Day Three Report from European Tour Communications
Spaniard Antonio Hortal shot a
course record-equalling 63 on Saturday to claim a narrow lead at the
weather-affected Challenge de Catalunya, which will be completed on
Sunday after being reduced to 54 holes.
With day two all-but wiped out
by strong winds at Lumine Golf & Beach Club, in Tarragona, it was
24 year old Hortal who capitalised when the second round finally
continued on Saturday morning, matching the 63 shot in round one by Dane
Joakim Mikkelsen to reach 11 under par – one clear of his nearest
challenger, American Connor Arendell, with 18 holes to come.
Hortal, searching for a maiden
Challenge Tour title after struggling somewhat in his first two seasons
on Tour, fired six birdies and one eagle in a blistering second round,
the latter coming thanks to a 33 foot left-to-righter at the long second
 hole in northern Spain.
Qualifying School graduate
Arendell, looking to become the fourth American to win on the Challenge
Tour in the last two seasons after compatriots Brooks Koepka, Brinson
Paolini and Peter Uihlein, mixed six birdies with two bogeys for a
hard-fought 67.
Ireland’s Niall Kearney,
meanwhile, shot a superb 66 to move 43 places up the leaderboard into a
share of third place – three shots off Hortal’s lead – alongside a trio
of Frenchman in Cyril Bouniol, Adrien Saddier and Jerome Lando Casanova.
With more gusty conditions forecast for Sunday, the event has been
 reduced to a 54 hole contest for the second time in three years.Key Quotes Hortal: “I was on my tenth hole when they called the suspension yesterday. So I started the round today and it all went perfect! I have played well in all areas. “Last year I had a bad time on Tour. I was new and my thoughts were always very negative. Working with Alejandro Ramos has completely changed my mind. He says that my game is at the top and I have to believe it, and believe in me. “Things are going great. I'm still working with Pepin Rivero and we have Alejandro in the team who is caddying for me just this week. He's been a great help, he plans my training and is helping me not to have negative thoughts on the course and in life. “If I hit a bad shot, I now don’t worry about it and take the positive side of it. Everybody is hitting bad shots but for me it wasn't the case today, I hit everything perfectly. The key today was not to look at the leaderboard and not to worry about other's scores.” Arendell: “This course suits me well so I will just have to hang there with the wind. Everything feels great but this week putting is being really good, I am giving myself lots of opportunities for birdie. “Last year I went to both Q Schools and got my card to play on The European Tour. There are more Americans coming over. Peter (Uihlein) and Brooks (Koepka) are friends of mine, we are the same age and played together at college so we know each other really well and of course what they are doing here is a good reference to follow. “I am used to playing with the wind, I come from Florida where we are used to play with wind, is a bit cooler here but it will be no big deal for me for tomorrow". Talking points Hortal’s 63 was his lowest career round in his 19th Challenge Tour appearance Will be the first Challenge Tour event to be reduced to 54 holes since the Challenge de Catalunya in September 2012 – won by American Brooks Koeopka Arendell looking to continue the recent run of American Challenge Tour success after compatriots Brooks Koepka, Brinson Paolini and Peter Uihlein ALL THE SECOND-ROUND SCORES 131 A Hortal (Esp) 68 63, 132 C Arendell (USA) 65 67, 134 C