SCOT BEN COLLIER PIPPED IN BULGARIA PLAY-OFF

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Callander, Perthshire exile Ben Collier was pipped in a play-off for the PGAs of Europe championship at Pravets Golf Resort, Bulgaria today.
Collier, the left-handed 1990 Scottish boys match-play champion now a club pro based in Holland, tied with Portugal's Hugo Santos on 11-under-par 277 after running up a double bogey 5 at the short 17th in his final round.
The 18th was replayed as the first hole of a sudden-death play-off and Santos birdied it to Collier's par.
Ben's consolation prize was a cheque for £6,800 while Santos, who had lost his overnight lead with a triple bogey at the first but later birdie the 13th and 16th to get into the play-off, went off with the £10,000 jackpot prize.
Santos's rounds were 67, 69, 69 and 72; Collier's 67, 67, 73 and 70. The Scot had six birdies, two bogeys and a double bogey in his final round.
PGA Cup player Craig Matheson (Falkirk Tryst) finished on 289 with scores of 70, 75, 70 and 74. He earned £975.
A third Scot, Ian Taylor, finished on 300 with rounds of 78, 76, 74 and 72 and received £580.

FLEETWOOD AND HOEY SHARE HALFWAY LEAD IN DUNHILL LINKS

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
England's Tommy Fleetwood is on target to complete one of the most unlikely doubles in golf after claiming a share of the lead in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.
Fleetwood, pictured by Cal Carson Golf Agency, won the Kazakhstan Open earlier this month, with the first prize of €64,000 taking him top of The Challenge Tour rankings and securing his place on The European Tour for 2012.
But the 20 year old from Lancashire can win almost ten times that amount with victory at St Andrews on Sunday after storming into contention with a superb 63 at Kingsbarns.
Fleetwood, a former Walker Cup player and English Amateur Champion, carded nine birdies and no bogeys to finish 12 under par, sharing top spot on the leaderboard with Northern Ireland's Michael Hoey, who shot 66 at the same venue.
"It feels pretty good," Fleetwood said. "It's pretty unexpected to be honest. Just to get the invite and the experience of playing here is great.
"I didn't hit it very well yesterday but I holed good putts on the first three or four holes today and didn't really look back. I learn every time I play at the moment.
"The last couple of weeks I've had no pressure on me really. I know where I'm playing next year, which is great, and it's definitely given me confidence because there was a bit of thought of 'Can I win?' because I had been in there so many times.
"I finally got it done, so let's see if I can do it on the bigger stage now."
Asked about the prospect of battling some of the game's biggest names over the weekend - five of the world's top six are in the field - Fleetwood added: "It's pretty cool.
"I've watched it on TV for years and pretty much analyse everything they do, try to learn off them, and obviously my name is in pretty good company right now.
"Hopefully I can shoot a decent score at Carnoustie tomorrow and then play with somebody like Martin Kaymer or Lee Westwood. That would be really cool."
Hoey is another former Walker Cup player - he was on the winning side along with World Number One Luke Donald in 2001 - and is seeking his second European Tour win of the year this weekend.
"I've always enjoyed this pro-am format," the 32 year old said. "A couple of years ago I was tied for the lead after two rounds. It's slow, but it really takes your mind off stuff between shots."
Former Open Champion Louis Oosthuizen, who lifted The Claret Jug at St Andrews in 2010, is one off the lead after adding a 67 at Carnoustie to his opening 66 at Kingsbarns.
That means the 28 year old now has two rounds left over The Old Course to try to claim a second victory at The Home of Golf.
However, Oosthuizen will have his work cut out, with 25 players within five shots of the lead going into the final two rounds.
Former US Open Champion Graeme McDowell completed a second consecutive 67 to lie two shots back on ten under, alongside Australian Daniel Gaunt, Scotland's Marc Warren, Austria's Markus Brier and South African Jaco van Zyl.
Defending champion Martin Kaymer (67) is a shot further behind after dropping two shots in his last three holes at Carnoustie, with Lee Westwood, US Open Champion Rory McIlroy and former amateur star Tom Lewis all on seven under.
Westwood also endured a disappointing finish at Carnoustie, dropping shots at the 17th and 18th in his round of 69, while McIlroy drove into the Barry Burn on the 17th to drop his only shot of the day in a 67.
Donald, attempting to become the first man to top the money list on both sides of the Atlantic in the same season, looked set to be in contention until dropping four shots in the last four holes, including driving into the Barry Burn on the 18th to run up a double-bogey 6.

CALLUM TRAHAN RISES 540 PLACES IN WORLD AMATEUR RANKINGS

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com
Meldrum House Golf Club member Callum Trahan has risen 540 places in this week's R and A World Amateur Golf Rankings after finishing joint 32nd in the Canadian Professional Tour's autumn qualifying school at Burlington, Ontario.
Torphins-based Trahan, pictured, shot 77, 71, 68 and 74 for a two-over-par total of 290 which placed him 37th of 54. Only the leading seven gained playing rights for the Canadian Tour.
Trahan was 2693 in the World Rankings before his trip to Canada - and 2153 when he returned.
I have expounded on this website in the past that ruling pro golf bodies all over the world exploit the desire of young men (and women) to turn professional and play in qualifying schools.
The entrance fees are way over the top. Something like £1,500 for the 2011 European Tour School.
The Canadian Tour have carried this means to making money to a new height - they have not one but THREE qualifying schools a year.  And at each one they charge the entrant Canadian $2,500. What a rip-off!

