AT BARCELONA SECURES
SKY TV COVERAGE DEAL
The inaugural European Father and Son Golf Championship will be shown on Sky Sports TV after organisers of this month’s tournament reached an agreement with the satellite broadcasters.
Tournament director Tony Marsden has signed a contract for cameras to be present throughout the course of the 54-hole competition, which is being staged on Spain’s Costa Dorada at Greg Norman’s new North Course at PortAventura Golf Resort from October 28 until November 2.
Fifty teams from across the UK, Ireland and Europe are set to compete for the chance to be crowned the first-ever European Father and Son champions.
A four-man film crew will be present to film interviews and all the key moments on the course before a programme on the event is shown on Sky Sports next month.
"We’re thrilled to have secured a deal with Sky for a programme to be made on the event," said Marsden."Sky are one of the leading sports broadcast providers not just in Europe but across the world and having them involved can only help raise the profile of the tournament."
Competitors from the UK and Ireland will be joined by pairs from Sweden, Finland and Germany in PortAventura for the tournament, which is open to any amateur and professional father and son pairings with no age restrictions.
And there will be no shortage of expertise on display at the Spanish championship golf resort with the event having attracted a quality field including professionals, golf club secretaries, golf press, juniors and amateurs.
Norman’s North Course, part of the famous PortAventura theme park located outside of Barcelona, opened this summer and, measuring around 6,100 metres with a par 70, is a challenge for all levels of golfers.
With numerous lakes and strategically-placed bunkers to add to the natural wetlands, a combination of strategy, distance and precision is required to navigate your way safely around the course - particularly on the closing hole where water comes into play with every shot.
Marsden added: "We have had an excellent response after we decided to launch the competition and are delighted at the high-quality international field we have attracted.
"PortAventura is an ideal location to hold our first event and it’s fantastic for the competitors to be able to play one of Greg Norman’s newest courses. The competition promises to be a great spectacle for everyone, both players and their families who are coming along, and we’re looking forward to it being the first of many."
The format of the new tournament will be two-ball, better ball Stableford with competitors playing off threequarter handicaps.
In addition, there will also be a fun individual Stableford competition on the practice day in support of the event’s official charity The Lily Foundation, which funds research into finding a cure for Mitochondrial Disease and other metabolic disorders.
As well as playing four rounds of golf on the North Course, competitors, friends and family will also have the chance to enjoy the fun-packed beach town of Salou, which is right on the doorstep.
Salou boasts a wide variety of shops, restaurants, bars and clubs making it the perfect place to unwind after a hard day on the fairways.