Bouniol (Fra) 66 68, A Saddier (Fra) 64 70, N Kearney (Irl) 69 65, J Lando Casanova (Fra) 66 68, C Shinkwin (Eng) 66 68, 135 L Gagli (Ita) 68 67, L Jensen (Den) 68 67, B An (Kor) 67 68, N Kimsey (Eng) 69 66, 136 A Dunbar (Nir) 66 70, P Archer (Eng) 70 66, 137 R Kind (Ned) 65 72, A Marshall (Eng) 68 69, J Bragulat (Esp) 68 69, C Mivis (Bel) 68 69, A Johnston (Eng) 68 69, L Nemecz (Aut) 68 69, J Gonnet (Fra) 70 67, S Wakefield (Eng) 67 70, M Lorenzo-Vera (Fra) 68 69, E Espana (Fra) 66 71, 138 J Sarasti (Esp) 69 69, P Figueiredo (Por) 69 69, J Garcia Pinto (Esp) 70 68, D Brooks (Eng) 69 69, M Korhonen (Fin) 70 68, J Pastor (Esp) 66 72, M Ford (Eng) 68 70, M Lafeber (Ned) 66 72, 139 P Edberg (Swe) 68 71, O Wilson (Eng) 72 67, S Arnold (Aus) 68 71, N Ravano (Ita) 67 72, J Dantorp (Swe) 68 71, J Doherty (Sco) 70 69, D Gaunt (Eng) 69 70, J Sjöholm (Swe) 67 72, J Mikkelsen (Nor) 63 76, B Evans (Eng) 68 71, E Johansen (Nor) 67 72, 140 N Lemke (Swe) 67 73, B Hebert (Fra) 68 72, S Henry (Sco) 69 71, B Åkesson (Swe) 67 73, P Maddy (Eng) 69 71, R Davies (Wal) 70 70, C Lloyd (Eng) 68 72, P Oriol (Esp) 68 72, F Bergamaschi (Ita) 70 70, J Lagergren (Swe) 69 71, C Macaulay (Sco) 71 69, 141 S Hutsby (Eng) 72 69, S Garcia Rodriguez (Esp) 70 71, P Widegren (Swe) 67 74, J Barnes (Eng) 71 70, J Palmer (Eng) 74 67, C Aguilar (Esp) 70 71, K Benz (Sui) 68 73, A Tadini (Ita) 68 73, W Besseling (Ned) 68 73, T Van Der Walt (RSA) 71 70, D Kemmer (USA) 70 71, D Law (Sco) 71 70, MISSED THE CUT 142 O Stark (Swe) 75 67, A Rota (Ita) 72 70, B Ritthammer (Ger) 73 69, L Kennedy (Eng) 70 72, F Fritsch (Ger) 69 73, M Haastrup (Den) 67 75, R McGee (Irl) 66 76, A Velasco (Esp) 73 69, G Lockerbie (Eng) 68 74, A Björk (Swe) 72 70, R McEvoy (Eng) 72 70, 143 B Stone (RSA) 71 72, P McKechnie (Sco) 70 73, M Orrin (Eng) 70 73, T Nørret (Den) 71 72, J Huldahl (Den) 71 72, G Woolgar (Eng) 67 76, M Quiros (Esp) 69 74, G Cambis (Fra) 69 74, B Virto (Esp) 69 74, 144 A Gee (Eng) 71 73, M Lundberg (Swe) 67 77, A Domingo (Esp) 72 72, M Delpodio (Ita) 71 73, J Elson (Eng) 72 72, R Coles (Eng) 75 69, D Higgins (Irl) 68 76, N Thommen (Sui) 73 71, J Lara (Esp) 71 73, 145 D Gavins (Eng) 70 75, X Guzman (Esp) 69 76, C Hanson (Eng) 73 72, T Lee (USA) 70 75, M Jonzon (Swe) 69 76, D Frittelli (RSA) 74 71, J Guerrier (Fra) 71 74, R Russell (Sco) 72 73, L Goddard (Eng) 69 76, 146 B Dredge (Wal) 70 76, G Watremez (Bel) 75 71, B Etchart (Esp) 71 75, C Russo (Fra) 71 75, P Relecom (Bel) 72 74, P Martin Benavides (Esp) 70 76, G Piris Mateu (Esp) 69 77, P Gal (Cze) 70 76, D Coupland (Eng) 74 72, M Trappel (Aut) 71 75, D Im (USA) 74 72, 147 J Camargo (Esp) 71 76, O Floren (Swe) 75 72, L Corfield (Eng) 72 75, N Quintarelli (Ita) 73 74, M Wiegele (Aut) 72 75, H Sayin (Tur) 73 74, A McArthur (Sco) 74 73, 148 B Pettersson (Swe) 72 76, T Linard (Fra) 72 76, T Sluiter (Ned) 72 76, M Tullo (Chi) 73 75, J Rask (Swe) 72 76, D Ulrich (Sui) 70 78, 149 P Bech (Esp) 72 77, N Raymond (Eng) 72 77, L Claverie (Esp) 71 78, S Luna (Esp) 72 77, G Shaw (Nir) 73 76, S Tiley (Eng) 69 80, J Gallegos (Esp) 80 69, O Farr (Wal) 71 78, A Garcia-Heredia (Esp) 73 76, 150 J Kennegard (Swe) 75 75, S Garcia (Esp) 76 74, R Steiner (Aut) 74 76, D Stewart (Sco) 72 78, E Dubois (Fra) 72 78, 151 C Paisley (Eng) 73 78, 152 J Legarrea (Esp) 77 75, S Little (Eng) 75 77, A Snobeck (Fra) 74 78, 153 K Samooja (Fin) 78 75, X Ruiz Fonhof (Ned) 74 79, I Giner (Esp) 71 82, T Pulkkanen (Fin) 75 78, 155 M Dobias (Sui) 76 79, J Sierra (Esp) 75 80, 158 R Hahn (Hun) 79 79, 161 A Rajmont (Cze) 78 83, 163 A Savolainen (Fin) 78 85, ** S Piaget (Mon) 78 RT, Z Scotland (Eng) 71 RT,
