PERTH PLAYER WINS CAMERON CORBETT VASE

DANIEL YOUNG with the Cameron Corbett  Vase at Haggs Castle Golf Club.

Perth player Daniel Young (Craigie Hill), home for the summer holidays from Lynn University, Bocan Raton in Florida, scored an impressive three-stroke win in the weather-reduced Cameron Corbett Vase SGU Order of Merit golf tournament at Haggs Castle Golf Club, Glasgow this evening (Sunday).
After the course was flooded on Saturday, the tournament was reduced from 72 to 36 holes with both rounds today (Sunday).
Young shot 68-65 for an 11 under par tally of 133, against the CSS of 72-71, to win by three shots from Alexander Culverwell (Dunbar) (69 67) and Paul Shields (Kirkhill) (66 70), both on 136.
Steven Rennie (Drumpellier) had a hole in one at the 11th in his first round during which he was four under par for the three short holes - 2 2 1. Funnily enough, if our information provider is correct, Rennie scored better in the afternoon when he had a 69, compared with his opening round of 74.

THOMAS BURLEY WINS ENGLISH MID-AM PLAY-OFF

NEWS RELEASE FROM ENGLAND GOLF
Thomas Burley copyright Tom Ward PhotographyThomas Burley is the English Mid Amateur champion. He lifted the title and the Logan Trophy after a dramatic two-hole playoff with defending champion Neill Williams in overcast conditions at Saunton in Devon.
The pair had tied on 216, three over par, over the West Course after Burley (image © Tom Ward) had romped through the field with a closing 67, while Williams finished with a level-par 71.
“I’m very surprised to have won,” said 41-year-old Burley. “I thought I was too far behind to have a chance but I played well in the final round, had five birdies and wasn’t in much trouble.”
On the first playoff hole, Burley seemed to be in the driving seat as Williams pulled his approach into rough on a bank beside the green. From there he found a bunker and finished with a bogey five. Burley’s second finished on the front fringe and it seemed just a formality to wrap up his victory. But he three-putted from around 30 feet to give Williams a second life.
Again at the 370-yard second, with the local fox looking on, Burley left himself with an even longer birdie putt with Williams on a down slope at the back of the green. But from there the Surrey man charged his third eight feet past the hole and made a second bogey.
However, although Burley left his ‘cricket pitch’ putt four feet short, he holed out for par to become champion.
“I thought I’d blown it after three-putting the first playoff hole,” added Burley. “Then at the second, my caddie said ‘don’t miss this one’ and I didn’t.
“I felt I had a chance of winning at the start of the week. But I thought I’d played myself out of it after shooting 74 and 75. Then I had a text from a friend saying ‘that’s not the Burley golf I know’. So I managed to get back in the groove today.”
Surrey-based Williams was philosophical about losing his grip on the title he won so well at Purdis Heath, Ipswich a year ago. He knew he needed to birdie the last two holes in normal play to win again and almost eagled the 17th. That birdie meant he needed another at the last but missed the green by a distance only to pitch on and hole from 25 feet to make the playoff.
After the drama of the extra two holes, he said: “On the second playoff hole I allowed myself to be distracted by the noise coming from players on the other course and hit the putt well past. But you don’t win much with two bogeys, do you?”
The Logan represents Burley’s first national title. A county golfer for Wiltshire but playing out of Burnham & Berrow in Somerset and living in Bristol, he won the West of England Match Play Championship in 2004 and now runs his own financial planning company.
He is a family man with four young children, who have yet to get the golfing bug. “I took my two oldest daughters to the driving range last weekend to hit a few balls so we’ll have to see how it works out,” he added.
Another Surrey man James Wallis closed with 73 to finish third on 217 with second round leader Ian Crowther, who closed with 74, while 2006 champion Martin Young from Hampshire matched Burley’s 67 for equal fifth on 219.

MARCEL SIEM WINS FRENCH OPEN FROM FRANCESCO MOLINARI

Marcel Siem held off a stunning final round charge from Francesco Molinari to claim his second European Tour title at the Alstom Open de France. Six behind overnight, Molinari double bogeyed the first but responded with nine birdies in a stunning 64 - the best round of the week at Le Golf National. However, the Italian’s magnificent display - underpinned by fabulous iron play in blustery conditions - ultimately proved in vain as Siem held his nerve down the stretch en route to a 67 that saw him finish one clear on eight under.
Siem, whose only previous win came at the 2004 dunhill championship, saved par at the first despite finding water from the tee and was able to avoid any dropped shots up until the 18th. He turned in 33 and added further birdies at the 14th and 15th to move ahead of Molinari, whose back nine 29 will live long in the memory of those who witnessed it. A closing bogey mattered little to Siem, who gains a place in The 141st Open Championship and becomes the third German to have triumphed at this event after Bernhard Langer and Martin Kaymer.
“I'm so happy. This means a lot to me,” said Siem upon receiving the trophy and a cheque for €525,000. “So many tournaments I kind of destroyed already this year. I was always up there, and I’m so happy that I really got it done in the end. It means so much to me to win after that long stretch. It's all about winning in the end and it puts so much pressure every time you don't win and people start talking, you will never win again and stuff like that, so it's very important for me.”
Siem admitted he had struggled to keep his emotions in check as he entered the notoriously difficult final four holes. “I was very nervous, I have to say, after 14 when I made the up and down out of the trap,” he added. The last stretch is one of the toughest stretches we have on Tour. In Cologne (at last month’s BMW International Open), I hit it in the water on seven, (when in the) last round I was leading. But I made great golf shots. I hit it close on 15, made a good shot on 16 that wouldn't drop and even 17, hit the flag. I stayed very calm. That was very nice.”
Despite being pipped to the title this week, Molinari was able to reflect on a staggering final round performance. “It's been just an unbelievable day really,” he said. “I had a really bad start, but two years ago when I finished second here, I doubled the first on the last day. From then on, it was just great golf. I had a couple of good breaks and finally a lot of putts going in the hole. I was in the moment, in the zone and I wasn't really counting the birdies. The game has been feeling well all week and everything was coming out perfect.”
Siem’s playing partner Henrik Stenson impressed on the inward nine, but, after making four birdies to reach seven under, the Swede hit trouble at the last and finished with a triple bogey. Home favourite Raphaël Jacquelin therefore claimed third spot on six under, with the English trio of David Lynn, Ian Poulter and David Howell a shot further back in fourth. Howell began the day as the joint leader with Denmark’s Anders Hansen, who went round in 75 to end the week on two under.
The 97th edition of the Alstom Open de France will be held at Le Golf National from July 4-7, 2013.