LUKE DONALD'S NO THREE PUTTS RUN ENDS AT 440 GREENS

FROM THE GOLF.COM WEBSITE
By Paul Mahoney, Contributor to Golf Magazine
ST ANDREWS — Never mind the $800,000 on offer for the winner of the Dunhill Links Championship, Luke Donald had his mind fixed on greens not greenbacks during his first round at Kingsbarns. He teed off at the 10th with 434 consecutive holes without a single three-putt, the longest running streak in the game.
In an age when it feels like half the players on tour are converting to the belly putter in a desperate attempt to coax the ball into the hole, Donald's short flatstick has been rattling them in for seven tournaments over eight weeks, stretching back to the Canadian Open, the week after the Open at Royal St George's. A remarkable statistic in a sport obsessed with them.
Donald extended his magical touch on the greens all the way through his front nine and got to the seventh (his 16th) before disaster struck. Well OK, it wasn't THAT tragic, but his run of holes without a three-putt came to an end at 449. After lagging up from 70 feet, Donald was left with an eight-footer for par -- and missed.
"I was a little upset, yeah," Donald said with a wry smile after signing for a three-under-par 69. It's the little victories in golf, isn't, that we look for. I didn't want to miss. But 69 is not a bad score to start the week."
Pin a "Putting Stats Geek" Badge to your lapel if you knew that the new three-putt-avoidance champ is now, of all people, Sergio Garcia at 131 consecutive holes. And you thought he was supposed to be struggling with his putting.
Donald is tucked in behind a group of players leading at six under par. Among them is Louis Oosthuizen, who scorched Kingsbarns on a glorious Californian summer's day in Fife when the temperature sneaked above 70 degrees.
He clearly enjoyed getting back on a links course just seven miles along the coast from the Old Course, where he won the Open last year. He also sent out a clear message to Greg Norman, who chose not to pick him as a wild card for the Presidents Cup international team.
"I was not surprised," Oosthuizen said. "I would have done the same, picking two Australian players. I was more upset that I didn't make the team."
Maybe the Dunhill Links Championship is going to be the comeback tournament for 2010 major champions. U.S. Open champion Graeme McDowell was one shot further back after a first-round five under 67 while PGA champion Martin Kaymer is on four under par on a day when the stellar players all played Kingsbarns. Phil Mickelson, the 2010 Masters champ, probably should have made the trip.
Oosthuizen, McDowell and Kaymer will follow each other to Carnoustie for round two before playing at St. Andrews on Saturday and then -- if they make the cut -- a final round over the hallowed Old Course. McDowell has been fighting to recreate the mojo that helped him to be the star of the show at Pebble Beach and again at Celtic Manor during the Ryder Cup.
"Me and my caddie had to have a bit of a heart-to-heart about what we were doing and what needed to change," McDowell said. "It was a bit of soul-searching after the PGA."
He believes he has turned the corner.
"It feels good to go out there are score well," McDowell said. "I'm excited about the rest of the season and maybe achieve something out of what has been a frustrating year."
Colin Montgomerie hasn't won a major, but he's certainly majored in frustration on a golf course. So it was grinning Monty rather then grumpy Monty that bounced off his final green at Kingsbarns like Tigger. That's Tigger from "Winnie the Pooh," not Tiger from Jupiter, Florida. He is four under par along with Kaymer, Padraig Harrington and World No.2 Lee Westwood.
How appropriate for Montgomerie to see his name writ large on leaderboards in his homeland. The omens are good as well. He has been reunited with his amateur partner from 2005 when he won the tournament, two-time Academy Award winner Michael Douglas.
"He's a cancer survivor. That's what he calls himself," Montgomerie said.
"He did extremely well. It's great to see him back here and battling through."
(Monty's mother died of cancer and he campaigns for funds to build care homes in he rmemory).
A year ago this week, Montgomerie was in his pomp and Lord of the (Celtic) Manor at the Ryder Cup. He's back in the limelight once again at age 48.
Rory McIlroy had a low-key day by his standards with a two-under-par 70 playing with his father Gerry.
"Glad I had a good partner in my dad today!" McIlroy tweeted after his round. "He carried me for 11 holes before I eventually removed my head from my ass! Solid day in the end."
It was also a family affair for McIlroy's playing partner Dustin Johnson, who shot a one-under-par 71 with his brother Austin lugging his bag around the humps and hollows of Kingsbarns.
Johnson shared his thoughts for the first time about how he feels about his caddie Joe LaCava ditching him last Sunday for Tiger Woods.
"[LaCava] told me in the locker room after the Tour Championship," Johnson said. "Things happen. He's gotta do what he's gotta do. I'll be all right. I'll find me a caddie."
Johnson said that Tiger called him directly.
"I talked to Tiger. Everything's good. No hard feelings," he said. "Joe got offered the chance to go caddie for Tiger and he took it. You can't blame the guy. If he wanted to go caddie for him, that's fine with me. He can do whatever he wants."
Johnson said he wasn't angry or disappointed with how the whole affair had panned out.
"No, not at all. I like Joe," he said. "It's a business. And you've got to make decisions."

