Cruden Bay's Stephen Roger, beaten finalist in the recent Cruden Bay Challenge Cup men's open tournament, continued his fine form this season by winning the Paul Lawrie Foundation North-east District Under-18 boys' stroke-play golf championship at Inverurie Golf Club today (Monday).
Roger, only 16, had rounds of 68 and 71 for a total of one-over-par 139.
He had a shot to spare from runner-up Sam Locke (Banchory) who scored 68-72 for 140. Sam had the consolation of winning the Under-16 scratch title.
Roger, Cruden Bay junior champion in 2013 and playing in the final again this coming Saturday,  had seven birdies over the two rounds, the sub-par figures at the first, third and ninth in his outward half of 33 in the second round proving invaluable when he bogeyed the ll1th, 12th, 14th and 15th in an inward 38.
Locke got on terms with Roger in the closing stages but was left rueing a bogey at the 17th where he was short of the green, elected to putt and took three to get down.
"I putted well on very good greens and my wedge play was good as well," said Roger whose short game is reaping the dividends of regular lunchtime winter practice between morning and afternoon school lessons.
Calum Morrison (Inverurie)  and Calvin Duffton (Torphins) both finished on 143 with rounds of 70-73.
The first four automatically make up the field for the Paul Lawrie Foundation NE District boys match-play championship at the same venue tomorrow (Tuesday)
Roger will play Duffton at 8.45am and it will be Locke v Morrison at 8.51. The final will be played in the afternoon, teeing off at 1.33pm.
The NE District Under-14s stroke-play championship is also being played tomorrow with a very small field.
The Under-18s handicap championship today was won by Calum Sheal (Cruden Bay) with a net total of 130 off 12 of a handicap. He had net rounds of 69 and 61
