American Joe beats Scott Mann in
final of Craw's Nest Tassie
PRESS RELEASE
Joe Restein celebrated his 57th birthday in some style when he withstood a spirited challenge from local favourite, Scott Mann, to become the first American to win the Craw’s Nest Tassie over the Championship course at Carnoustie.
Restein, a plus-2 handicapper from the Bay Creek Club, Virginia, and a former semi-finalist in the US Amateur Championship, was four up after 12 holes but then lost four of the next five holes before sealing a one-hole victory with a spectacular rescue club second shot to within a couple of feet of the hole at the last.
The day before, Restein, a regular visitor to the Tassie, had defeated leading qualifier, Stefan Emmoth from Sweden, by 2 & 1 in the semi-finals while Mann, the champion in both 2004 and 2005, notched a one-hole victory over Swinton Park’s Lee Parr.
“Quite simply, this year’s Tassie was the best event I have ever played in,” said a delighted Restein after being presented with the trophy.
“I played some great golf, but it’s hard not to at a place like this.”
The Maulesbank Trophy, open to the leading 64 handicap qualifiers, was won by Nick Jones from West Lancs Golf Club. In the final, Jones, a 7 handicapper, raced into a four hole lead after nine holes against Sweden’s Agne Engstrom before going on to secure an impressive 6 & 5 victory over his Continental rival.
The Craw’s Nest Tassie was inaugurated back in 1927 and has since developed into one of the most popular events on the amateur calendar.
This year’s Championship, which attracted 350 entries from as far afield as America, Australia, Sweden and Holland, was fully subscribed within minutes of entries opening back in January.
“I’d like to thank all 350 competitors for their support at this year’s Tassie and look forward to seeing as many as possible of them again next year,” said Colin McLeod, Golf Services Manager for the Carnoustie Golf Links.
“This year’s event was an outstanding success and we’d like to offer our congratulations to Joe for the manner he won the trophy.
“We’d also like to thank him, and the other competitors, for their kind comments, both about the courses and the organisation of the event. They were very much appreciated.”
Details on how to enter the 2009 Craw’s Nest Tassie will be released at a later date.