VEGAS AND McGIRT LEAD HOSPITALS FOR CHILDREN OPEN

FROM THE GOLF.COM WEBSITE
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Jhonattan Vegas and William McGirt shot career-best 8-under 63s on Thursday to share the first-round lead in the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open.
Vegas, the Venezuelan rookie who won the Bob Hope Classic in January for his first US PGA Tour title, had 10 birdies and two bogeys at TPC Summerlin in the first of four Fall Series events.
McGirt, also a US Tour rookie, had eight birdies in a bogey-free round.
Nathan Green and Charlie Wi were a stroke back.
Vegas, playing in hot afternoon conditions, birdied the par-4 15th and par-5 16th to reach 8 under, dropped a stroke on the par-3 17th and closed with a birdie on the par-4 18th to get back to 8 under.
"I feel like I'm hitting the ball absolutely great, which is something fun to do," Vegas said. "But the main thing was I made a lot of putts today.
"The two greens I missed today, I missed by probably half an inch. And just putting from the fringe I three-putted both times, which was kind of ironic. It's just golf. It is what it is. You have to stay positive, and the more positive you can be the better you'll be out there."
McGirt, playing in one of the last groups of the day, made seven birdies in a 10-hole stretch from Nos. 7 to 16, then parred the final two holes to match Vegas at 8 under.
"I really didn't set a number," McGirt said. "I was just trying to make as many birdies as I could. Thursday through Saturday, all you're doing is jockeying for position so that you can make a move on Sunday.
"I knew there was a 7 under posted (by Green) before I even teed off. So you knew it was out there, and it was just a matter of staying aggressive and making some putts."
Green, the leader until Vegas overtook him in the final hour, made seven birdies. The Australian won the 2009 Canadian Open for his lone US Tour title
"Just no mistakes, which was nice," Green said. "No bogeys, which was pretty unusual. "I didn't hit it overly close. It was just one of those steady rounds where I just managed to pick up; there's probably three or four sort of unexpected birdies out there."
Nick Watney, a two-time winner this year, was two strokes back at 65 along with Harrison Frazar, Tim Herron, Vaughn Taylor, Steve Flesch, Matt Jones, Rod Pampling, Derek Lamely, Blake Adams, Garrett Willis and Alex Cejka. Frazar and Lamely eagled the 524-yard 16th hole.
Jonathan Byrd, the winner last year when he made a hole-in-one on the fourth hole of a play-off with Martin Laird and Cameron Percy, opened with a 71.
This year, Martin Laird is T78 after an opening round of one-under-par 70.

DAVE HILL, THE MAN THEY COULDN'T GAG, DIES AT 74

JACKSON, Michigan (AP) -- Outspoken Dave Hill, a 13-time winner on the US PGA Tour who made three Ryder Cup appearances and won the 1969 Vardon Trophy for the US PGA Tour's llowest scoring average, has died. He was 74.
Hill died Tuesday in Jackson. He suffered from emphysema for several years, brother Mike Hill -- also a former PGA TOUR player -- told the Jackson (Mich.) Citizen Patriot.
Hill finished second in the 1970 U.S. Open at Hazeltine in Minnesota, making headlines for saying the course "lacked only 80 acres of corn and a few cows to be a good farm" and that architect Robert Trent Jones "had the blueprints upside down."
"What he said about Hazeltine was the absolute, honest to God truth," Mike Hill said. "Players like Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player sat in the locker room and laughed. They knew it was true, but because of them not wanting to be involved, they would never say it. He was opinionated and stubborn.
"If he felt he was seeing things that weren't right, he always spoke out. He used to say, if you don't like the answer, you shouldn't ask the question."
In 1969, Hill won three tournaments, finished second on the money list and earned his first Ryder Cup appearance in addition to taking the Vardon Trophy with a 70.34 scoring average.
"Having the best stroke average was the thing that gave him the most satisfaction," Mike Hill said. "His biggest disappointment was not winning the U.S. Open like he felt he should have."
Hill also won six times on the Champions (Seniors) Tour.
"He was Jackson golf, as far as I'm concerned," said Ron Beurmann, golf professional at the Country Club of Jackson. "You go anywhere in my world and tell somebody you're from Jackson, and nine of 10 people will ask you, `Isn't that where Dave and Mike Hill are from?'"
Hill is survived by son David and daughter Laura.

