NEWS RELEASE FROM SCOTTISH GOLF UNION
The
curtain comes down on the Scottish amateur domestic season in St
Andrews this weekend when the Scottish Junior Champion of Champions is
staged
at The Duke’s Course.
Lauren
Whyte (St Regulus) ended her year on a high by claiming the girls’
title at the venue last weekend, meaning it’s the turn of the boys on
Saturday
(19 October).
In
tough conditions, Whyte edged out international team-mate Nicola
Robertson (Dunblane New) by a shot to win the title with an impressive
73 – following
in the spike marks of a notable past winner, Ladies European Tour star
Carly Booth.
A
star-studded field of 46 male junior winners will now gather for an
end-of-year contest to determine who will be crowned ‘Champion of
Champions’.
National
winners, Area champions and internationalists from across Scotland will
all assemble at the world-renowned Fife venue in pursuit of the
prestigious crown, being contested for a seventh time.
Last
year, Greg Telfer (Prestwick St Cuthbert) took the title, 12 months
after Blairgowrie’s Bradley Neil, the current Scottish Boys champion,
was
the victor.
Neil
will fancy his chances of a repeat in 2013, with the Perthshire player
in perhaps the standout tee grouping at 9.58am. Neil is joined by
Bearsden’s
Ewen Ferguson, the British Boys champion, and the reigning Scottish
Youths and Scottish Stroke Play winner, Robert MacIntyre of
Glencruitten.
But
a host of other players will also fancy their chances in the East Neuk,
among them Niall McMullen from Lundin and Rory Franssen (Inverness) in
the first group at 8.30am.
Stuart
Easton (Irvine), Alan Waugh (Cowglen), Cameron Kirkwood (Bearsden) and
Murray Naysmith, the Paul Lawrie Foundation Junior Jug winner from
Marriott Dalmahoy, will also hope to contend.
David
Scott, Manager, The Duke’s, said: "The Duke's is thrilled to be
welcoming back the junior boys Champion of Champions, and the SGU.
“To have the finest young stars of tomorrow playing our course is an honour and we look forward to a good day of golf."
The event is played over 18 holes of straight medal play, with the Duke’s staging it for a fifth time.
