Scottish boys' championship down to lst 32

Dramatic Afternoon as Sun Shines on West Kilbride

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE SCOTTISH GOLF UNION
From ROSS DUNCAN
The glorious weather on the Ayrshire coast was matched by some stunning golf as the Scottish Boys Championship moved towards the last 32 stage at West Kilbride on day three.
Highlight of the day was Andrew Borg’s spectacular holed wedge for eagle at the final hole to knock out Fraser Thain (West Linton) in a dramatic finale to their match. The 17-year-old Elmwood College golf student, who home club is Penwortham in Lancashire, was two up with four to play before Thain birdied 15 and 16 to level the match. The next hole was halved in pars and with Thain just 10 feet away with his approach shot, Borg landed his 96-yard wedge shot in the hole to clinch a memorable victory.
Borg will now face Dumfries & County’s Liam Johnston for a place in the last sixteen after he continued his impressive progress with a 4&3 win over Grange’s Callum McKay.
There was drama too in the match between Scottish Boys Stroke Play champion Jack McDonald and his opponent Bradley Neil, the reigning national U14s champion. Neil sank a superb 35-foot putt for birdie on the 18th green to take the match into extra holes, before McDonald conjured up a magnificent up and down from off the second green to keep the match alive.
The 17-year-old from Kilmarnock then hit a glorious 60-yeard approach at the third extra hole to set up a winning birdie and maintain his chances of the Scottish Boys double.

Euan Scott (St Andrews) was three down after five holes in his match against Blair McDonald but rallied to win five holes in a row and set up a 3&2 victory, to book his place in the last 32. The 14-year-old Madras College Student, who will captain the Scotland U16s side in The Netherlands next week, attributed his new found length off the tee to the Scottish Institute of Sport strength and conditioning programme:

Angus Carrick, son of former Scottish Amateur Champion David, is also through to the fourth round after a 3&2 win over Dollar’s Gary Chalmers with Ian Redford, former national U16s champion, continuing his good progress with a 3&2 win over Powfoot’s Scott Wightman.
