SCOTS SURVIVORS AT RAIN-HIT LA CALA
Only Paul Doherty and Graham Gordon of the seven Scots in the field survived the cut at one-under-par 71 in the rain-reduced Ivobank PGA EuroPro Tour Ladbrokescasino-com Masters at La Cala Resort, Malaga on the Spain's Costa del Sol today.
Doherty shot a 67 to be two behind the triple joint leaders, Daniel Brooks, Jason Kelly and Adam Frayne.
Graham Gordon had a creditable 69. But it was goodbye to Elliot Saltman (73), Mark Kerr (74), Jack Doherty (74), Graeme Brown (74) and Barry Hume (76).
This is the final event before the top 60 in the PGA EuroPro Tour Order of Merit to to Les Bordes in France for the Tour Championship.
Former Scottish boys' match-play champion Paul Doherty started on the back nine and was three under before a double bogey on 17 knocked him back a bit, but four birdies on the front nine coming in means he is right in the mix for the final round. Doherty is meantime 70th in the Order of Merit so he should be able to improve into the top 60.
Other Scots' OOM placings coming into this tournament were:
13th Eliot Saltman, 17th Lorne Kelly, 18th Barry Hume, 28th Graham Gordon, 39th Graeme Brown, 47th Jack Doherty, 52nd Andrew Oldcorn, 53rd Calum Nicoll, 55th Mark Kerr, 103rd Neil Mitchell, 123rd Freddy Valenti.
As well as the race to make the Top 60, this is a key event at the very top of the Order of Merit and the door has been opened with five of the top ten missing the cut. Money list leader Noel Fox, fourth placed Lloyd Kennedy and sixth spot Daniel Gaunt all missed the cut by a stroke at level par, while second placed Dale Marmion (Eaton) had a day to forget after shooting 82 and Jamie Harris (Nevill) will not be able to make ground from eighth place after a 76.
