And Harry says he is looking to build on that victory and soon turn professional - but only when he feels is ready,
"I look back on 2012 and it was a massive year for me," Ellis told BBC South Today.
"In my progression as a golfing career, having that win in early August at the England amateur championships was a massive door opener for me.
"It's a lovely thing to have and hopefully it will stand for a long time.
"I've got a long way to go. I want to get better as quickly as possible but this game is about being patient."
Hampshire golfer Harry Ellis, still only 17, says he is targeting a place in the Great
Britain and Ireland team for September's Walker Cup, following his
breakthrough year in 2012.
Ellis knocked two years off six-time major winner
Nick Faldo's record to become the youngest winner of the English Amateur
Championship last year, when he was 16.
