KINTORE MEN WIN MAIL ON SUNDAY CLASSIC IN SPAIN
FROM THE ABERDEEN EVENING EXPRESS

Kintore Golf Club have beaten off the challenge of 1,500 other clubs to win the Mail on Sunday Classic in Spain.
The six lads from the Aberdeenshire club beat Farthingstone Hotel GC from Towcester, Northants in the semi-finals at Golf El Rompido in Andalucia before dumping Millbrook GC from Bedfordshire in the final which was the 11th round of the national competition.
Kintore captain Ally Thomson, who led the team of Kenny Bennet, Robbie Lawrence, Brian Gilbert, Alan Napier and Marty McGillivray to victory, said: "Winning the competition is a dream come true. We beat Farthingstone on the first play-off hole. They were all young guys with handicaps from scratch to three and they presumed we were there for the taking.
"To be fair we were always just behind in most of the matches, so the elation in getting a drawn match and then winning the play-off hole was superb."
Kintore, who booked their place in Spain after a dramatic countback at Manchester where heavy rain washed out the British finals, landed the spoils following some clever team selections by their skipper.
"The final against Millbrook was slightly different in that we were always slightly ahead in three of the matches but when we realised we had won we headed for cloud nine and are probably still only on our way down now.
"The reaction from everyone at the Kintore club has been incredible.
"For a village club to win a national event is astounding. Not only will it put Kintore on the golfing map. 1996 was the last time a Scottish club won the Mail on Sunday Men's Classic so we are all very proud of our achievement."
Kintore beat Tarland, Northern, Duff House Royal, Downfield, Inverurie, Blair Atholl, Crailg and Burnley to get to the last four in Spain.