EDWARDS' HOPES TAKE A DIP IN PGA PRO CH/SHIP OF EUROPE

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE PGA
A visit to the the water guarding the signature hole at Pravets Golf Resort and Spa, Bulgaria, looks to have cost Simon Edwards the chance of winning the UniCredit PGA Professional Championship of Europe.
Edwards, who is representing Wales in the event, looked set to mount a serious challenge to pacesetter Hugo Santos after 16 holes of the third round.
At that stage he was two strokes behind the Portugese and four-under-par for his round.
However, his tee shot at the par three 17th ricocheted off one of the boulders flanking the island green and into the water.
Edwards, who had to settle for a double bogey and two-under-par round of 70, said: “I was going well until the 17th when the ball caught a gust of wind and went into the hazard. Nevertheless, I’d play the same shot again.”
Edwards reckons that setback has cost him the chance of overhauling Santos and added: “At nine-under, I’d be looking at him. But not at seven-under - that’s probably too much ground to make up.”
Santos, meanwhile, posted his third successive sub-par round to remain on course to claim the €10,000 winner’s cheque.
He carded a three-under-par round of 69 to post a three-round total of 11-under and go two strokes clear of the field.
And, as on day one, Santos’ latest round over the new and much-acclaimed Peter Harradine-designed course was bogey-free.
Such has been his consistency, he has carded just one bogey – at the par four sixth in the second round.
Santos attributes that to his accuracy off the tee and said: “I didn’t miss a fairway today – that’s essential if you’re going to have a good round.”
He will looking to maintain that metronomic driving to withstand the expected challenge from his nearest pursuers, Holland-based Britons Ben Collier and Ralph Miller.
The left-handed Collier, a former Scottish boys' match-play champion, is two adrift after posting a one-over-par 73, and Miller a further shot behind following a one-under round of 71
Collier, the overnight leader who recovered from a shaky start, said: “I’m certainly not out of it.”
His task could have been even harder had he not finished the round with a flourish after carding three bogeys in the first six holes.
Another followed at the 11th but birdies at the 13th and 17th revived his hopes of victory.
PGA Cup player Craig Matheson (Falkirk Tryst) is in joint seventh place on 214 after scores of 70, 75 and 70.

OOSTUIZEN BACK IN FIFE AND BACK IN A SHARE OF THE LEAD

St ANDREWS – It was not the Old Course, but it was near enough, as South Africa’s Louis Oosthuizen revived memories of his dazzling Open Championship victory 14 months ago by taking a share of the first-round lead in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.
At Kingsbarns, 20 minutes down the road from the setting for his greatest triumph in July 2010, Oosthuizen shot a six-under-par 66, along with Austria’s Markus Brier, Spain’s Rafael Cabrera-Bello and Northern Ireland’s Michael Hoey to lead by one from a group of six players which includes former US Open champion Graeme McDowell.
Queuing up a further shot back on 68 are some of the big names of golf, including world No 2 Lee Westwood, defending champion Martin Kaymer, Scottish hero Colin Montgomerie, three-time major championship winner Padraig Harrington and talented English youngster Tom Lewis, who made such an impact as an amateur in the Open Championship at Royal St George’s and is playing in only his second professional event.
The tournament, conceived as a celebration of links golf, is played over three of the world’s best known and respected links courses - the Old Course at St Andrews, the Championship Course at Carnoustie and the highly regarded Kingsbarns Golf Links.
On a day made for good scoring with a hot sun, it was the positive golf of Oosthuizen which caught the eye. His 66 included seven birdies and just one bogey and he said that returning to St Andrews had given him inspiration. “There's nothing better than holding the Claret Jug at St. Andrews. Hopefully by the end of the week, it will just be a different trophy. It was so nice to come back and experience everything again.”
He is playing with his brother Rikus in the Alfred Dunhill Links Team Championship and said: “It was good fun playing a practice round at St Andrews yesterday with my brother. I showed him where some of my shots ended up (during the Open) and things like that. It's a nice, relaxing week and I'm glad that he's here with me. This is a great event.”
Michael Hoey catapulted himself into a share of the lead with a prodigious drive onto the 18th green at the Old Course before holing a 40-foot putt for an eagle 2. He said:
“We knew it was in range because it was downwind and I hit a great drive. I couldn’t have got it any further. I was thinking just hit the putt with good pace and it came off perfect and tracked all the way.”
His Northern Ireland compatriot Graeme McDowell, playing at Kingsbarns, had a disappointing bogey 6 at the 12th in his 67, but he was generally happy with his position and with his day. He said:
“It's nice to be back. It’s good to catch up with some of the lads. I miss them when I'm out there in the States. I missed the camaraderie here on the European Tour. It was good playing alongside Simon Dyson today.”
Tom Lewis could have shared the lead in just his second professional event, but for an agonising double bogey 7 on his last hole, the 10th, at Kingsbarns. Lewis, just 20, said he looked on it as a learning experience.
“The standard's good. If I play well, like I showed for 17 holes, you can be right at the top of the leaderboard, but it shows that if you make a mistake, you can drop a lot. I'm disappointed in my finish, but four under is not going to leave me too far behind the leader. So hopefully I can shoot a good score tomorrow,” he said.
Partnering the professionals are an enthusiastic group of talented amateur golfers, who compete for the Alfred Dunhill Links Team Championship.
Celebrities from the world of entertainment playing this year include film and TV stars Michael Douglas, Andy Garcia, Hugh Grant and John O’Hurley. Also taking part are rock music legends Don Felder of the Eagles, Huey Lewis and Bon J ovi drummer Tico Torres, plus popular radio presenter Chris Evans.
A quartet of Britain’s sporting knights – Sir Ian Botham, Sir Bobby Charlton, Sir Matthew Pinsent and Sir Steve Redgrave - lead a locker room full of sporting heroes, including Dutch football legends Johan Cruyff and Ruud Gullit, former England player Jamie Redknapp and Scottish defender Alan Hansen.
A strong team of cricketers have teed up this week. In addition to Sir Ian Botham, there is current England captain Andrew Strauss and former captain Michael Vaughan, England Test players Allan Lamb and Mark Nicholas, plus Steve Waugh and Shane Warne of Australia.
The immensely popular former British tennis No 1 Tim Henman is back, along with rugby giant Morné du Plessis and Austrian downhill ski legend Franz Klammer.
The first round leaders in the Team Championship on 11-under-par are French pro Romain Wattel, Don St Pierre and Michael Hoey and William Farish junior. Both pairings played on the Old Course.
St Pierre, an importer of wine into China, said: “I have a great partner, Romain was fantastic. He’s French so with me being in the wine business we had a lot to talk about. I hit some great shots and just kept it together. I didn’t get too nervous and I had a great local caddie too.
"I practised on the Old Course yesterday. The day before was the first day I’d ever played in Scotland when I played at Kingsbarns, so I’m a real rookie to this whole thing.
"Overall the single highlight was the Road Hole. I hit a good drive. I pushed my second shot, but I hit a really good putt off the side of the green and I made a five footer for par.”
Rock star Huey Lewis and Simon Dyson are two shots behind. Lewis said:
“I’ve not played with Simon before. He’s a lovely guy with a great game and he showed today why he’s on course to become a Ryder Cup player next year. My own game? Well, I played right handed.”
Philip Kaymer, who is on the bag of his father Horst Kaymer who is playing with his other son, defending champion Martin Kaymer, is on six-under-par. He said:
“I thoroughly enjoyed today. It is obviously very nice for him to be playing with Martin in the team competition. I myself played in this event in 2008, so it is nice for my father to have a chance to play as well and he played OK today. Martin and I finished 12th when we played together so he has a bit of a target to aim for.”
Former Australian cricketer Shane Warne played in one of the liveliest groups of the day, partnering Peter O’Malley, and sharing a fou-rball with 1995 Open champion John Daly and Sir Ian Botham. Finishing on two-under-par, he said: “We had a great four-ball. I’m very good friends with all three of the guys and have known John for 16 years. I’ve played with Beefy [Ian Botham] before and my good friend Peter O’Malley. It was great fun as always. Peter played extremely well o n the back nine. As always, we all probably left a few shots out there.”

