Nine-strong team for Kingsbarns Links August 29-30
GB&I boys' team named for
Jacques Leglise Trophy match
PRESS RELEASE ISSUED BY R&A
The Great Britain and Ireland team has been announced for this year's Jacques Leglise Trophy being played on 29-30 August. The nine-man team will take on the Continent of Europe at Kingsbarns Golf Links, near St Andrews.
The team will be captained by Scotland's Michael Stewart, who plays his golf at Troon Welbeck. Stewart, who is the only Scot in the side, impressed in last year's match at Notts Golf Club, winning two of his four matches and halving a third in his team's narrow three-point victory.
England have five representatives including Tommy Fleetwood of Formby Hall, who came so close to becoming the youngest ever winner of The British Men's Amateur Championship at Turnberry earlier in the year, and Stiggy Hodgson, of Sunningdale, who has long been tipped as one of the stars of the future, and was unlucky to go out in the second round of The British Boys Championship last week, despite rolling in seven birdies against Jake Shepherd.
Also from England are Eddie Pepperell of Drayton Park, who got to the semi-finals of the Spanish Amateur earlier in the year, Gary King of Tyrrells Wood, and Tom Lewis of Welwyn Garden City, who was knocked out of last week's Boys Amateur Championship by beaten finalist Fraser McKenna.
Two of Ireland's winning team from this year’s Boys Home Internationals are in the side: Rathmore's Alan Dunbar, who looked impressive in captaining the winning side at Royal County Down, and Luke Lennox, the big-hitting 18-year-old from Moyola Park, who also performed well in the matches.
Also making an impact at The Boys Home Internationals was Ben Enoch, the Truro-based player who will be the team's sole Welsh representative. Enoch was in extremely impressive form in scoring 4 ½ points from 6 at Royal County Down, and made it to the final of the Welsh Amateur earlier this month.
“We have selected a very good team to take on what I’m sure will be a very strong Continent of Europe side,” said Peter McEvoy, Chairman of Boys Selectors.
“These boys have enjoyed a very good season and I am sure they will perform well.”
Kingsbarns has been one of the host courses for the annual Dunhill Links Championship since 2001, and will be one of the Local Final Qualifying courses for The Open when it returns to St Andrews in 2010. This will be the first time that it has hosted the Jacques Leglise Trophy.
Great Britain and Ireland Team is:
