ENGLAND GOLF NEWS RELEASE
Windermere’s
Adam Chapman held off a challenge from England A squad team-mate Jamie
Bower to clinch the North of England Open amateur stroke-play championship by a single stroke.
Adam Chapman doubles up with North of England crown
His
victory means Chapman has completed a North/South double having won the
South of England Championship at Walton Heath in July.
The
19 year old England international held his nerve on the fourth and
final round at Pannal in a thrilling encounter that was decided on the
final hole.
Chapman needed a par on the 18th for victory and a precise iron shot from the tee set up a simple pitch to six feet.
The
Cumbrian teenager had started the day with a four-stroke lead over
nearest challenger Bower, but bogeys on the third and fourth saw the
Yorkshireman, from Meltham quickly trim the gap to one.
Chapman’s
birdie on the sixth calmed the nerves and he played steadily until a
drive into the trees on the short par four 14th saw him drop a further
shot.
However,
the set-back proved an inspiration as he birdied the next two holes
before dropping a further shot at the 17th. His par on the last saw him
finish the round at one over 73.
Chapman put himself in pole position from the start with an opening seven-under-par 65 followed by two rounds of 69.
“I’ve
played nicely this week and hit the ball well but I’ve had a bit of
luck too with some good lies and bounces. I played with a new putter and
that seemed to work well,” he said.
Lifting
the Shaw Plate was the second time Chapman has tasted victory at the
famous Yorkshire course this season – in July he won the Pannal Rose
Bowl by six shots.