CARLY BOOTH CADDIES FOR

D J SPOONEY AT CARNOUSTIE
CARNOUSTIE - Perthshire Ladies European Tour prospect Carly Booth ditched her clubs for a golf bag today as she took up caddieing duties for radio presenter D J Spooney in the first round of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship at Carnoustie.
When the radio presenter's caddie pulled out, the 19-year-old former Curtis Cup amateur from Comrie  - who made her debut on the European Tour last season - offered to step into the breach.
Carly said: "I've known Spooney for a couple of years and this year we did the Golf Live event together. We're always in contact through Twitter. I'm a member at Carnoustie and I thought I might be a bit of a help on the bag. When Spooney's other caddie dropped out, I was his replacement.
"It was great to see all the players and be part of the Dunhill this week. Caddieing is very different, but I don't mind it. I'm learning, so I'll be much better tomorrow."
Spooney, whose real name is Johnathan Joseph, partnered rookie professional Jack Senior, who played in the recent Walker Cup-winning team, in the first round, who posted a superb three-under par round of 69.
He said: "It was good, we played well. Jack, in his first professional tournament, played brilliant. He has a very big future.
"Everyone says Carnoustie is the hardest, but it's a beautiful course, a very traditional links and it's always a joy to play. If you get to play it in weather like this, then shooting six under is a bonus.
"I have played in the Dunhill a few times and many other Pro-Ams. But this is the biggest and best Pro-Am in the world. I was a tad nervous hitting my first tee shot off the tenth today, but there's no place I'd rather be."

NIKE PROMOTE ELLON MAN ANGUS MOIR TO GENERAL MANAGER

Aberdeenshire-born former Scottish amateur champion Angus Moir is to become Nike Golf's general manager for their Europe, Middle East and Africa
operation on December 1.
Moir, who hails from Ellon, has been Nike Golf’s EMEA sales director for almost three years. He will take over this key position within the company from Stan Grissinger, who has been appointed to the new role of Director of Nike Golf International Business Development.
Moir, 48, who joined Nike Golf in February 2009, has quickly made a significant impact on the company, working with the sales teams across the developing regions to grow both the revenue and profitability of the business across all product categories during that period.
Cindy Davis, Nike Golf’s president said: “While the EMEA team will no doubt miss Stan’s leadership, we are very fortunate to have an extraordinarily talented team member in Angus Moir to take over his responsibilities. Over the last two years he has done an outstanding job providing strong functional leadership and growing Nike Golf’s revenue, profitability and market share across the EMEA marketplace.”
Moir has over 20 years’ experience in the golf industry, having previous held several senior management roles including business director of Europe and global business director during a 17-year career with Wilson Sporting Goods.
Moir will be based at Nike Golf’s European headquarters in Hilversum in Holland, where he will continue the evolution of Nike Golf’s strengthening market position in the critical UK marketplace, and accelerating distribution, market share and revenue growth throughout the EMEA region.
Moir went to university in Texas, finding success in both college-level tournaments and business management studies. Winner of the Scottish Amateur Championship in 1984, the former assistant club professional at Cruden Bay turned his attentions to the business of golf soon after, and has never looked back since deciding to switch to selling, rather than hitting, clubs for a living.
“I am very excited to be taking on this role,” said Moir of his appointment. “I have enjoyed my time at Nike Golf immensely over the last two years, working with some great people and some great products, and am really looking forward to the challenges ahead and working with a team of talented individuals that are as passionate and committed to the game as they are to the Nike brand.”

