the play-off while Scotland’s Paul Shields was one further back on 11
under. Both had carded six-under 65s for their final round.
The
final round was filmed for a two-hour highlights programme to be aired
on Sky Sports HD on Tuesday, July 1 with repeats the following day. The
HotelPlanner.com PGA EuroPro Tour continues next week with the Buildbase
Open at Frilford
Heath Golf Club in Abingdon, Oxfordshire.

for the tournament at
the same venue on 9 June. They were led by Ciar Porcini (seeded two)
from Turnberry, who returned a score of 67 around the par 71 course.
This
is an Order of Merit event counting towards the Young Pro’s OOM 2014,
and is the first of five counting events this year.
It has been possible
to increase the number
of events thanks to the backing of WL Gore and Galvin Green who are
jointly sponsoring the Scottish Young Pro’s OOM.
There is a prize-fund of £5,000 for the tournament, with the winner taking home £900.
Tournament
Director Roy Murray commented “We owe a huge debt of thanks to W L Gore
and Galvin Green for their support in putting on additional events for
our Trainee Professionals.
"It is really important that they get the chance to play competitive
golf against their peers to continue the promise they have shown in the
amateur ranks.
"We are also very grateful to Greenburn Golf Club for
allowing us the use of their course for the two
days.”

THREE SCOTS MAKE THE CUT IN
72-HOLE ALPS TOUR EVENT
Ayrshire's Michael Stewart, Fifer James White and John Gallagher from Edinburgh all made the halfway cut in this week's 72-hole Alps Tour event in France, La Mirabelle d'Or at Golf de la Grange aux Ormes.
Stewart is lying joint 15th on 143, seven shots behind the two Frenchman who are sharing the lead. Michael had an excellent second-round, three-under-par 68, an improvement of seven shots.
White and Gallagher both got through on the limit mark of 147 which, for most of the day, looked like being one stroke too many.
But late on the scores deteriorated a trifle and instead of 146 being the cut mark, 147 was the magic number.
White had rounds of 72 and 75, Gallacher 73 and 74. They are tied 40th going into the third round.
Most Alps Tour events are over three rounds. This one is an exception. It is over 72 holes.
One Scot did not survive the cut. John Henry (Clydebank and District) missed it by one with scores of 76 and 72 for 148.

overcame strong English opponent Toby Tree.
Sharvin enjoyed a strong local
following cheering him on as a member of Ardglass Golf Club in nearby
County Down but Howard showed his character to take an early lead in the
match.
The 23-year-old went two up after
four holes, but bogeys at the sixth and seventh saw his lead wiped out.
He pulled ahead again at the par-4, eighth hole when Sharvin bogeyed
the hole. Then Howard stepped up the pressure. The plus 5 handicapper
birdied the 10th, 11th and 14th holes to take an unassailable four-hole lead.
“It’s the best I have played all
week,” Howard said. “Today was the most confident I have been on the
golf course. The shot that got me going was a 7-iron to two feet at the
10th to go two up.”
Howard hit another 7-iron into the 11th and holed a 25-foot birdie putt. At the par-3, 14th hole, he hit a high 4-iron to 15 feet and holed that putt too. A half at the next saw him win 4 and 3.
Towndrow also went ahead early
against Tree and was feeling in control of the match. “I was two up
after five holes and that gave me a lot of confidence,” he said.
Tree reduced the arrears when Towndrow stepped on his ball on the 10th hole to incur a one-shot penalty and lose the hole. Towndrow lost the 11th when Tree birdied but he hit straight back when he hit a 60-yard lob wedge to eight feet at the 15th and holed the birdie putt. Pars on the next two holes gave him a 2 and 1 victory.
Daniel Brown is still on track to
double up as leading qualifier and Amateur Champion. Brown overcame
two-time Walker Cup player Rhys Pugh 3 and 2 to earn a spot in the last
eight.
The 19-year-old dropped four straight shots from the sixth hole
but still found himself three up through that stretch.
“It was a scrappy match,” Brown
admitted. “My ball striking hasn’t been as good over the last two days
as it was in the qualifying so that’s something I need to sort out. My
putting inside 10 feet has been a lot better though. I holed a lot of
putts inside 10 feet to keep the pressure on him.”
In the later matches Scotland’s
Bradley Neil defeated Frenchman Leonard Bem 2 and 1 and Neil’s fellow
Scot Jamie Savage eliminated Switzerland's Mathias Eggenberger, a Stirling student, by a
3 and 1 margin.

BARRY BROOKS WINS SCOTTISH
SENIORS' TITLE BY SIX STROKES
By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com
Aberdonian Barry Brooks maintained the lead over the last 36 holes to run out a comfortable six-stroke winner of the Scottish senior open amateur stroke-play championship over the Rosemount course at Blairgowrie Golf Club today.
Brooks had scores of 70, 69 and 74 for a three-under-par total of 213.
Three Englishmen tied for second place - Alan Mew (Stoneham), whose closing 71 was the joint best last round, Roy Smethurst (Crewe) and Stephen East (Moortown).
Brooks was Aberdeen Links champion in 1992, playing out of the Northern Golf Club. He is now a member at the exclusive members' club, Meldrum House, at Oldmeldrum, Aberdeenshire. He is the first member of that golf club, which was founded in 1997, to win a national title.
After the second-round slump by the clear first-day leader, Ian Brotherston (Dumfries and County) from an opening 67 to an 83, Brooks led by four shots from Ian Hutcheon, winner of the title in 2003, 2004 and 2007, at the start of the final round.
The Monifieth maestro's bid for a fourth over-55s' title were buried under 41 shots to the turn on his way to a five-over 77.
Hutcheon, pictured right by courtesy of Steve Ellis, uncharacteristically, opened with a triple bogey 7 and then bogeyed the second, fourth and seventh - six shots shed over the first seven holes.
Out in 41, he covered his last 11 holes in one under par with a bogey-free run and a solitary birdie at the 14th.
Brooks too did not play nearly as well as he had done over the first two days. Whereas on Wednesday and Thursday, he covered the outward half in three-under 33, Brooks, bogeying the second and fifth, required 37 shots for the first nine in the last round and did not have a single birdie.
Barry is the first winner of the prestigious title from the North or North-east of Scotland since Norman Grant (Moray) won at Falkirk Tryst in 2000.
Richard Latham (Woodhall Spa), the defending champion, finished sixth on 221.