STEPHEN MCALLISTER FINISHES FOURTH WITH FINAL 65

From Michael Gibbons
Stephen McAllister fired a brilliant final round 65 to surge to a fourth place finish at the Senior Tour’s Bad Ragaz PGA Seniors Open.
The Paisley professional’s five under par effort matched the lowest round of the day of second placed Mark James as well as Sam Torrance, and saw the Scot finish fourth on eight under, four strokes behind American Tim Thelen.
McAllister looked to be falling out of the tournament as he reached the turn in level par, but a thrilling back nine of 30 saw him charge up the leaderboard and pocket £9,849 for his efforts at the Golf Club Bad Ragaz.
Torrance’s 65 saw him finish the week on five under, two shots behind eighth-placed Bill Longmuir but six ahead of Gordon Brand Jnr.
Sir Bob Charles and Gary Player continued to amaze the world of golf with their unbelievable levels of performance in Switzerland.
Charles’s first round 66 in Bad Ragaz saw the New Zealander better his age by a Senior Tour record of ten shots, while Player’s scores of 72-70-71 were a testament to the nine-time Major Champion’s fitness and competitive drive.
Charles added a 73 and a 72 to his remarkable first round to finish the week at one over par – two ahead of Player – and in a tie for 42nd place.
FULL REPORT
Tim Thelen’s Senior Tour dream continued with a second victory in just seven days at the Bad Ragaz PGA Seniors Open.
After holding off the challenge of Bernhard Langer, Peter Fowler, Barry Lane and Mark Mouland in Germany last week, the American resisted former Ryder Cup Captains Ian Woosnam and Mark James at the Golf Club Bad Ragaz to take home the €42,000 first prize.
“I could get used to this feeling,” said Thelen after signing for a final round of three under par 67 that gave him an 12 under total and secured a two-shot win over James, with Woosnam a further shot back in third.
“This is pretty amazing to win a second event in seven days. I played great again this week and to come out on top against another two of the game’s great players in Mark James and Ian Woosnam is very satisfying.”
Thelen took a three shot lead into the final round and looked to be cruising to victory with three birdies in his opening six holes. His cancelled out his bogey on the seventh by picking up a shot on the next hole, but dropped shots at the tenth and 12th allowed Woosnam and James to chance to mount a final challenge.
Former Masters Champion Woosnam birdied the 15th and 16th to briefly get within a shot of Thelen, but it was James who provided the more serious challenge, as the Englishman picked up three shots in the last four holes to pile the pressure on Thelen.
But like last week, Thelen responded with emphatic positivity, birdieing the 15th before a piercing seven iron to 15 feet enabled him to roll home a birdie two on the 17th to give him a two shot lead coming down the last.
“I looked at the leaderboard on the 16h and saw I had a two shot lead,” said Thelen. “Then Mark birdied the last to cut the lead to one, so that seven iron on 17 really was a fabulous shot. Making that birdie putt was a big moment too because it gave me a cushion to play the last.”
Thelen made a comfortable par on the 18th to put the seal on another memorable performance, before being congratulated by many of his fellow Senior Tour Members.
Among them, two genuine legends of the game – Sir Bob Charles and Gary Player – who continue to amaze the world of golf with their unbelievable levels of performance.
Thelen’s victories in last week’s Berenberg Bank Masters and now the Bad Ragaz PGA Seniors Open have propelled him to second place in the Order of Merit.
Roger Chapman leads the way with €304,453, thanks in the main to his brilliant victory in the US Senior PGA Championship, but Thelen’s amazing form has seen him climb from 21st to second in the space of seven days, with season’s earnings of €120,298.

TEENAGER PIRIE WINS CUMBRAE CUP BY NINE STROKES

Nineteen-year-old local member and club champion Craig Pirie yesterday won Millport Golf Club's annual 36-hole men's open for the Cumbrae Cup with a one under par total of 135 (67-68).
Pirie won by nine strokes from two former multiple winners of the event, Graham Bolton (Bute) and George Reynolds (Rothesay) who tied for second place on 144.
Conditions were testing on a course softened by a week of heavy showers and Joe Bell and his greenkeeping staff were commended by all participants for the fine condition of the greens.
Pirie thanked all who had travelled to support the event which was inaugurated in 1935 and has been won by such notables as Alastair Forsyth, Charlie Green, Gordon Murray and Barclay Howard. He also commented that he was delighted to finally win a trophy that didn't have his fathers name on it.
