Duddingston'a David Miller has
joined golf’s exclusive “59 Club”. The 35-year-old produced the round
of his life in the Lochend Open at Craigentinny to achieve the rare feat
of beating 60.
“It was just one of those days,” admitted Miller, who recently won the Duddingston club championship.
Miller went out in 29 and started for home by picking up another shot before averting the only crisis of the round at the 11th to make par.
By the time he birdied the 14th to move to seven-under, word had spread about what was in the offing and a crowd gathered.
“After getting it to six-under after ten holes, I started to think that a 59 might be on the cards,” admitted Miller.
“At seven-under with three to play, I reckoned I probably needed to birdie the 16th, which I did. I knew then that I’d never have a better chance to break 60.
“At the par-3 17th, I produced a Phil Mickelson-style chip to four feet to save par, and by the time I got to the 18th green, there must have been 50-60 people out watching.”
Miller made par and signed off on 59, breaking the course record. “I think this feels more special than winning club championships or anything else I’ve achieved in the game,” he declared.
Miller has a handicap of +2 so his net score was 61!