STEVE STRICKER HAS A HERNIATED DISK IN HIS NECK

FROM THE GOLF.COM WEBSITE
CLEVELAND (AP) — Tests have confirmed that Steve Stricker has a herniated disk in his neck. The next step for the highest-ranked American golfer is figuring out what to do about it.

Stricker's agent at IMG, Jon Heaton, said today that an MRI confirmed the neck injury. He says Stricker is not feeling any pain, although he is weak in his left arm.
He says Stricker is consulting specialists and evaluating treatment options.
Still to be decided is whether Stricker is fit enough to play Nov. 17-20 in the Presidents Cup. U.S. captain Fred Couples has said if Stricker can't play, he would be replaced by US PGA champion Keegan Bradley.

DARREN CLARKE ADMITS HE'S FINDING IT HARD TO BE MOTIVATED

FROM THE BBC SPORT WEBSITE
Open winner Darren Clarke has admitted he is finding it hard to motivate himself following his victory at Royal St George's in July.
The 43-year-old, whose Open win was his maiden major title, is playing in this week's Dunhill Links Championship at St Andrews, Carnoustie and Kingsbarns.
"I've done what I've always wanted - got to the top of the mountain," said Clarke. "What else can compare to it?
"Ask anybody who's achieved their lifetime goal, they'll probably tell you 'how do you keep going and going?'"
The Ulsterman added: "What else is there to do? I've managed to win the tournament I've wanted to win from when I first started playing golf, the biggest and best tournament in the world.
"My difficulty since has been assessing and fixing some goals
"What else is there to do? Yes, they (major championships) are all very important, but to me The Open is the oldest, the biggest, the best there is.
"I've no idea how people like [Olympic five-times gold medallist rower] Steve Redgrave do it, keep going for more."
Clarke's success in Sandwich two-and-a-half months ago, which saw him hold off the challenge of American duo Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson to become the first UK winner since Paul Lawrie in 1999, came in his 20th appearance in the famous tournament.
Since winning the Open, Clarke has played in four events, with his best performance coming at the European Masters in Switzerland when he finished five under to tie for 35th. He has twice failed to make the cut, at the Irish Open and the US PGA Championship.
However, with a large haul of points available on offer this weekend in the event played with an amateur partner over three courses - St Andrews, Carnoustie and Kingsbarns - Clarke sees this as an opportunity to achieve another of his goals: to play in a sixth Ryder Cup.
"We're playing for an awful lot of prize money this week, Ryder Cup points and world ranking points," he said. "I would dearly love to make the [Ryder Cup] team next year and I want to give myself every chance I can to do that."

ALASDAIR (14) GETS DREAM PLACE IN ALFRED DUNHILL LINKS FIELD
By BILL SHAWA golfing dream has come true for a 14 year old student of St Leonard’s High School in St Andrews. Alasdair McDougall will join the likes of Darren Clarke, Colin Montgomerie, Rory McIlroy and Lee Westwood after being added to the draw as a late-entry amateur at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship which tees off tomorrow morning.
McDougall, who hails from Drumoig near St Andrews, is a promising young golfer who won the St Andrews Links Junior Golf Association (SALJGA) Order of Merit this year. He will tee off on the Old Course at 10.50am tomorrow in the same group as SALJGA honorary president Paul Lawrie and partnering Dutch professional Joost Luiten.
“It is a fantastic opportunity for me,” he said. “I love playing golf and the chance to play in the same event as some of my heroes is just unbelievable. The Dunhill is a great event and it doesn’t get any better than playing in a championship on The Old Course. It will be a little nerve-wracking but I am really looking forward to it.”
Alasdair was born in Carlisle but moved to Drumoig with his family six years ago. Attending school in St Andrews, Alasdair immediately joined SALJGA and quickly fell in love with the game. Two years ago his handicap was 13 but he is now playing off three.
Earlier this year he represented Scotland in the under-16 quadrangular internationals playing against Ireland, the Netherlands, Italy and Wales. Alasdair is also part of the national Scottish Golf Union squad coached by Steve North, Director of Instruction at St Andrews Links Golf Academy.
Alasdair’s father Duncan said, “He really took to golf after moving St Andrews and I don’t think there could have been a better place for him to learn the game. The coaching and facilities have been excellent for him. At the moment he is really enjoying his golf and playing in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship will be such a great experience.”

