BARRY AND SCOTT EARN SILVER MEDALS

LEVEN THISTLE PLAYER DAVID

MITCHELL WINS GOLD MEDAL

Leven Thistle players David Mitchell and Scott Stewart-Cation were the local heroes of the weekend's Standard Life Leven Gold Medal 72-hole SGU Order of Merit event.
David Mitchell is aged 26 and has been a member of Leven Thistle Golf Club for 12 years.
He is now playing off +1.6 (after the weekend!).
Previously, he has won the Fife boys' stroke-play, the Fife boys' match-play and the Fife youths' match-play events.
He is a past club champion of Kinross Golf Club and reached the last 16 of the last Scottish Amateur championship.
So if Mitchell was a surprise winner to some outwith Fife of the oldest stroke-play amateur tournament on the golf calendar worldwide, within the county David's capabilities were well known.
He won the Gold Medal with a four-under-par total of 280, coming with a strong last round of four-under 67 for victory despite the very wet conditions later in the day.
One stroke behind were joint runners-up Stewart-Cation and Barry Hume (Haggs Castle), the halfway leader. They both received silver medals.
Stewart-Cation signed off with a pair of 67s and Hume a 68. A third-round 73 on Sunday morning, his worst of the four rounds, cost Barry the lead and ultimately victory.
The same could be said about Stewart-Cation who had a five-over 76 in Saturday afternoon's second round. He had the best Sunday aggregate of 134.
Reinstated amateur Ed Wood was another who excelled on Sunday. After Saturday rounds of 77 and 76 for 153, the Crow Wood player totalled 136 for the third and fourth rounds - 69 and 67, an improvement of 17 shots.
The first three were the only players to finish under par for the 72 holes.
