Grant Carnie pipped in
play-off at Babson Park,
Florida by Englishman
Grant Carnie from Ellon, a junior (third-year) student at Brevard College, North Carolina, was beaten in a play-off for the 15th annual Webber Intercollegiate golf championship at Babson Park, Florida this week.
Grant, pictured right by Cal Carson Golf Agency, had tied on two-under-par 214 with Englishman Craig Isabel (Webber University) from Stanford-le-Hope after 54 holes over the par-72, 6,861yd course. Carnie had rounds of 74, 69 and 71 to Isabel's 71, 68 and 75.
Carnie could have won the title at the first extra hole. He had a birdie putt of some 15ft but missed it and the hole was halved in pars.
The Scot drove into a fairway bunker at the second extra hole and took two shots to get out of the sand but finishing up holing a 25ft putt for a bogey 5. But Craig Isabel two-putted for a winning 4.
"The playing conditions were very difficult with high winds and Grant was one of only two players to post a score under par," said Brevard College head golf coach David Nelson. "I was very proud of Grant. He seems ready to play at a very high level this year. He currently boasts a 72.6 stroke average in tournament play. That is far and away the best I've ever had here and equal to the best average in the Conference last year. I anticipate he will make the NCAA play-offs (regional and National) as an individual if he keeps this up."
Carnie's Scottish team-mates, Tom Rennie from Deeside Golf Club and Craig Galloway, East Calder, West Lothian finished 63rd and 72nd respectively with totals o 235 and 237.
Webber student Andrew Hay from Westhill came joint 36th on 227.