Stephen Gray wins after Scott Henderson bogey-bogey finish at Brora

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com
Stephen Gray scored his ninth win of the Tartan Tour season when he collected first prize of £900 in the inaugural Northern Links Callaway Challenge over the Tain and Brora Golf Club courses.
But the Hayston man would have been demoted to second place had Scott Henderson been able to par the last two holes in the second and final round at Brora today.
Gray, playing ahead of Henderson, had finished with a three-under-par 66 for a total of six-under-par 133 following his three-under 67 at Tain on Tuesday.
So the Kings Links man, a former Northern Open champion and past European Tour Rookie of the Year knew what he had to do after birdieing the first, fourth, fifth, seventh, ninth and 10th with only bogeys at the second and third taking the edge off that superlative run.
But Henderson, after six pars on the trot, bogeyed the 17th and then also bogeyed the 18th for a 67, a repeat of his first-day score, to finish second on 134, a shot behind winner Gray.
At 17th the Aberdonian drove into an adjacent second-hole fairway bunker and at the 18th he put his tee shot onto a hill to the right of the green. Henderson played a good recovery but missed the par putt of 10 feet that would have forced a play-off.
It has to be said that Scott's putting let him down over the final nine holes. He missed chances on the 13th, 14th and 16th greens
Stephen Gray's top of the table earnings now amount to £32,941. What a season the Hayston man has had!
Henderson's consolation prize was a cheque for £710.
Welshman Gareth Wright from West Linton collected £630 for a third place finish in which he and fourth-placed David Patrick (Elie Sports Centre) jointly set a professional course record of four-under-par 65.
Amateur Jimmy Miller - the man who beat American ace Johnny Miller in a singles match when the Brigham Young University golf team toured the North -holds the amateur course record of 61, set in 1976.
Wright's rounds were 70 and 65 for 135, former Walker Cup man Patrick 71 and 65 for 136. Patrick earned £560.

ZANE SCOTLAND WINS, GREG NICOLSON T9 ON PRO DEBUT

Shaikh Fahim bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Arab Golf Federation, presenting the winner’s trophy to Zane Scotland as Mohamed Juma Buamaim, Chairman of the MENA Golf Tour, looks on at Saadiyat Beach Golf Club today.

NEWS RELEASE ISSUE BY THE MENA (Middle East-North Africa) GOLF TOUR
ABU DHABI - Zane Scotland staged a tremendous charge to win the Abu Dhabi Golf Citizen Open, the first event on the MENA Golf Tour, at Saadiyat Beach Golf Club today.
Starting the day two shots off the pace, the former European Tour player showed flashes of brilliance, closing with a blazing 67 - the tournament's best round -- to go to eight under par 208 for the $50,000 54-hole event.
Zane, for whom a glittering tour pro future was predicted early in his career, beat the overnight leader and hot favourite Yasin Ali by one shot.
Yasin, who carded a final-round 70, needed a par on the 18th to force a play-off, but agonisingly three-putted for a bogey from the edge of the green to hand Scotland a victory he will cherish for a long time to come.
Morocco's Younes El Hassani birdied the last to finish third on five under 211. Shaikh Fahim bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Arab Golf Federation, presented the trophy and the winner's cheque for $9,000 to Scotland in the presence of Mohamed Juma Buamaim, chairman of the MENA Golf Tour.
Just when it appeared Yasin was on cruise control, Zane Scotland produced something special - a birdie on the 14 which was followed by an eagle on the 15th - to close the gap on the leader.
A bogey on the 16th threatened to undermine Zane's brilliant efforts, but he held his nerve and picked a crucial shot on the 17th before walking off with a new course record.
"I knew I was in with a chance, and the experience of playing on the European and Asian Tours did come handy," said Scotland. "The key to winning was that birdie and eagle finish on the 14th and 15th. I have played this course before and hence had a bit of local knowledge too - and that helped me in the end.
"I have been playing really well these days and know how to deal with pressure. Yasin is quite an experienced player and I have a lot of respect for him. We all enjoyed competing in this tournament.
"I have played in Europe and Asia and can tell from my experience that this tour is up there with the best. I would like to thank the Shaikh Maktoum Golf Foundation for their initiative in organizing the Tour. The competition was really intense. The players from Morocco and Pakistan, in particular, are really good. They strike the ball as well as anybody," said Scotland who is associated with Yas Links Golf Club.
A steady Yasin required a birdie on the closing hole to clinch the issue, but three-putted for bogey.
"Frankly, I didn't know whether I needed a birdie or a par. But this is no excuse. I was on the green and should have parred the 18th, but that didn't happen. I pushed it a bit to the right from about five feet.
"The end result notwithstanding, I enjoyed playing in this tournament. Everything about it was just perfect," said the Englishman.
Morocco's El Hassani was equally pleased with his overall efforts. "I should have finished better, but then this is golf, you have to be very consistent all days if you aim to seal a victory. I played good, but not good enough to win," said El Hassani, who closed with a 71.
Edinburgh's Greg Nicolson, who turned professional on the eve of the tournament and had a hole in one during his second round, finished an encouraging joint ninth on his debut in the paid ranks. He had scores of 77, 70 and 71 for two-over-par 218 to earn a cheque for $950 - hopefully the first of many.
Greg is staying out there in Abu Dhabi to playing the four MENA tour events - and he is looking forward to playing with the experienced Scot, Ross Bain, next week at Ras al Kaima
Morocco's Ahmed Marjan followed his back-to-back 76 with a solid 70 to emerge as the leading amateur.
The next event on the MENA Golf Tour, the Ras Al Khaimah Classic, will be held at the Tower Links Golf Club from Monday.

FROM THE GOLF.COM WEBSITE
Turns out that sudden-death play-off Bill Haas won at East Lake, Atlanta on Sunday  was worth more than $11.44 million. It earned him a spot in the Presidents Cup.
US team captain Fred Couples, pictured, has used his two picks on Tiger Woods and Haas, who won the Tour Championship for his first win of the year.
Couples took Haas, the son of vice captain Jay Haas, over Keegan Bradley, whose two wins this year include the US PGA Championship.
International team captain Greg Norman took Robert Allenby and Aaron Baddeley, both of whom grew up in Melbourne, the venue for the Presidents Cup match.
He said Allenby was an "automatic pick" because of his long-time success at Royal Melbourne, while Baddeley made it an easier choice when he tied for third at the Tour Championship.
"Bill Haas knew he had to win last week, and he did it," Couples said. "I could not leave him off the team after that. When a guy knows that second place ... and he'll tell you, second place isn't good enough. And he understood that."
He said if Haas had lost the play-off at East Lake and Bradley had finished fourth or fifth - he wound up tied for 11th - then Bradley would have been the pick.
Couples said if Steve Stricker cannot play because of an injury, then Bradley would be chosen to replace him. Stricker had an MRI on Tuesday because of weakness in his left arm, although results were not immediately disclosed.
Woods was announced as a pick five weeks ago. Couples thought it was important to let the rest of the Americans know there would be only one open spot after qualifying ended.
Woods, who missed most of the summer with left leg injuries, did not return until August and played only two tournaments, missing the cut in the US PGA Championship.
Tiger is playing next week at the Frys.com Open, and will play in the Australian Open the week before the matches.
The Presidents Cup is Nov. 17-20 at Royal Melbourne.
"Things are going great," Woods said. "We're practising very hard up at The Medalist, and I'm playing as much as I possibly can, something that I hadn't done all summer because I hadn't been cleared to do it.
"I'm really looking forward to getting my game rounded for The Presidents Cup."
Couples also considered Brandt Snedeker, who finished 11th in the U.S. standings.
"Congrats to Bill Haas and Tiger Woods. They deserve the picks. Although I'm very disappointed, I've very happy to have been considered. GO USA," Bradley said on Twitter.
Bradley becomes the first American to win a major and be left off a team in the same year since (British) Open champion Todd Hamilton was not chosen for the 2004 US Ryder Cup team.
For the Presidents Cup, Ben Curtis (British Open) and Shaun Micheel (PGA) were left off the 2003 team. That was their only win that year. Bradley, a 25-year-old rookie, has also won the Byron Nelson Championship.
Couples said he spoke to Bradley for 45 minutes on the phone to explain his decision.
"I'm not one to say, 'Hey, you're going to be on plenty of teams.' I wouldn't want to hear that," Couples said. "I know he's a young player. I laid it out on the line and told him for really three or four weeks now where everyone stood.
"I just felt like in this instance, Bill Haas has played two years, never been outside the top 12 position."
Haas has won three times over the past two years.
The rest of the American team that qualified two weeks ago were Stricker, Matt Kuchar, Dustin Johnson, Bubba Watson, Nick Watney, Hunter Mahan, Phil Mickelson, Jim Furyk, Webb Simpson and David Toms.
It will be the first team competition for Haas, Watney and Simpson.
Allenby and Baddeley give the International team - comprised of players from everywhere but the United States and Europe - five Australians for the matches at Royal Melbourne. It's the fifth time since the Presidents Cup began that the International side has had five Aussies.
Allenby missed the '98 matches at Royal Melbourne because he was just recovering from a near-fatal car accident and did not qualify.
It will be his sixth team, and by far the most important.
"Going down to Melbourne and playing at Royal Melbourne is probably one of the biggest highlights of my career," Allenby said.
Norman referred to him as an "automatic pick" because Allenby plays his best golf Down Under, winning the Australian Masters, Australian Open and the Australian PGA in the same year.
Baddeley was a more difficult choice, especially after John Senden of Australia was runner-up in the final qualifying event outside Chicago two weeks ago. Baddeley finished one shot out of the playoff at the Tour Championship, while Senden finished 25th.
"Knowing that we are playing in the backyard of Australia, I wanted to hopefully load up on the team with as many Aussies as I possibly could," Norman said.
He said he put Baddeley and Senden on notice going into the Tour Championship.
"Whoever played the best at the Tour Championship would obviously get the final nod," Norman said.
The 10 who qualified for the International team are:
Adam Scott, Jason Day, Charl Schwartzel, Ernie Els, K.J. Choi, K.T. Kim, Ryo Ishikawa, Y.E. Yang, Geoff Ogilvy and Retief Goosen.
Norman took Baddeley over Senden, former (British) Open champion Louis Oosthuizen and Vijay Singh, who was the only player to have competed in all eight Presidents Cup matches
